Sodomites (1998)

An Interesting Little Short
13 February 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Pretty interesting and fun to watch. Some people are sitting around a large elegant room. A few are masturbating, women are writhing on furniture. Suddenly a very excited man wearing a wolf mask enters and is about to "sodomize" one of the women when he is held back and handed a condom. He dons this... but before he can penetrate the woman he is held back again and given some lube. Now he may begin. What follows is an orgy of both cinematic beauty and visual euphoria. Pretty jaded with an extremity that just screams greed. What I appreciate is that even though this short seems more like an advertisement or campaign for safe sex, it's very easy to see the directors trademark style i.e. rotating overhead camera, blazing editing coupled with explicit imagery as well as the use of sound. Very reminiscent of Irreversible however this has a tone of humor very evident.

Rabbits (2002)
We're Not Going Anywhere!
6 September 2004
A slow, stylish, eerie and extremely interesting story set "in a city deluged by constant rain where three rabbits live with a constant mystery". Mr Lynch has a great talent for establishing atmosphere and this series is soaked with his trademark (weird) mood. When I watched the first episode I was not sure whether to laugh or be baffled at what I was seeing. 3 Rabbits talk out of sequence, an unseen audience claps whenever one of them enters the room and laughs (not because something funny is said, but at the misery of the rabbits), a candle burns in the corner, a demon face chants something undecipherable (reminds me of the litanies of Satan, the camera seems to be disturbed in the beginning of the 7 out of 8 episodes by something I can only guess to be a spirit. We hear footsteps, the door sometimes opens and the phone even rings. All to the frustration of the rabbits. I noticed a lot of people have tried to figure out what Rabbits is about and my take on it is pretty simple. Firstly, this wasn't the first time I have seen something like this, though this is definitely very well made. I read a book a very long time ago whose title I cannot remember about 2 kids who were put in a scenario similar to this rabbit house and were observed everyday by their captures. The 2 children (I only remember one child called Mavis) were unaware they were being watched and as far as they knew, they had a normal life (went out, watched TV etc) except they didn't in real life. Everything was in their mind. This seems similar to this story. The rabbits could be 'prisoners' who are being observed or kept by someone (the man in the green suit). There is however how they react to the audience (whenever they enter the room and the audience claps, they wait until the applause is finished and continue to sit down) so they are aware they are being watched. According to their dialogue, it seems to me they were once human, "Jane- were you blond?" but it does seem like they remember or who they were. They refer to each other by human names, but they seem confused or disturbed by their situation, "I wish they'd go away", probably referring to the unseen audience. The last episode offers a good climax but not a conclusion. Or is it? Are the rabbits unable to figure out a way out of their misery...or is this their reality as it always has been? Like the book I read, the children never did escape their house, but they did figure out they were not living a 'normal' life. Lynch has never been one to offer a comfortable conclusion to his work- so I would not be surprised if this is the end for his rabbits.

Amazing Magic Realism Film
3 July 2004
A lot of people like to get into arguments and debates as to what the greatest film is...its hard to ever reach such a conclusion- if it is even possible- given that there are as many films as there are people, and it would be impossible to see them all. But then there are films that we watch and we know we have been changed forever. These are the films that we usually call our "top 10" or "top 100" and usually most of us will agree on specific titles, concluding that a particular film is truly a "GREAT" film.

Black Cat White Cat is what I can call the Greatest film I have ever watched. It is of course quite a strong title to give a film, knowing such classics as Citizen Kane, The Godfather Part 1 and 2, I Am Cuba, 2001 A Space Odyssey, Seven Samurai or even Birth of a Nation have all at one time or another been given such a title by not just an individual...but by a panel of judges and critics from around the world. But there is something that this film has...a beauty, something absolutely magical and romantic...a fantasy that you only find in children's books, and yet it exists in this loud and clattered noisy film. How Emir Kustarica has done this is beyond my understanding. I first discovered Kustarica's films while living in England when one night I turned to ITV on a Thursday night and began watching The Time Of The Gypsies. I remember my mom really complained because it was 2am when the film started and we were going to Kent early the next morning but I told her I would go to sleep soon. Needless to say, the film was almost 3 hours long.. but it did prove to be a favorite of mine for a very long time...until I watched 2001 A Space Odyssey. So I battled in my mind...why do I enjoy these films more than the films others enjoy such as the Godfather? Why is my taste so different? I guess, different people enjoy different things, but we can all conclude a good smell, and evil and wicked mind...a soft breeze. What we cannot seem to agree on, is when a good film touches our hearts. The events that place in Black Cat White Cat are ridiculous and sometimes unreal. There is a scene where a band are playing while suspended on a tree...there is a dwarf girl whose single wish is to meet a tall dark handsome man, there is an arranged marriage, a dead grandfather...but what does it all mean or lead to? There are situations that are unbelievable and dreamlike, yet they are told in a very honest and sincere way that you believe them...unlike the films of David Lynch where you see something and its so mesmorizing you wonder.. "is that even possible?". This film however dazzles you with the thought of "what you just saw is real..because you just saw it". Its difficult to explain, but what you see in this film is a haunting, true, ridiculous and romantic situation that is beyond logic and yet so true to human nature. So is this my favorite film? I don't know. This film feels like part of my body. How am I supposed to say what is my favorite body part? How am I to choose my limbs over my heart? What I got out of this film is something I cannot even understand. I feel in love with film all over again. Maybe that was Mr. Kustarica's goal...to show us a romantic episode and hope it helps us reflect our own cluttered life. Or maybe he simply wanted to show a lifestyle of gypsies in Yugoslavia. I really don't mind not understanding the reason for his making this film because I like my confusion. I don't really care to know or not know, because I have concluded, that this is the greatest motion picture of our time.

Sweet and Smart but loses something in the end
10 April 2002
This film was really interesting to watch. Its very realistic(mainly because its an indie film) and at the same time very fun(lots of intelligent and very interesting conversation). The film basically deals with two women living in New York(i think) who get tired of men. One of them is the very sexually adventurous Helen and Jessica, who is constantly trying to find the right man but is always stuck with losers(i love the guy that calculates the bill). Helen decides to post a lovers add in the paper with a good quote(Jessica believes the right person for her will have a good and original quote). After the two meet the movie really starts to kick in. One cannot help but think this is a Fucking Åmål rip off (simply because its the same story only that Fucking Åmål is much much better, especially the kiss in the car). I have to say i was very impressed when i found out that the two actresses were the ones that wrote the story. The content is very intelligent. The film has depth and a very unique richness and energy only found in indie films, but somehow....everything is lost in the end. Am not going to say what happens(for those of you that haven't watched it and should watch it) but the ending was so horrible it may almost make you mad. Ofcourse some were unaware of this, simply because the story was already original enough. Fucking Åmål it is not, but an interesting movie it is. Very intelligent. I hope to see more work from these two very capable women.

Show Me Love (1998)
Superb
27 February 2002
We all know that foreign movies have a lot of charm but just how often is it that you watch a movie that has so much truth yet so much magic? Fucking Åmål is a story about youth, friendship, love and ofcourse,'coming out'. The performances stand out of two main reasons. The weight of the story as well as how the actresses envelope the story. When i started out watching this movie, all i knew about it was that it was Swedish and that it was about love. when i was done i wanted to watch more Swedish movies, but to my dissapointment, not many are even this good. I recommend you watch this movie with two things in mind. Number one, Agnes is absolutely beautiful. More so than Elin who everyone seems to have the hots for. Number two, there is a hot scene that diserves credit as one of the sexiest scenes in film history. One to rival Sharon Stone crossing her legs in Basic Instinct and even Pierce and Rene getting it on in the Thomas Crown Affair. With that in mind, get ready to watch one of the GREATEST teen movies about love and...........um........hrm, i guess thats it. LOVE.

Tú o nadie (1985)
No One But You
26 November 2001
When Raquel, a young a beautiful girl from the Mexican Countryside comes to Mexico City and stumbles onto the Lombardo Family she is instantly taken in by the handsome Antonio who is suffering from a memory laps, and his step brother, Max. I don't remember much about this awesome soap opera by Maria Zaratini, only that it was spectacular. If you can ever find this series, watch it. Very very addictive. No better series will ever come out of Mexico.

If you like watching Girls swallow, then this is a must.
23 November 2001
Absolutely amazing production from Diabolic video. Its no wonder they are number one. The first scene involves Justinee Romee and...um....who cares? Justinee is very nasty and always gagging for more, calling herself a slut etc. The next girl in line is Kristina Black, also featured on the cover. Very very cute and very good to see she loves to swallow. But the scene is not as interesting as the others. Next in line is a girl who is starting to become one of my favorite, Diamond Foever. She has a very distinctive deep voice, very foreign too, from Montreal. She is absolutly amazing. The other girls worth noting are Fawna, from down the hatch fame, who is down for whatever, Mei Yu, who is very cute and Scotti Andrews who is another show stopper. This porn is definately one of the best out there. Tired of seeing wifey videos? Not ready for bukkake? You love anal scenes? You want real porn? Then stop wasting time and get the real thing.

Doggystyle (2001 Video)
Not so much a porn as an explicit music video
23 November 2001
This is not so much a porn, but a collection of music videos with porn scenes to make up for time. Its not the kind of porn you watch because you want to watch porn, rather, the kind that you watch and laugh, then tell a freind about it and so on. The first scene is notably a good one, with Obsession taking center stage, but instead of focusing on the performers, background music is provided by snoop, and you are found distracted, listening to the music as well as watching the stars do their stuff. Although i was very eager to get this video, am glad i did. Its the kind of thing you want to have, and throw in when friends come over with a comment like, "did you ever watch that snoop porn?" Definately interesting, but not for a porn connoisseur.

Amazing movie
23 November 2001
Surreal, amazing and absorbing, there are not enough words to explain how great this movie is. I watched it late night on ITV in London from 2am to 4am only to catch a train the next day to Kent, but i don't regreat one moment of it. Am not even going to bother telling you what the film is about, because it really is one of those stories thats best kept to oneslf. Its like a good memory you keep to yourself. I have not seen any of the other Emir Kusturica films, but i will highly recommend this movie for all those that love fantasy, film and a good story.

Ringu (1998)
A Great horror movie
17 September 2001
For a closed culture, Japan sure is a county that loves to shock. With extreme manga comics and shocking storylines, you can be sure they will make a horror movie to make you scream. And it has not taken them long. Or has it? Ringu is really a good movie. Maybe not as good as some other japanese movies, but its only fair to say the movie is scary, which is what it is meant to be. There are many movies that fail to reach their goals, and with todays standards and what people can tolerate, its a challenge for any filmmaker to produce material that will make the audience marvel in fright. The plot revolves around a mysterious video cassette, after it has been watched, the viewer receives a phone call claiming that they will be dead within a week - inevitably they always are! A young woman and her boyfriend are mysteriously killed after viewing the tape, so a journalist attempts to solve this mystery. I will not give up anymore details, simply tell you, this is a sure keeper, and one to stack with your other horror collectables.

Lost Highway (1997)
"I like to remember things my own way"
15 September 2001
I just finished watching Lost Highway and there is really little i can tell you apart from the fact that this is one of the most bizarre, if not most bizarre, movie that i have ever watched. However, the movie is not bad. It is surreal and slow, with a disturbing lack of dialogue to explain the weirds events that are going on. The story starts with a musician who finds a tape of him killing his wife on his doorstep. He is then accused of murder and sentenced to death, but while awaiting his execution, he turns into a teen and begins living another life, which in a twist of fate, is very similar to his past. If this sounds weird, what until you watch the movie. The soundtrack is perhaps your only comfort as to try and explain to yourself what the hell is going on. With superb lightning and a weird old man that has some nasty habit of knowing everything and explain nothing, this is a movie that should be seen to be believed. Although i could hardly wait for it to end, you will want to see the whole thing for yourself. Its that bizarre!

"He has his father's eyes"
15 September 2001
In my point of view, the greatest horror movie of all time. After having seen all the other classics, The Exorcist, The Shining, The Birds and even Psycho, this remains the best. Rosemary and her husband Guy have just moved into a new apartment in New York and befriend their new neighbours after the death of a young girl. After Guy's job as an actor starts to fail, he becomes more distant with his wife and closer with the new neighbours. Soon, Rosemary is pregrant and Guy starts to have better luck, landing parts in leading commercials. But to what do they owe this new fortune? And why is Rosemary losing weight rather than gaining it? With its shocking conclusion, Rosemary's Baby becomes the most satanic film i have ever seen. See if you can spot Anton Szavandor LaVay as the Devil. A true shocker and a must for anyone that loves film.
