Boring and Slow - Great Acting
3 May 2019
The title was just an effect to get people to watch it. It was not evil vile or wicked. I liked the Mark Harmon version much better. While the acting was great and John Malkovich was very funny. This was more of a lifetime movie than anything else. It was rather boring and very slow going. I wished the directors took more of an outside the box telling of this story rather than this boring version. Great acting all around.

The Crossing: A Shadow Out of Time (2018)
Season 1, Episode 2
Remake of Invasion & The 4400
10 April 2018
Can anyone say Invasion and The 4400? Looks like they took bits and pieces of many other shows to create this show. It is very predictable. Nice locations and Steve the lead character is quirky and funny even though he tries not to be funny as it is a drama. It tries to be a good show but too much like Invasion and 4400 same old stuff with new title

Downsizing (2017)
One of the worse movies ever
25 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Not real sure what drew Matt Damon to accept this role as the film did not have any real plot, we thought it should have been move of a comedy but had no real idea who characters were trying to be or become. It was also very predictable especially in relation to Audrey as we all knew she would flake and we all knew Paul would meet the Vietnam stowaway and fall in love with her. The story was not well executed and kept jumping around with no real story line. Save 2 hours of your life and avoid this film. Definitely not one of Matt Damon's good performances at certain points the actors looked bored.

Miss Sloane (2016)
Jessica came into her own
25 February 2018
Without revealing any spoiler. Great cast lots of twists and turns. The only thing our group did not understand was how and why the lead character Miss Sloane was put in jail and why when she was released there were no one to greet her.

The Post (2017)
More of a Made for TV movie
25 February 2018
The opening song has been used so many other times before so not sure why Spielberg used this particular song which takes the audience to remember all the other movies it was used in. Not real sure why this movie was nominated for a Oscar for best pic as there is nothing special about it compared to the other nominations. Merly Streep while good really did not have very many lines and did not play any particular character we have not seen before. While it was cast nicely felt more like a made for tv movie than anything else. Do not think this was Speilberg's best.

Mr. Church (2016)
Friendship Film not a church film
20 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This is not a film about church, worship or religion. This is a very touching film about a friendship between a young white child and a black cook. The fact the color differences are not talked about in the film I applaud the writer and the director. This was a great film and I was pleasantly surprised. The title I think should have been different as it some people may think the film is about an actual church or religion. Even though it is not a religious film per say it does border on a amazing film with great Christian values like Love, Friendship, Humility, Sharing, Caring, Patience, Grief, death. It was very nice to see Eddie Murphy in a dramatic role and he did a great job. I wish it was advertised better as Eddie Murphy could have or should have been nominated for an award for his portrayal of Mr. Henry Church. Kudos to the writers, director and cast for an amazing feel good movie.

Masturbation in opening scene
20 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
People who feel they are the odd balls in society should believe they have a voice and live like they matter. Watching all films which received Oscar nominations. Our groups was not happy this film started with a masturbation scene nor there were other masturbation scenes in the film. The sexual scenes whether from the boss having sex with his wife or Sally Hawkins masturbating does not add and is not even needed in the film, the only reason for it was probably a shock effect and it takes away from the film's value. This film is a love story about the creature from the black lagoon. Everything in the film was green from the uniforms of the lead actors to the building to the cars to the walls to the pie, jello etc. Green was the color of the film. Kudos to the production designers they did anamazing job. We knew the scars on Sally Hawkins neck would be useful for something in the end and indeed they were. I thought the creature was introduced too fast and awkward. The opening scene with the water and the quote by Richard Jenkins was great, but we really did not need to see the diner scene as it was obvious his character was homosexual so not real sure why they put the scene in. The second diner scene was just as weird and not relevelant to the film as the first because the audience already was aware of how white men in positions of authority treat people who are different than them. All you have to do is look at America today. I was impressed by Sally Hawkins and Octavia Spencer was just as funny and entertaining as always glad she was cast. I thought the director missed a unique opportunity when they were looking for the creature in regards to Sally Hawkins lunch bag full of eggs. I really liked the score. And thought some of the scenes were very far fetched and would have liked it to be more real, but that's just me. Overall I gave it 6 stars because of the sex scenes which did not add to the movie at all. And there was no real reason for the curse words either also took away from a brilliant movie. The ending for us and several other scenes was no surprise and wished it had been. Overall great film style, production design, score and great acting by all the characters including the creature. Take out the cursing, the sex scenes and we could rate it a 9. Great Love Story Remembering LOVE sees no color.

Asperger's or High Functioning Autism
20 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
We have watched all Mr. Washington's movies and have followed his career. Glad to see he is up for another Oscar with this film. There were some technical difficulties when we watched the film we could not hear the characters at all times even though our volume was set to 90. Also we felt Denzel's character was someone who either had Asperger's or High Functioning Autism. We felt there was something truly off by his character. He played it great & it is so true when you high morals and desire to do the right thing you feel disconnected with everyone else. As usually no one understands you as the majority of the world would rather please everyone else rather than taking a stand for justice like Mr. Washington's character did. I would have liked to know what happened to the other under 5 characters they introduced and we were never told what happened to their case. For instance Langston Bailey who we are introduced to in the first twenty minutes of the filmed. The young man played by 'This Is Us' Niles Finch I would have liked to know what happened with his case esp since we get our first inkling into who Roman Israel is by his handling and speaking with this young man. I was happy they explained what the term esquire meant. We really did not understand Colin Farrell's character as soon as Denzel's character bought a new suit it seemed Colin and Denzel now were best buddies when in the scenes before Colin acted as if he really did not like Denzel's character. Not sure if the 12 minutes which the director cut from the movie after the screening in Toronto would have made the story flow better. I for one would like to see the 12 minutes as the movie seemed to jump around lots especially toward the end. I did enjoy the bulldog but did not really understand where Maya was coming from on their first date it seemed as if she went from a very positive strong female role model to a very weak submissive women, We just didn't understand her character which kept changing from strong role model to weak women. Denzel's character definitely rates an Oscar nod as he is definitely playing a character he is not and most likely has Autism esp. since he is a Savant in the film. We also thought Denzel's character had spent more than $5k on all his new suits and new shoes so this really did not make sense either. Good movie to watch good character studies. Interesting to note, Denzel walked around through the whole film carrying a briefcase from the 1970's as if he was scared to leave his notes at home. He updated his wardrobe, his shoes, his haircut but kept the same big bulky briefcase interesting character development. Would like to hear or read the director's notes about this film. Looking forward to watching the other Oscar nominated films.

Shots Fired (2017)
Too much Sex
26 April 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I think this should be a half hour show not an one long show. They need to stick with the facts of the show. I do not care who is sleeping with whom and for them to put that much sex into the first episode kind of waters down the story line. I also found it very offensive the two lead characters who are black would sleep with whomever without the first degree of a relationship. The story is about the crime not the escapades of the two lead characters. If they focused on the crime and left out all the other b.s. it would be a much better story. Tristin Wilds does a great job playing his character even though I am not real sure why he would be the only black cop in what is suppose to be a racist police department. Helen Hunt, I am not sure as really do not know whether she is a good character or bad character as some of the writing is a bit confusing, but we know Richard Dreyfuss plays a bad character in cahoots with Helen Hunt. The opening sequence with the police line tape in the form of the flag is unique. I also find the filming location interesting - North Carolina. All in all okay show, but wish they got rid of all the sex and extra martial affairs who cares, stick to the story at hand.

The Son (2017–2019)
Pierce Brosnan Portraying an 80 year old
23 April 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I really enjoyed the opening credits of this new series by AMC which airs on the Sundance Channel Saturday nights. The opening credit sequence is original and very compelling. But the opening score reminds me of Mad Men's opening score. The Son is definitely not a family series and has lots of blood, cuts and killings. In the first episode when 79 year old Eli cuts off the ear of a terrorist, it reminded me of Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs. In the second episode 79 year old Eli scalping someone who dis-respected him did not come as a surprise. I did not like the casting of Wendy Crewson as 79 year old Eli's mistress only because she routinely is cast as someone who has lost her hair to cancer in the Saving Hope series so seeing her with a full head of flowing hair on Saturday night and with no hair on Tuesday night, it did not fair well with me nor did I understand who exactly she was? Was she the Indian Young Eli had an affair with so many years ago? The dialogue in the 1900's was nothing like we speak today, there definitely was a writer error when the used slang curse words in this day and age which were never available in the early 1900's. I understand they are following the book by the same name, but not real sure why no one has questioned the fact of the age of the characters. Young Eli was taken by the Indians in 1849 when he was 13years old so he was born in 1836. 1836 to 1915 is 79 years. Pierce Brosnan who plays older Eli is only 63 years old in real life. The character he is playing is suppose to be 79 years old. He looks 69 at best does not look anywhere close to 79. Maybe the make up department can help with this inaccuracy. All in all pretty OK show.

I wish the directing was a little more on point and did not give away the story so much. A little more research needs to happen with the writers so they know what they are actually talking about in relation to the historical happenings. I enjoy the portrayal of young Eli but going from being captured in the first episode to being able to speak the Native American language in full by the second episode is a stretch and not something audience members will believe.

If you like Texas history and enjoyed the Alamo you will like this show. Pierce Brosnan's portrayal of Eli is really good, but he is not a likable character. If you want to see Pierce in a whole new light like you have never seen him before then tune in. If you do not like lots of violence & on screen sex you should avoid it. But watch the opening credit first, they rock. Enjoy!!!

Firehouse Dog (2007)
Booms Gone Wild
3 August 2007
The director and the producers of this film must think the audience is stupid. I took my acting class which is made of mostly children to watch Josh in action and talk about character development. Well the only thing they were able to talk about is the boom coming into view more than two dozen times plus seeing the top of the camera several times. I can not believe any distributor actually paid money to have this film produced, it is poor quality and everyone involved in it from the director to the DP & the editor should be embarrassed and ashamed to have worked on this project. I think everyone involved in this project owes the audience and the actors a huge apology. This movie's production value is worse than watching student films , at least student filmmakers know never to have the boom ever show in a shot or a movie let alone a movie that has more than 2 dozen boom shots. Save your money because the boom/mic coming into the scene every five minutes will drive you crazy, what a waste of good talent from Bruce Greenwood and some other veteran actors.
