Mulligan (2023)
How did this make it past... anyone?
Wow... I love cartoons. Saw a cast with some comedy all-stars, but somehow they decided that the lead character should have a voice that would be annoying in anything more than a 10 second appearance on any other show.
Unwatchable. The writing seemed pretty awful too, but I honestly couldn't watch it for more than five minutes so I can't give an honest review.
What an absolute waste of Phil LaMarr, Tina Fey and Dana Carvey.
And what is with everyone just stealing Rick and Morty's animation style?
Lazy and unimaginative right down to the animation.
Whoever heard the main characters voice and said "yes, this is something people will enjoy" should find another industry because they cannot be trusted with creative decisions.
A Bad Moms Christmas (2017)
You could do worse for a Christmas Movie
Ended up watching this during a Christmas movie binge and had to leave a review after seeing the one guy who was upset by the name Isis. It's a real name, was before the terrorist organization, in fact Bob Dylan wrote a song about a girl named Isis in the 70s.
Anyways, the reason anyone puts this movie on is for the cast. Mila Kunis is one of the most beautiful people on the planet. And then you've got Kristen Bell, Kathryn Hanh and Susan Sarandon. And a surprise appearance from Sandy Cohen from the OC of course.
The plot is fine, the Mom's moms are in town for Christmas and each relationship has its own brand of dysfunction.
The highlights for me were the romantic waxing scene, which I thought did a great job of poking fun at the usual romantic meeting scenes in movies, and Kristen Bell's mother just rattling off fake illnesses "I've got a lazy eye, I've got polio, etc."
The worst part of the movie was Wanda Sykes as the therapist. Nothing against Sykes, she's hilarious, but her character normalizes the mother's disturbing behaviour and tells Kristen Bell's character that she is to blame. Such a weird script choice, it makes no sense, watching your daughter have sex with her husband is obviously inappropriate behaviour, and it's not even good for a laugh. It's just like... why did she say that? Maybe it's a joke meant exclusively for older mothers who would smirk and nod their heads in agreement?
To sum it up, the movie has some good laughs, the plot is fine, and as far as Christmas movies go, you could do a lot worse.
The Kids in the Hall (2022)
Picking up where they left off
As a huge fan of the kids in the hall (my friend and I found his older sisters "best of VHS" back in our youth and instantly fell in love), I came into this new season with the fear that it might fall short or somehow tarnish their legacy.
Happily my fears were instantly subsided. The opening sketch with the Brain Candy curse was an excellent opener and the bank robber sketch was classic kids in the hall.
To the people complaining cause you had to see a dick on TV, get over yourselves. Unless you're bursting into tears whenever you see a pair of tits on the screen you're a hypocrite and probably have a case of the gay panic. One reviewer even said "the old show didn't resort to that" yet in the pilot episode of the original series there is a sketch called "Naked for Jesus." And if the kids could have been fully nude on 90's television they would have.
It seems like most of the "fans of the original series" leaving poor reviews, haven't actually seen more than a few electives or haven't watched it since it's original run because this show feels like a complete continuation of the original.
If the ravages of time weren't so apparent and the production value so vastly superior, it would feel like this was a seamless continuation of the original series.
The chemistry between the group is immediately apparent. Individually each member has had their moments but when the five of them get together they are elevated to another comedic plane.
The kids humour has always been absurdist and often self-deprecating, which means they are able to ride the line between edgy and offensive without seeming out of touch. Even their original show holds up surprisingly well to the scrutiny of modern eyes.
Some favourite sketches aside from the two already mentioned are the Blueberry Tart sketch, the nuclear bunker radio show and the zoom meeting sketch.
I felt compelled to leave this review after seeing the soulless, humourless, hunks of meat leaving 2 star reviews. The fact that one of them gave the show 2 stars and stated that "Hotel La Rut" was the only funny sketch should bar them from any future comedic reviews as they clearly have a comedic medical condition.
Spy Hard (1996)
Classic Leslie Nielsen
If you like Leslie Nielsen, you'll like this movie. Simple as that. It may as well be a Naked Gun sequel. It's exactly the kind of humour you'd expect. Lowbrow, absurdist, and often physical comedy. It's like a live-action cartoon.
If you're watching a comedy movie because you want to laugh then this movie will do the trick.
For fans of: MacGruber, The Naked Gun, Scary Movie, Austin Powers.
