I really wanted to like this movie, but...
23 December 2022
This movie has some great actors in it - Idris Elba, Peter Capaldi, and even Stallone providing his voice. But that's just not enough. The cheesy factor is just too high. You've got an anthropomorphic shark and an anthropomorphic weasel and a giant starfish from outer space. Then you have a guy who can remove his own arms and send them on ahead, floating through the air. Sorry, but there's only just so much suspension of disbelief I can muster.

John Cena should have stuck to wrestling, because he can't act. Fortunately, most of the bad actors in this movie died very early on, but unfortunately, Cena was a central character throughout the whole thing. And there was so much interaction between Cena and Idris Elba that it made Idris seem like a bad actor as well, because he had to come down to Cena's level. Daniela Melchior was one of the best actors in the movie, and she was only 24 years old, and had only been in 5 TV series and 2 movies before doing this one. And this was her first English-speaking role. Margot Robbie was still great as Harley Quinn, but the special effects they added in her fight scenes were ridiculous. And of course, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller still makes me want to hit her over the head with a golf club, but I can't fault Davis for that, since that's the effect her character is supposed to have on you.

All in all, this is one of those rare movies that I wish I could UN-watch.

Every bit as enjoyable as the first three!
27 August 2011
Anyone who hates this movie as much as some of the previous reviewers do, has obviously forgotten what it's like to be a kid.

The latest addition to the Spy Kids collection has at its core the values that all the previous movies had as well - it's all about kids becoming more mature, and about pulling together as a family. Sure, I could do without quite as many fart gags, but I never liked those when I was a kid, either. Featuring Jessica Alba as Marissa Cortez Wilson, and Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara returning once again as a grown up Carmen and Juni Cortez - the original Spy Kids - this movie has some great action sequences and special effects, and it all adds up to a great experience for kids of all ages - even kids who are all grown up.

I loved all three previous Spy Kids films, and even primed myself by watching them again this past week. I took my 15 year old daughter to see this one for her birthday today, and she absolutely loved it, as did I. She hasn't seen all three of the other ones, so she didn't recognise any of the cool gadgets at the OSS' Spy Kids Division, but that didn't keep her from having a really good time. I hadn't watched a movie in 3D in probably 30 years - back when you had to wear those goofy green and red cardboard glasses, and if you didn't wear the glasses you couldn't make any sense of the picture - so watching this in the relatively new RealD 3D format was a real treat.

Score: One point off for the modernized version of the failed "SmelloVision." My daughter and I both decided to abandon the "Aroma Scope" cards after the first three scents really didn't smell like much of anything. But a bonus point at the same time because unlike SmelloVision, which blasted the smells right in your face, now you have the option of not using the scratch-and-sniff cards if you don't want to. So one point down, and one point up. But one point off for having just too many jokes and gags based on bodily functions. The movie would have been just fine without them. I give it an 9 out of 10.

It's just a cartoon
3 June 2009
This is particularly for those who would criticize this cartoon because it doesn't quite meet your expectations.

Get over it. It is, after all, a cartoon.

If you want an Academy Award winning performance, by all means, watch an Academy Award winning film. This is a cartoon. I mention that again just in case it has escaped your observation up until now.

And this cartoon combines the two best elements from cartoons gone by - specifically the Road Runner and Speedy chases. Not only does it combine the two best pairs of good guy vs. bad guy, but also some of the best gags from past shows.

If you still don't think it's up to par, go back and watch an hour of the shows from the early 1930s, and then watch this one again. And remember, it's only a cartoon.

Face it, unless you're over 60, you've been watching re-runs of these guys your whole life, so if you're gonna complain about re-runs, then don't watch them. There's plenty of brand new much-lower-quality cartoons out there for you to complain about.

TC 2000 (1993)
good fighting, and one hot chick
14 October 2003
I watched this movie when it first came out ten years ago. I have been trying to find it ever since and no one seems to be able to find it. I loved the fighting -- Bolo, Billy, and Bobbie are great as the good guys, and the bad guys are equally impressive with Jalal and Matthias leading the way.

It has all the important ingredients of an action film: non-stop action on film. But most important, it has sex appeal with gorgeous Bobbie Phillips providing a good part of the action.

There aren't very many movies that stick with me for ten years, and this is one of them. I give it a 10!

Disappointing sequel - don't bother
22 July 2003
I was disappointed. The first movie had some purpose - a reason for the excessive nudity. Nothing against excessive nudity, but this movie's storyline was so incredibly unbelievable (yes, I know that's redundant - that was the point). Also, the camera work in the first movie was much better. All things considered, I would not bother watching this one again. Had I known then what I know now, I would not have bothered watching it the first time.
