What a shame
30 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The first season of this show was amazing -- in my opinion, on par with the best sitcoms of all time... Then it went political. I watch television to escape from the realities of the world around me. When this show ceased to be an escape from reality and became a platform for the writers to preach their politics to me for 30 minutes -- I had to drop it. Maybe it improved, I don't know, I stopped watching after the "this drug dealer responsible for many deaths and the immeasurable harm to countless others also helped this one kid, so he was a hero and must be treated as such" episode. It didn't get a third season, so I am assuming I was not the only one who stopped watching.

This movie's title is "Crazy Rich" Asians - not "Crazy" Rich Asians
20 November 2018
The movie was fine, but I am not a fan of the genre. The move was not at all what I expected. I am told I should have known by the movie poster. There is only one "crazy" rich Asian, and he wasn't in it enough.

There was no way this could have been good
19 November 2018
If you are able to turn off your brain you may find this movie ok. It was mildly entertaining -- which many movies cannot say. The science was terrible, but I suppose they didn't know or care about the science. The story was meh. The acting was sub-meh. Apparently they changed a lot of stuff to make it more appropriate for teenagers. A lot of people are upset by this and feel it made the movie worse. Adding gore would not have helped this movie be a better movie, it would have just made it more gory...

Worst. Episode. Ever.
5 November 2018
Seriously, this is the worst episode of Daredevil. I like Daredevil, but I don't like this episode. I suppose it was an OK television show, but I sat down to watch Daredevil and this wasn't it. It was about Karen, or more accurately, her past. She's been in the show for 35 episodes, and NOW they try to give me an origin story. If I was interested in her story (I wasn't) it would have been better to be in season 1 -- not the end of season 3. This was clearly and OBVIOUSLY filler to stretch it out to 13 episodes.

re-defines slow burn
5 November 2018
This movie was terrible. I cannot imagine who the people are who are giving this a good review. The movie's tagline is: "When Ellen, the matriarch of the Graham family, passes away, her daughter's family begins to unravel cryptic and increasingly terrifying secrets about their ancestry." -- and I wanted to see that movie. The tagline is a lie. The secrets don't start to unravel until you are 90 minutes into the movie, by then you have probably fallen asleep and if not, the secrets are "meh".

This movie would be OK as a drama about a family descending into madness induced by a series of tragedies. Shoehorning horror into this movie was awkward, and unnecessary. In the very, VERY slow opening 90 minutes there were 2 or 3 remarks that meant little at the time but made sense after the movie concluded -- but it wasn't much, and not really compelling.

The first 90 minutes succeeded in making you feel uncomfortable -- with the awkward family and their misfortune, and there were a couple of senseless gore scenes which added nothing to the movie other than allowing them to call it horror. If you want to feel uncomfortable, this will do it. If you want gore, this doesn't have much, if you want jump scares, again, look elsewhere. If you want creepy -- this movie has a bit of that -- but again, it falls more into discomfort rather than truly creepy. They call the end a twist. It wasn't. It was a surprise, I suppose, but not a consequential one.

Just don't watch it. Even streaming. It isn't worth your time.

What were you haters expecting?
31 July 2018
The reviews for this movie are ridiculous. The problem appears to be with people comparing it to the first Jurassic Park movie... In comparison, they say it is terrible for this reason and that reason. The problem here is that you people watched Jurassic Park as a child, before you became cynical, and it left an impression on you. Now you watch this movie, as a cynical adult, and say its not as good. The first Jurassic Park was fine -- nothing spectacular, and this fits right in. Your memories of the original are biased by emotion and nostalgia. If you want oscar winning performances or scripts, this is not the movie for you, nor are any of the Jurassic films. If you want a fun movie with a lot of dinosaurs, then you've found it.

It depends on what you are expecting
30 July 2018
This movie was fine. It was funny and served its purpose of distracting me from real life. People complain that its stupid or it has bad acting. I guess they went into this thinking it would be Schindler's List... David Spade is a terrible actor, he always has been -- what were you expecting??? The humor is stupid. All Happy Madison movies have stupid humor. This is absolutely on-par with every other Happy Madison movie... The people saying otherwise are tainted by nostalgia -- they watched Billy Madison in high school when they thought stupid humor was hilarious and now that they are adults they find the same stupid humor... stupid. The movie is fine, just don't expect a work of art.

This movie was ok, despite everything negative I'm going to say
16 July 2018
First of all, I'm sure you already know, the film doesn't have a lot of talking (out loud, anyway). I knew that going in. I still found it very annoying. They used sign language which was sub-titled... But still, the lack of speech or noises in general was annoying. Then there is the fact that the movie made no sense. I know, most movies don't, but this doesn't even make sense by the rules it creates itself. There is no shortage of reviews outlining the ridiculousness of virtually everything in the movie. Despite that... I thought the movie was fine... better than average. These days that seems to be high praise (at least from me). It is absolutely watchable as long as you are not the type of person who will lose it over either of the two drawbacks I mentioned.

This movie was NOT good.
16 July 2018
With the plethora of references to my childhood (and the age of the child playing the Atari 2600), it would seem the target audience is me. I loved the references to my past -- that is the reason I gave this movie four stars instead of the 2 or 3 it deserves -- it is also the only reason I did not turn it off after 30 minutes. The movie is just not good. The story is not good and the characters are not good. The presentation looks like a cut-scene from a video game -- and although they were IN a video game they still could have done better. Nothing that happens in the film is remotely believable. The "clever" twists were not clever. The characters had no depth, typical for video game characters, but less so when there are supposed to actual people behind those avatars. They give you no reason to care about these people... I fear that if the script had tried the actors still would have failed to pull it off. I cannot believe how bad this movie was in light of the fact that I AM THE TARGET AUDIENCE. Massive disappointment. Watch it only if you want to enjoy A LOT of references to nerd-culture of the 80s (and some 70s and 90s) woven into a boring "story".

Downsizing (2017)

What was this movie about?
23 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is not what I was expecting. It was an interesting concept, but the movie was not about "downsizing" -- actually what was this movie about? It was some regular people's everyday lives. Fairly boring everyday lives. There was no ending, but since there was no story, I suppose there was nothing to tie up. It just ended and we van assume all the characters continued doing the boring things they had been doing throughout the movie. I guess I am glad they spared me from watching more. The movie started mildly entertaining, but lost what little steam it had as it progressed. This movie could have existed almost exactly as-is without the downsizing being involved. I cannot give more than 4 stars for this movie.

Wow. What the heck was this???
22 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I went in with high expectations -- figuring it would be just a step below the Avengers. It failed to live up to my expectations. First of all, Ben Affleck is a terrible batman. The worst batman ever. I highly doubt there will ever be a worse batman. Wonder Woman was decent. These other people... who are they? They show up without getting enough of a story on them -- how can we care about them? Flash, Cyborg, Aquaman... they were cardboard cutouts. Steppenwolf? Really. There was no better bad guy than this clown, who wouldn't have been impressive even if they hadn't seemingly gone out of their way to make him boring. What happened to Darkseid? That was what I was watching for. Then again, they would have messed him up, so maybe I am glad he did not show up. This is a re-skinned Suicide Squad. Characters we don't know or care about, and a less-than-one-dimensional villain. This movie tried to rip-off the Avengers formula and failed miserably. Just rent it. Or do not watch it at all, that may be better. This is probably the end of the road for this DC endeavor -- time to reboot the whole thing.

Slow start, but picks up eventually
22 March 2018
The movie is painfully slow at the onset, but things pick up after a while. Once it picks up, the action should be enough to keep you from getting bored. The plot is predictable (even in the beginning) and the actors are bad. I saw someone else say the male lead was trying to do a Keanu Reeves impersonation -- I am glad I am not the only one who thought so. Make no mistake, this movie is not good... Fifth Element was better... but it is ok if you can make it through the opening 45-60 minutes.

What was this crap???
27 February 2018
Why do I watch Shyamalan's movies!! I can't say this is his worst movie (The Village) but geez! I will admit that I did not see the twist coming. Which is the first time that has happened in one of his movies since Unbreakable (most of his movies I cannot even discern what the twist was supposed to be).

So some kids go to their grandparents house. The older child is an obnoxious, pretentious film snob -- one can only hope this is Shyamalan admitting to the world that he takes himself and his work WAY too seriously. The pertinent information is set up SO AWKWARDLY it is ridiculous. Randomly, the younger child starts talking about a past football experience that later becomes relevant. There HAD to be a better way to fit that in the story. The germ-phobia was also forced into the story so it could later be a plot device. That could easily have been worked in more elegantly. Also, haven't we seen the germ-phobia thing before? and the sports rage?

I was not expecting much from this film, and it delivered. I watched it "to get it out of the way" because I feel obligated to watch his movies for some reason.

A fair movie.
22 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This movie was entertaining. I'd say it was a little better than average. The train derailing was entertaining to watch but was WAY over-dramatic. How did the dude not die? A train crashed into him, and he is basically fine. Not sure what I think about the monster... He did monstery things, like dig holes, kidnap people, and hang them in webs -- but he is also capable of flying an interstellar spacecraft. Strange combination. I see where Strange Things got its inspiration. Also, the micro-bots from Big Hero 6. While the movie was not perfect, it was enjoyable, unlike so many of the other movies I have seen lately.

7? Really, 7 stars? For what?
16 January 2018
So it may not be fair for me to rate and review this film since I only watched about 2/3 of it, but I have a fairly good idea what the rest would have been. I gave this movie 3 stars, which I honestly feel is generous.

If you like giant robots and/or giant monsters, then consider this movie. If you do not like them, then run from this movie. now. and fast. I gave this movie 3 stars and watched all the way to 2/3 point because of the giant robots and monsters, which were the only redeeming feature of the film. And there was nothing special about them, I just like seeing them on screen.

The acting was bad. The story was bad. This movie was bad. It is one of the few movies I've stopped watching. Watching poorly executed scenes with poorly written and meaningless dialogue for and hour to get to see 20 minutes of robots and/or monsters was not worth it.

How is there going to be a sequel to this? That is mind-boggling. I know what it will be: some giant robots fight some giant monsters. the monsters get increasingly stronger while the robots get increasingly weaker, but the robot pull it out in the end. In between all this will be rigid, unconvincing dialog being poorly executed by bad actors. Enjoy.

John Carter (2012)

bad premise, bad movie
16 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This movie was bad -- there are no other words for it. The sad thing is, with its premise, there was NO WAY this movie could have been good. The only move with a worse premise is "Yor - The Hunter from the Future". Look ythat one up on IMDB! In any case, the premises are nearly the same, in Yor a caveman defeats aliens who possess spaceships and lasers, and in John Carter, a civil war soldier defeats aliens who possess spaceships and lasers. A civil war soldier. defeats aliens wielding lasers for airborne craft. Are you still wanting to defend this? How was he able to accomplish this? Because he could jump well -- because the gravity on Mars is less than on Earth, he could jump really far -- much farther than would physically be possible, in fact. Also it appeared he intermittently had superhuman strength. Since punching is more horizontal than vertical, the gravity thing doesn't really influence it -- so I am not sure where this superhuman strength came from, or why one minute he could kill a big alien with one punch and the next he punched a normal sized person and they fell over (not dead) when you'd expect them to fly across the room (and be dead). Also, the end... I hope he knows the princess has moved on in the last ten years. Especially after (she thinks) he bailed on her. Just sayin'.

What am I missing?
4 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
There is a dude. He rides a stationary bike for cyber-money to buy basic necessities, along with countless other people. Television is always on and televisions cover every wall... You lose cyber-money for not watching. Apparently, the bicycles power the televisions the bicyclists watch. I got this from fans of the show, as it is not stated in any way in the show. Possibly, probably, also to power whatever the outside world is, which we barely get a glimpse of (and when we do, it is all trees, and nothing power-hungry).

So some girl likes the dude, and the dude likes some other girl. Chunky people sweep up the bike rooms. The bicyclists often treat them poorly, although the chunky people have the power to throw away the bicyclists knick-knacks. Someone said the chunky people are at the bottom of the totem pole, but that is never stated. How do they get credits? Is it easier than riding bicycles? They do not have to watch tv non-stop either. I assumed these guys were higher up...

There is a game show, if you win, you get to live outside the bicycle basement. No idea what this means, since no sign of this way of life are shown until the last minute, and what we do see is better than the bicycle basement, but FAR from awesome. The dude gives the girl he likes 15 million cyber-dollars to enter the game show. She does well. The judges then tell her if she wants out, she has to do porn. She agrees. I guess this matters because it gives motivation to the dude to do what he does next.

The dude sees the girl in porn, and gets mad. I fast forwarded this part, but I believe we get 10 minutes of him biking-sleeping-biking in order to earn 15 million more cyber-dollars. He gets it and enters the game show. He is able to avoid drinking the magic drink which means nothing since it was never said what exactly the drink did. Presumably it is bad. He does some dumb dance, then pulls out a shard of glass he had hidden. He put the glass to his neck and went on a tirade. The judges loved it, and gave him a show. He now lives outside the bicycle basement, which consists of, as far as any of us know, a big condominium with small rooms for non-basement dwellers, sitting in the middle of a giant forest.

What does this mean??????

He sacrificed his morals to live outside when he was mad at the girl from doing the same thing? Is this it? If so, that is garbage, or at least how they conveyed it was tedious and un-entertaining. He should have attacked the judges with the shard. We should have seen the outside world and it should have been clear that it was no better than below so everyone is fighting for nothing. Or the winners should have been food for the elite. Or another basement, because the outside world is a nuclear wasteland. Who were the chunky people? If they are lower, why do they get benefits the cyclists don't? Are they higher up? Are they the elite that eat the winners?

This show was garbage. It could have been mediocre, but it wasn't. It was awful.

Seven stars, but with caveats
21 December 2017
As a movie, this one was pretty good. Seven stars seems fair. If you go into it wanting to see a movie, you should be pleased and I think that is what Disney was going for. Unfortunately. As a Star Wars movie, this was atrocious. Possibly worse than the Phantom Menace. As a Star Wars fan, I'd give this movie three or four stars. Nothing goes the way the previous 7 movies indicate it should. At the end you are left wondering how they can possibly make an episode IX that anyone will be interested in. They gave Rian his own trilogy for the future. At first I thought this was terrible, however, in fairness, His own Rian-Wars trilogy may be fine since it will not be expected to fit into an existing story-line.

Godzilla (2014)

disappointing
4 December 2017
This movie was very disappointing. I am a fan of Godzilla and will tend to give anything with Godzilla in it more leeway than it deserves, and even still, I have to say this was not a good movie. I don't know what the bug-things were, but I was hoping for a classic character to be the antagonist. Godzilla was not in the movie much, which is sad because he is the main draw. His scenes were all dark and from odd angles, making it harder to enjoy what little screen time he received. I expect this was a artistic decision, but I disagree with it. In a movie like Cloverfield it works, but in a movie named Godzilla where everyone wants to see Godzilla, it does not work as well. This movie gets 4 stars because Godzilla was in it, and I like to see Godzilla.

One final point, which will likely render the rest of my review unreliable by... just about everyone. Bryan Cranston. There are people complaining that he did not get enough screen time, and they are correct, he is not the main focus. But my issue is... All I see is Malcolm's dad. I watched one season of Breaking Bad and stopped because it was so unrealistic for Malcolm's dad to be doing those things. Did no one else watch that show??? How is no one else having this problem???

Utter Garbage
4 December 2017
For some reason I felt guilty giving this movie the "2" it deserves, so three it is. The movie was bad, on all facets. I went into the movie knowing what type of movie it was going to be, so I was not surprised or disappointed by the weak story. It is expected in this genre. The acting was not good. The CGI was bad... My 11 o'clock news' weatherman does more convincing green-screen work. The acting was meh. The Egyptians all looked British and/or American (this was more distracting than it sounds). The tall gods were distracting and Lord of the Rings did a better job with creating the illusion of one 5'9 man being a drastically different size than another 5'9 man, and they did it FIFTEEN years earlier. This was a bad movie, plain and simple.

Why the low ratings?
27 November 2017
I'm shocked this is rated so poorly. The movie was enjoyable and fun, and great for kids. Was this a dramatic masterpiece sure to win awards? No. Of course not. it was not intended to be that sort of movie. It is the story of a broken emoji's quest to become un-broken. He must journey through different apps on the phone in order to reach the cloud. On this journey we get to see an imaginative view of what different apps could look like if the were "real". It is pretty clever, really. The Emoji Movie is full of humor (the joke about the elderly is HILARIOUS) and it has Steven Wright voicing the main character's father. I think this movie is definitely worth watching if you have kids... They'll love it and I would think the parents would enjoy it too.

You might like it
27 November 2017
I did not care for this movie, but that could be because it just wasn't my type of story. It is the tale of Victor Frankenstein and Igor creating the monster, and it focuses primarily on the events leading up to the creation of the monster, with only the last few minutes dealing with the monster itself. If you like Daniel Radcliff you may like this movie. Personally, I saw him as Harry Potter through the whole film. The movie was heavy on story, but I personally felt the story was "meh"... That could be biased, however, since I like comedy and/or action mixed in with the story quite a lot, and this was lacking in both. In any case, this movie was not for me, but it could be good for someone who likes the time period, likes stories rooted in inter- personal relationships, or Daniel Radcliff.

This movie was not good
27 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I am aware that this movie was not supposed to be like the one with Brendan Fraser, and I knew going in that it was supposed to be part of the Universal Monsters re-boot. Still, the movie was not good. It was not terrible, but it was not good. The whole movie was just a way to introduce the world to the character Tom Cruise is playing, with the idea that there will be future movies... But unless they turn things around quickly, Universal Monsters (The Dark Universe) will fail before it gets off the ground.

Pretty good super hero movie
16 October 2017
This was a pretty good movie. It had humor, it had action, it had Robert Downey Jr. The CGI was a bit *off* in some of the swing-from- here-to-there scenes. Mostly I thought Michael Keaton did a great job. He played the part very well. Also, enough cannot be said about how they were able to take a character as lame as Vulture (seriously, is there a weaker repeat character in Spider-man's rogues gallery?) and make him ominous. The character had hat tips to the comic book character (flight suit collar looking sort of like the comic book Vulture's nonsense around his neck) without drawing too much from it -- which is a good thing, since comic book Vulture is lame. Shocker was in it... albeit in a secondary capacity. They also gave a nod to the comic book uniform for him, again without drawing too much from the on- page character.

Solid Entry
16 October 2017
The most recent installment of Transformers was pretty good. I thought it was better than the previous two films (I cannot recall the first two well enough to comment on them). I'd complain about the plot or the science -- but this is a movie about transforming robots, so I guess that ship has sailed. Its story was better than average, the action was good, the robots didn't transform in the weird way they did in the previous film. It was entertaining, isn't that enough? If you liked the other films, you will like this one.
