Coherence (2013)
Mindbender
A beautifully constructed and performed puzzle-box of a film. Low budget but that is not to its detriment as its a simple (!) story very well told. Naturalistic acting elevates the weirdness. Wonderful.
Trick (2019)
Pretty pointless
There's no real need for this film as it's been done over and over. A workmanlike horror/thriller. A makeweight halloween filler.
Saint Maud (2019)
A Blast From Start To Finish
What a refreshing change to see an adventurous UK horror film being treated with respect by the critics. This movie was great with such a lot of care given to every tiny detail. And high praise too for the way the film manages to get in and out in under 90 minutes. Not a wasted second. Such a pleasure.
The Banishing (2020)
Borderline Boring Borley
There is a lot to enjoy in this somewhat by-the-numbers haunted house movie. Sean Harris gives it everything to almost comic effect and Jessica Brown Findlay is very good. True, there's nothing new to see here and it drags a touch but it's certainly more engaging than many recent mid-budget ghost films.
The World We Knew (2020)
My favourite from Fright Fest 2020
One of two really impressive debut films I watched at FrightFest (the other was Caveat). This isn't so much a horror film as it is a weird gangster movie. The antithesis of the typical British gangster film this is stark, surreal and the script is sharp as a razor. Beautiful to look at and the sound, with a psychedelic rock score in places, is astounding. Like if Reservoir Dogs had been made by Nicolas Roeg.
Caveat (2020)
Innovative and stylish
One of two really impressive debut films I watched at FrightFest (the other was The World We Knew). This is a stylish horror with incredible sound design and stunning visuals. The one very slight criticism I have is that it's perhaps over styled and sometimes weird for the sake if being weird. That said, I'd happily watch it again. There's enough going on to warrant a return viewing.
The Owners (2020)
Home Invaders
First up the performances are excellent in this not very horrific horror. It starts strongly but then seems to meander into nothing much. Great to see Rita Tushingham in anything to be honest but she's not really given much to do here.
Concrete Plans (2020)
Solid Thriller
Seen at FrightFest though not really a horror as such. Solid characters and tightly plotted. Maybe a touch unadventurous in terms of look/style but quality performances shine through.
