Land of Bad (2024)
Well done action movie
This is what I want to see when checking out an action movie. A simple but solid story, believable action, some fun. Russell Crowe brings in some comic relief. Especially nice, when looking back when he was younger and him self "special ops" like in "Proof of life or "Gladiator" and see him now a bit of as an overweight "anti hero" who is trampled upon by others, is a bit of surprise. There are some funny scenes and lines: like "is your wife in "labor camp" (Capt Eddie Grimms wife expects a child). Also Liam and Luke Hemsworth play a home game (the film is made in Australia). Also Crowe who hales from New Zealand has spent his childhood in Australia.
Beautiful Disaster (2023)
Nice surprise
Nice rom-com. Of course this genre comes with pretty ludicrous and simple stories, but that's we love them. The fight scenes are decent, there are also some poker games and they are, similar as in Bond movies, rather unrealistic. The story is still quite unusual, as the romance between the main characters Travis and Abby (played by Dylan Sprouse and Virginia Gardner) looks like being a disaster. But as in almost all rom-coms you know things are going to be fine eventually. For me as a mathematician it was nice to see some game theory featured in a college class. This is R rated, so definitely a ''Hallmark movie", despite the happy ending. When looking at the ratings before watching it, I did not expect much but I was pleasantly surprised and had a good time watching it while doing some other light chores on the side.
Reality Queen! (2020)
quite deep actually
Yes, it is a good comedy but there is so much more to it. if you are interested in the phenomenon why some celebrities get so much attention, one can gain some insight about PR about advertisement, about media. There is system in it and being able to exploit this needs skills. Ups and downs are important and interestingly, downs in the form of scandals are an important part of the drama. The movie is funny and it makes you think. How come that people like Kim Kardashian or Paris Hilton can rake in hundreds of millions of dollars, out of virtually nothing else than a name and looks? Is it talent? There is a scene in the movie, where the PR manager of London is asked whether London has talent. The answer is shockingly off at first given but in reality quite deep. The movie makes you think about value systems which sometimes are irrational and even go beyond the gossip, celebrity or reality TV world. It is a bit surprising why the movie gets so low ratings here. My own interpretation is that the folks who do not follow these things might not appreciate it and that viewers who do follow and adore such idols (Hilton has 16 Million twitter followers and Kim Kardashian has 77 Million which is almost population of all Germany), might not consider these things laughing matter.
Henry (2015)
Passion for music
This is a movie for an audience which can associate with having passion for something, especially for music.
The story might appears thin at first but it is not: Henry, a mute student enters a fancy boarding school, shows and displays enormous musical talent which triggers envy from a fellow student who bullies him, also physically. Henry stoically endures these ordeals and finds solice in music, especially the giant organ of the school and a dusty old organ in the basement. There is some disturbing violence, but despite the conclusion not completed within the movie the dramatic ending does not depress in the end (no more said here as the tension of the story at the end is really high and the ending not clear). The movie is in German, the music appearing is beautiful, the organ is played so that it goes under the skin, the characters are well played, especially the young actors are fantastic, absolutely no kitsch, no nonsense, and little psychological explanations for example and even a little surprise at the end when the story is really dramatic close to a thriller. The theme can be placed close to "Bildungsroman" (coming of age) kind, triggers associations to "the sorrows of young Werther" of Goethe or "the confusions of young Toerless" (a boarding school story of Musil), or "Beneath the Wheel" by Hesse, the story of Henry is much simpler, like an episode in a more complicated novel.
