Fright Night (1985)
10/10
One of the best Vampire movies ever
15 July 2013
Sure it's not THE vampire movie, but it' so original and has so much black humor that you gotta love it! Sure it's one of my favourite movies of all times.

Great gore effects, romantic vampires, humor: these are the things that make it great! Starting with the "vampire next door" thing, that is so hilarious but, looking at it from the leading character, so terrible, going thru all the jokes and two-way situations, ending with the suspense created by a great Vampire only Mr Sarandon could create. You want a different Vampire movie? Forget twilight and look for fright night! You will laugh, you'll find romantic and sexy situations, things that make a horror movie so real! Sure Jerry is one of the most realistic vampires ever played on screen! And the fact that a teenager has to fight it is one of the funny things making it so remarkable!

A good remake, but some magic is lost
15 July 2013
Good remake of the '85 classic, but something was lost. Maybe you need a great actor like Chris Sarandon to make it work or may be you need the funny "comedy" situation, but it doesn't deliver the great amusement as the original! Farrel is not bad as the movie's vampire, but he's not able to be as charming and darkly ambiguous as Sarandon. It's not an easy job, Chris created one of the most realistic vampire of all times, but Craig Gillespie could take him to be a little less "bad" and a little more "Gothic". I mean: it's not "30 days of night", this vampire is not a "wild animal", we are talking of a centenarian man that can even love, in its way, a Gothic creature that can be charming.

Same thing for "the great vampire slayer" Peter Vincent: here he is a boozer and quite a psychopath, not an actor out of business.

Anyway the movie works, it's a good horror movie, I just wonder why making a remake if you change the story and character so drastically! It makes no sense to me!

If it did not pretended to be a remake, with a slightly different story, it could have been considered an 8/10 movie!

oh no!

If you're looking for the new "Jaws" just stay away from this movie!

If you're looking for realistic special effects, good acting, a reasonable story, suspense and fear you'll have to look somewhere else! Bad acting, highly predictable "attacks" (you won't even be surprised by the false attack scene), only a couple special effects in the whole movie so bad you will look back to H.G Lewis movies with different eyes, a story heard so many times that we really didn't need a movie like that!

Another son of big mass distribution of horror movies, those stupid things that only childish people will be watching tighten to the chair!

Finally a great, original movie!
15 July 2013
It's been hard, but in the end someone released a good, REALLY good, horror movie! In the last 20 years it seems that horror movies have become so terrible main stream they can't scare a 5 year old child! The "twilight syndrome" is making things even worse, but finally "the light"! ..well a dark light for sure!

This movie is just great! Forget all the silly teen horror movies of the latest years, don't think it's going to be an "easy and predictable" plot and finally NOT A REMAKE!

The story is great, but you'll have to watch the movie to find out, let it suffice to know it's not a classic "demons" neither a slasher movie and don't expect "x-files" turns. This movie is about pure and simple evil, just like great writers as Poe and Lovecraft told us about!

Good acting, great story, astonishing fx: all those things makes The Cabin in the Woods one of the best movies of the decade!

Another boring, stupid son of paranormal activity
15 July 2013
I don't think you can say much about this movie, other that it really sucks! Bad acting in a "documentaristic style" that makes cry for taking back the old snuff/mondo movies! No suspense, no fear, no gore, just the classic "traped in the house with the killer" and some "mind trip" attempt sadly failed.

If you really want to watch this movie prepare yourself to be there, watching a girls running around am old house in the dark for almost all the movie lenght, just discover what you understand after ten minutes.

Even the old Jess Franco movies were more reasonable than this one! At least there were some nice nude scenes!

Old Argento's style
15 July 2013
Sure it's not the new "Inferno" or "The Bird with the Crystal Plumage", but we finally have glimpses of the old "Argento's style" back! A good, gory, horror movie, average scary scenes, nice FX and great story.

This is the third movie about the "three mothers", "inferno" and "suspiria" are the other two, and it close the circle of the three demons story.

As I said we are still a little far from the great directing we had in the first 70ish Dario's movies, but at least it's far better than the latest releases we have seen! The story goes on nicely, Asia is perfect in the leading role, Udo Kier find his "usual" bad ending in one of the best scenes of the movie (and of latest 20 years horror movies!), demons and gore scenes are really well made with the right amount of suspense.. what else do you need in a classic gore story! Sure, in this "twilight" era, when horror movie seems closer to its sunset, you'd like to see more movies like this!

Frankenhooker (1990)

Something about genius...
25 November 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Many "versions" of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein have been made since the first one with Boris Karloff in 1931, but only few can catch you and nail you to your chair. Well, this is one of those movies. Sure this is not a thrill and chill one, but you won't be able to stop laughing! You'll also have your jaw hanging if you like well made make up effects! In fact Gabe Bartalos shows some of his best works! Some incredible edit complete this jewel of a movie, and don't forget all the tits and asses around ;-)!! Henenlotter made a really great job, using such little details as the title "frankenhooker" second name "Shelley"! The story is nothing really new (anyway the movie was out in 1990...): a strange guy, a bio-electric technician as he say, loose her wife to be in an accident with one of his creations (a "wireless controlled" lawnmower) and he decide to get her back to life using his "bio-technic" ability.... ...But he has to find another body, as the "original one" has been torn apart! He decide to look for it between the hookers in the town, as no one will ever worry about them, but something goes wrong and the "mad doctor" find himself surrounded by body parts he swears he will put back together when he's done with his future wife! This guy is really out of luck: when the girl got back to life he discover she had the hookers memories and she got back to the gutter to "sell some love"! The story is really weird, the characters funny, the effects great and the end...well just the weird end you would expect...maybe! One more thing is to be said: Patty Mullen show how she's not just a beautiful Penthouse Pet, but a great actress too, giving credibility to such a weird character! What else can you ask to a low budget movie?

The funniest Halloween movie I've ever seen!
17 November 2008
There are so many "Halloween movies" that you can see, but I never find another so scary, funny, gory yet so classic! The plot is nothing new: a couple of girls and boys decide to party-all-night and, as it's Halloween, they decide to do it in a "hunted house". Obviously the house is really hunted ("possessed" as they will acknowledge...) and the demon will possess of the girls, "transmitting" possession to the others every time one of them dies. Nothing special, you may say, but what makes this movie great in my advice is the clear and very good directing of Kevin Tenney together with a great crew! Special effects are great all the times (you should have heard about Steve Johnson...) putting on screen very good demons and murders, and actors are very good, creating very realistic situations. There are also funny characters to put some laugh between the screams ("Stooge" has something of the porky's movies....)! For all those reasons, even if it's an old movie, I suggest to put it on the DVD player on a Halloween night, sure that it will create the right atmosphere!

Not bad, a typical 80's horror movie!
8 November 2006
It's not bad, even of some scene may seem idiot, it's got its scary moments! The plot is classic: a couple of friends got to the old ruined house of one of them to investigate on the death of his parents and understand his past, but something evil starts to happen and it's already too late!

There are good "black humor" moments too, just in the typical 80's way!

Good special effects, average (with its highs and lows) acting and directing, good atmosphere and a strongly appropriate location make this movie look good enough to be seen and perfect for Halloween nights! In the end I've seen bigger production look much more poor!

Belial third attack!
8 November 2006
Just from the ending of the second one starts the third chapter of the Basket Case saga. Still in the "freak house", Duane got crazy, at least for a little at the beginning of the movie... anyway did you ever think he was sane?? He is put in kind of "madhouse style" cell in the basement until the entire community is forced to move because of Eve, the Belial-like freak known in the previous movie, is pregnant and is going to need the help of a "specified" doctor! So they all move to the "doctor's house" we soon discover to be Granny Ruth husband (you will also see their son, but I think you'll be glad to discover that yourself!) and try to help eve to give life to the progeny the title talks about! A strange-but-happy family picture? Useless to say troubles are on their way and a couple of police officers "steal" the little creatures and shoot eve: it's time for Belial's revenge!! The battle scene provides a "techno-belial" too! Very funny!

This movie is full of silly-yet-entertaining character, but I consider better the previous one. Maybe the plots are too similar, nothing is added except some freak and some laughs, maybe it is just too hilarious, sure it's not as good as the others! Technically it's still above the average level of low budget movies, but it lacks of something I can't define. Anyway it's worth a look with some friends for some good laugh!

Second coming for Belial!
8 November 2006
If you have seen the first movie you'll probably be wondering how can another Basket Case movie be a continuation of the first! Well, it's easy enough, but I don't want to ruin your "surprise"!! Anyway it begins just from where the first end. Soon, just a matter of few minutes, you are introduced in a new character that will also link this one to its sequel: that's Granny Ruth, one of the most entertaining in the whole series! This little, mid-aged lady together with an girl help Duane and Belial to escape and shelter from the police, chasing them for the first movie's massacre! Soon you discover that they're not alone in Ruth's house: not only the girl helping Granny Ruth is there, but an entire freaks community! Seems like Duane and Belial found a family, but soon troubles arrive as a journalist discover the Bradley twins shelter! It's time for massacre again!

To be honest I found this one really entertaining, much more then the first one that was more like an"original" slasher movie! This time Gabe Bartalos give "tru life" to Belial, using an animatronic model instead of a still one animated in stop motion! It really looks great! Also the other freaks look really good, and there are really a lot! A social critic find place in this movie too: as Henenlotter did in all his movies, any "strange thing" you see here sounds like a metaphor of true life. So the freaks community been chased just for their "differences" from the mass seems to be a more intense and "intellectual" reading key for this movie, much more than you could have been thinking.

Crazy and really good special effects, technically much better than the average low budget movie, funny plot: it's got much more than you could expect from a movie of this kind!

I can't say if I prefer this one ore the next one, but sure this two are very different from the first Basket Case: here you will find true comedy painted in a gory way, but no suspense or thrills!

The best of Henenlotter movies!
9 October 2006
I can't hide that Frank Henelotter is one of my favorite directors, but this one is his very best!

That's kind of a story of "racims" and, his way, brotherly love!

Kevin Van Hentenryck offers a great performance as the "normal" brother, while Henenlotter proves himself a great director!

You may love it or hate it, but it's much above the average horror movie!

Low budget might have forced the choice to animate the "monster" in stop motion, as in the 2 sequels stop motion leave space to animatronic. Anyway the effects are perfect for the movie.

Only bad point to me is the quality of VHS: not at the top!

Some kind of "genius"!
9 October 2006
There's something hilarious, yet Pter Jackson genius is what will grab you!

You will not be scared by this movie, not at all! You will laugh and be disturbed by the special effects!

What matter if you see "dead" actors coming back in next sequence or if night become day from a frame to another?

The fact is: a movie made by a couple of friends with a 16mm camera and home made special fx (such as "cigarettes" burning the film to obtain the "flashing" of gun's shots!) couldn't be better than this!

That make you think about the money spent now to make much worse movies!

A gore classic
8 October 2006
A classic gore movie from Italian director Aristide Massaccesi (alias Joe D'amato). It's a typical 80's slasher movie, its point of advantage is a great atmosphere and really good special fx. So good that someone claimed, when the movie was on theaters, that the scene with the fetus was a snuff! The fact is that the actress in the scene is Serena Grandi and the scene is just a great joke!

The movie was banned in england for its violence.

Some really scary scene, with good pathos was realized in this horror flick, together with excellent special effects.

Even if it has its highs and lows it's one of the best gore movies of the 80's

So, if you can't stand lots of blood and gore don't look for this movie!
