Spaced Invaders (1990)
Just what is so bad about this movie?
I first saw this movie in 1990 when it first came out on video. I agree that it is total nonsense, but it is also one of the funniest movies that I have ever seen. The very idea that a group of "advanced aliens" would be running for thier lives from a bunch of country hicks is totally side-spliting. Why do all science fiction movies have to be about murderous beings? This group of Imperial Martian Atomic Navy misfits reminds me of some of the idiots that I knew in the army! No wonder they were left on asteroid patrol while the rest of the fleet went to war. Leave this movie alone. We need more like it.
Platoon (1986)
I was insulted
I am only 39 years old, so I didn't make it to Vietnam. But, I did join the army in 1980 and most of the officers and senior NCO's I served under did serve in that war. Bad things happen in war. That is the nature of war. This movie portrayed U.S. soldiers as dope heads, thugs and murderers. I couldn't care less about Mr. Stone's opinion of the military or of the Vietnam War. If you are going to tell a story, tell it right. The whole story was outrageous: SSG Barnes kills a native villager; the platoon burns the village. SSG Barnes kills SGT Elias because he thinks he is going to rat him out. Then Chris kills a wounded Barnes for no apparent reason. Please, give me a break! No one, I repeat, no one hates war more than the people that have to fight in them. The best thing that I can say about this movie is that it has an antidote, Hamburger Hill.
The Longest Day (1962)
One of the best
I never get tired of seeing this movie. Although it was made the year of my birth (1962)and 18 years after the actual event, it tells the story as it happened. The invasion of Normandy, as most people know, turned the tide of the war against the Germans, but some people today can't even tell you the date of the invasion. This movie was made by people who not only remember the events, some like Eddie Albert, were actually serving in the military during WWII. Because of this fact, this is one movie that does not need to be remade. The true meaning just can't be brought forward by the actors of today, no matter how talented.
Red Dawn (1984)
A good portrayal of what would have happened
I first saw this in 1985, after it was released on video. At that time, I was in the intelligence branch of the army reserve. This film gives a very realistic view of what would have probably happened if Soviet bloc forces invaded the USA. After spending the last three years as a police officer, I feel that the youth of this nation would not be up to the task. But, then again, in war, only about 15% of those who could fight, will fight.
Wild Wild West (1999)
Very surprised
Wild, Wild West was, without a doubt, my favorite when I was a child. So when I first heard about this movie, I wanted nothing to do with it. But, when I took the plunge and finally watched it, I was very surprised. Will Smith played the role of James West with the same gusto that Robert Conrad used in the 1960's. As for Kevin Klien, he wasn't trying to be funny. The role of Artimus Gordon wasn't for comic relief. It was a very complex role that I feel was perfect for Klien. True, the story line was hokey, but so was the TV series. To watch any movie that uses a story line from an old TV series you must remember that it ISN'T the series. Once you do that, you can enjoy the film. This film has it all over Hot Shots and other so-called comedies.
Memphis Belle (1990)
Very Wrong
I have actually touched the B-17F, "The Memphis Belle." I have been an aviation buff and World War II historian since I was 12 years old (1974) and looked forward to this movie. I was very disappointed after I saw it. The crew member's names were not correct. The "Memphis Belle" was the first Eighth Air Force bomber to meet it's 25 mission quota with the original crew, but, it was NOT damaged on it's final mission and the only Purple Heart awarded to the crew was to the tail gunner for what he described as a "scratch on the leg". No one was injured on the final mission. In fact, the pilot, Robert K. Morgan, went on to pilot the first B-29 over Japan later in World War II.
