Damien (2016)
5/10
Poor Execution and Typical "Remake" Laziness
10 June 2016
If you've seen the original Omen movies you've seen Damien. All this show does is rehash the same ideas and lines from the movie and then repeated over and over again, beaten to death in each and every episode.

The original movies were great for introducing this style of story telling. The use of the unknown and subtle implication was great at the time.

However in Damien the writers seem to depend on nothing more than creepiness, scary imagery, and nonsensical babble. When you watch an ongoing TV series you expect the characters to develop in some way, you expect a story to unfold to reveal a new world to you, but that just doesn't happen in Damien. The characters lack any actual motivation for why they do the things they do and you're just supposed to except that one person is crazy, another is obsessed, and another is devoted, and people just appear out of nowhere, with no rhyme or reason. Everything feels really forced and extremely stupid.

I can see why it was canceled. It wasn't going anywhere.

Unless you're into cheesy horror movies which just show creepy things repeatedly and you don't care for crappy dialog and next to zero plot then you're probably not going to enjoy Damien.

Defiance (2013–2015)
6/10
Not believable
29 May 2013
Warning: Spoilers
The problem with defiance is that it's trying too hard and trying to do too much...

The pilot episode throws you into a new world that is "earth" completely transformed by terraformers, entirely new breeds of alien plants and animals, entirely new landscapes, inhabited by 5 different humanoid alien species, after a major war between the humans and aliens lasting over 7 years, Now after all that turmoil we are to believe that in just 30 years all the aliens and humans living together speaking English, creating common governments, hanging out as if it is all "normal".

Sorry, I'm not buying it... We have had apartheid in Africa/US for over a hundred years, Israel/Palestinian conflict lasting 60 years, we have dozens of examples throughout history of just different tribes of the same race who can't assimilate. Yet somehow we're to believe Aliens & humans do it in just 30 years with a 7 year war and radically transformed biosphere in between? It feels like Defiance is trying hard to be "Star Trek: Deep Space 9" however DS9 was set hundreds of years into the Star Trek universe. Which makes the human/alien relations FAR more believable.

They are throwing everything but the kitchen sink in this show which makes the characters feel less developed and rushed. There are some interesting character moments but they are not expanded on enough for me to actually care.

Instead of being DS9 or yet another western scifi, this show should have taken a page from Gene Roddenberry's "Earth Final Conflict".

Nice Premise But Totally Fails The Realism Test
20 December 2012
I honestly have no idea why the people are raving about this show.

It is a nice premise, but the unrealistic situations, romantic engagements, and general stupidity and unprofessionalism of the characters involved just keep me scratching my head as to why it is so highly reviewed.

It's almost as if someone came up with a great concept, but spent little time writing a decent story to explain it. The character's seem little more than caricatures with little motivation or reasons presented as to why they do the things they do.

Then you have random outbursts of over the top emotions that's supposed to pass for "drama".

Much of the story is predictable if you simply say to yourself: "What would be the dumbest thing to happen in this situation?" Once you figure that out, then it's very easy to know what's going to happen next.

It would be great to see the same premise, but with a dedication to detail, intricate character development, and realism of shows like "The Wire".

Haywire (2011)
8/10
An Unexpectedly Brilliant Film
20 November 2012
I loved this movie... I wasn't expecting much because of all the mixed reviews, but I was pleasantly surprised.

One thing to note is that the movie was shot in a kind of 70's style. This may turn people off because you don't see the over the top "gloss" that is associated with your typical Hollywood action movie. So it may come across as low budget, with odd music choices. However about halfway through I figured out that this is actually a throwback to some of the old 70's action/suspense/crime/spy films. The movie style, dialog, etc. A young Michael Caine or Sean Connery would fit right in here.

If you don't pick that up or appreciate this "retro" style, you're not going to like it. If you do then you're in for a treat and beautiful cinematography.

The action and choreography was fantastic... Not for being crazy and over the top, but for being INCREDIBLY realistic . This isn't your typical "suspend your belief for a moment while a skinny Barbie chick throws a 300 pound man across the room with her finger". No this looked and felt *real*... It wasn't until after the movie that I learned that the main actress was a former mixed martial arts fighter. I never got the sense that she was fighting beyond that of a real highly trained woman. This made me sympathize with the character much more.

The plot is simple and straightforward, but reveals a complex relationship between the characters.

If you're looking your typical over the top Hollywood action flick starring Lucy Liu, Bruce Willis, and featuring big explosions and high tech spy gear then skip it... You're not going to like it. If you're looking for an atypical action movie that's subtle in it's delivery and a true throwback to some of the pure, gritty and straight forward movies from the 70's then you won't be disappointed.

I'd LOVE to see a sequel or even a television series, but I doubt that will ever happen because people really didn't know what to make of this movie... Some people were expecting an action movie and got a "film", others were expecting great drama with hi profile actors, but instead got an action movie.

In reality Haywire is part action movie and part "film". This makes it very unique and rather odd at the same time. Action movies typically break ground through more special effects, however Haywire does the opposite by going "retro".

So if you are of those two minds you will love this movie. Otherwise you will just see it as falling short in either category.

Primeval: New World (2012–2013)
3/10
Yes, It is quite painful.
14 November 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I watched 3 episodes to really give this spin-off a chance. However I'm sad to say I'm done... I simply can not watch this anymore.

I can usually stomach a sci-fi that at least "tries". Amanda Tapping's previous show "Sanctuary" seemed pretty low budget and incredibly cheesy at times, but it at least had a an involved story and interesting characters that kept me watching.

"Primeval: New World" is not even trying....

The *original* UK Primeval did something quite amazing... It took a relatively simple (and somewhat silly) concept of random "portals in time" that would let through the occasional creature and made it into something brilliant...

What made the UK Primeval worth watching were the interesting characters, complex character development and interaction, the interesting and thought provoking story arcs. All with a touch of mystery and action in just about every episode.

However the North American version "Primeval: New World" simply takes the one thing that was silly about Primeval and absolutely NOTHING ELSE... Normally a "spin off" either takes a popular character into a new show or expands on an existing story or concept. This show does absolutely none of that.

This is no continuation of "Primeval" it's simply a B-version of the original Primeval on a different continent. The writing displays no imagination, no intrigue, instead it just copies a concept and add some gratuitous drama.

I hate to be "that guy", but if you have any interest in this show at all do yourself a favor and watch the UK Primeval. It is surprisingly good.

However there is absolutely no reason what so ever to watch Primeval New World.

It is nothing more than monsters running around killing people, without any rhyme, reason, or story to speak of.

Your Typical Quirky Detective Show...
6 October 2012
This show isn't "Sherlock Holmes".... and I don't say that because of any "reimagining" or creative license taken with the character.

This is nothing more than your typical Hollywood detective show that features a quirky guy solving crimes with his straight laced sidekick. It's been done millions of times on US television. Monk, Psych, Mentalist, Lie to Me, Perception, Endgame, The Finder, Life, etc.. The list goes on and on.

This is a very mediocre show... The characters are weak, the stories are weak, and the crimes are mundane. Halfway through the second episode I found myself already solving the "mystery" and spent the rest of the episode wondering why this Sherlock character isn't able to see something so obvious.

Furthermore the character doesn't "deduce" anything important and at least half the deductions are more like dumb guesses, they add little to the character or the story.

The use of "Sherlock Holmes" here is nothing more than a hook to get people to watch the show. In the end the "Sherlock Holmes" character is mere window dressing to your basic quirky detective show. One that isn't even as good as the other quirky detective shows.

The show does absolutely nothing to capture the essence of Sherlock Holmes.

If you really want to watch a modern take on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's character then you really should watch BBC's Sherlock.

Elementary tries to be like BBC's Sherlock, but other than having a guy with a British accent, it fails miserably on all counts.
