Edward Scissorhands (1990)
Beautiful
Edward Scissorhands is a great example of Tim Burton's work. It is the story of Edward, a man created by an inventor who died before he was able to give Edward hands, leaving him with only scissors for hands. Edward is left alone in the inventor's mansion on top of a hill, until a kind Avon lady, Peg Boggs, takes him in.
One of the main reasons I love this movie is the beautiful music by Danny Elfman. The music itself gives life to the movie, gives it some personality. Another highlight is the acting, especially Johnny Depp as Edward, and Winona Ryder as Kim, Peg's daughter. Not only do they act by speaking, you can tell exactly what their characters are feeling just by the simplest expressions they make. You can really relate to the characters, and it's really an emotional movie.
This is the only movie that's ever made me cry. It can really mean something to someone.
10/10. I recommend watching the commentaries by Tim Burton. He doesn't say much, but you'll learn more than you thought you did :)
Full House (1987)
Makes you wish you were there.
Full House came to me when I was about 9. I remember seeing re-runs of America's Funniest Home Videos with Bob Saget, and one day my mom told me that he was also in a show called Full House. One day, I was lucky enough to catch an episode while visiting family. It didn't seem too interesting at first, but as I watched more and more, ever night at 9:00, I would just be so into it.
This show really makes you want to be there yourself, hang out with the girls, go places with them, and maybe even join in their little family "sing-alongs".
The thing I like most about Full House is that it's a great show for kids AND adults of all ages. There will be some parts that are more for adults, then parts that are meant for kids, so that the whole family will enjoy it. No matter how cheesy it can be, it's still a great show, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone.
10/10
Little Women (1994)
This was a lot better then I thought...
When I was about 8 or 9, I got this as a gift for Christmas. Well, I thought I wouldn't be into it, but as soon as I actually took some time to watch it, I found that I was very wrong, and pretty soon, I wanted to show it to all my friends and family.
It's just one of those movies that will stay in your heart forever. The acting was spectacular, and the story, which came from the original novel by Louisa May Alcott was enjoyable.
Probably one of the things I liked best in this film was watching all the girls grow up, getting married, and one, eventually having children. There are some happy moments, then there are some that are quite sad, but either way, this is a very good film that I would recommend for just about anyone who is looking for a great family movie, or just something to watch on your own.
The World of Stainboy (2000)
Pretty Weird...
I expected this to be a lot better. I love Tim Burton's work, so I was really excited to see these online short films. Well, they weren't at all what I had expected.
I don't really know what exactly it is I don't like. I guess they're just sort of dull. The sound bothers me, and most of the characters, although I loved Roy the Toxic Boy, and Stainboy.
The Match Girl episode probably bugged me the most, although it was pretty funny.
I also don't like the way some of the characters die. Like how Match Girl basically set the gas station on fire, or how the Girl Who Stares died, in general. Roy's death was amusing, surprisingly. Death by a car freshener. Very original ;-) That made me laugh so hard...
There are some things that aren't appropriate for kids. Just some language and gore. That's about all I have to say! 3/10
Vincent (1982)
Very Good
Being a big fan of Tim Burton, when I found out this was on the Nightmare Before Christmas DVD, I watched it right away. Yet again, it was just one of those movies, that you would have to see twice to really enjoy it. It was a bit boring at first, but as I began to watch it more often, it grew on me.
The animation was brilliant, and the movie itself has Tim Burton written all over it. The puppets look like they were hand-crafted by Tim himself. They look so close to his drawings, it's almost scary. The script was also written by Burton, and is brought to life even more with the voice of Vincent Price, who is the narrator of this film.
I think that this movie is funny, amusing, a tad bit creepy, yet very well-done... everything I look for in a movie.
Very original. Again I'll say it, "Well done, Tim!" 9/10
Corpse Bride (2005)
It takes my breath away...
Unlike most movies I've seen, the first time I went to go see this in theaters, I loved it. Probably the thing I loved most about it, though, was the breathtaking stop-motion animation. I hadn't seen many films in stop-motion before, so this was definitely a treat for me.
The sound in the theaters was not very clear, so I couldn't hear some of the things that the characters were saying/singing. It helped a lot better when I bought the DVD the day it came out. I really enjoy the songs by Danny Elfman, especially "Remains of the Day" preformed in the movie by Bonejangles and his "bone boys" in the colorful club down in the Land of the Dead, which is also the home of many enjoyable characters such as Bonejangles, Miss Plum and the rest of the kitchen staff, and who could forget, the Corpse Bride, beautifully voiced by Helena Bonham Carter. In my opinion, she was perfect for the part, and no one could do it better. Johnny Depp's performance as Victor Van Dort, was definitely my favorite. Victor is such an incredible adorable, innocent character that you'll learn to love.
Corpse Bride is the story of Victor, son of Nell and William Van Dort, fish merchants in a colorless Victorian town. Victor is pledged to be married to Victoria Everglot, who's parents are Maudiline and Finis. While at the wedding rehearsal, Victor just cannot get his vows right, and goes into the forrest to practice. It just so happens, that when he finally get's his vows right, he places the ring on a twig, which is actually the finger of Emily, the Corpse Bride, who was obviously murdered by her lover (Bonejangles tells this story in the song I mentioned, "Remains of the Day"), who eventually almost married Victoria, and was going to murder HER for her parent's money (which they didn't have any to begin with, he later finds out), until towards the end, when he drinks the "Wine of Ages", a type of "poison" that Victor was to drink when he was about to marry Emily (he finds out Victoria was pledged to be married to Barkis, while still traped in the Land of the Dead).
The story, characters, animation, and music are the things that make the movie so great.
Two thumbs up for Tim Burton! I give this movie a 10/10!
Cars (2006)
Surprisingly Enjoyable
This was one of the great movies of this year. I would go back to see it again and again and again, as many times as I can. I went to see it thinking, "This is gonna be another dumb kids movie that no one likes." But surprisingly enough, the theater was full of not just little kids, but adults, teens, and older kids as well. The movie just kept getting better and better, funnier and funnier until it ended. And even when it was over and credits began rolling, the little twist on Pixar movies with Cars as the characters came on, and made me and the theater laugh so hard.
I agree with my dad who went into the theater saying "Isn't this a movie for second graders?", and coming out saying that it was one of the best movies he's seen all year.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005)
What a Treat!
Wow. What a great movie... although I didn't think so at first.
By what a good friend had told me, this movie was the dumbest thing in the world. I was about to take her advice, and not go see it, but I decided to, anyway. Know what? I hated it. My little sister thought it was great... the absolute BEST movie she's ever seen in theaters! But I just rolled my eyes and denied everyone who tried to tell me it was good in any way, shape, or form.
As time went by, I began to search for pictures, clips, and info about this movie, and the cast who was involved in it. I still don't know why, considering I hated it, but I did. Any time I would see an article about it, I would immediately start to reading it, and not put the paper down until I was finished. I remember going home and telling my mom random facts that I'd never knows before, like "Did you know that Tim Burton and Johnny Depp work together a lot?". And that's another thing. I had no idea who the heck Tim Burton was... but then I did. It was weird... anyway, back on subject: When I started seeing the commercials for the DVD that was soon to be released, I would always remind myself that I would have to rent it to show to the rest of my family. Well, a few days after it came out, that's exactly what I did. My mom thought it was repulsive, and my brother thought it to be hilarious... until we watched it for a second time, and pretty soon, we were all in love with it. You really have to give it a second chance and watch it again until you can call it dumb or not.
The characters are great, especially Freddie Highmore as Charlie, Annasophia Robb as Violet, Julia Winter as Veruca, and who could forget, the fabulous Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka himself. The music is great... especially those crazy Oompa-Loompa songs (which are very danceable, by the way, and I would recommend the Oompa-Loompa dance feature on the DVD to anyone... very fun)and I also loved the song that plays during the opening credits.
I loved the twist that was added where Willy Wonka had "no family", and how it was always difficult to say the word "parents".
A few of the jokes also make the movie as great as it is. Some may seem a little bit quirky or stupid at times, but they're guaranteed to make you laugh.
I would definitely recommend this movie... to anyone. Especially Tim Burton fans, like myself.
I give CATCF a 10/10!
