I Am Trying to Break Your Heart (2002)
A beautifully filmed movie
This picture is a must see for any Wilco fan, and I highly recommend seeing it on the big screen if possible. Besides the great concert and 'in process' recording footage, it has great art direction and cinematography. If you're a fan, you already know the stroy; Band makes record, band gets rejected by label, bands fires member, band tours, band gets label, critics love band. Interesting behind the scenes stuff that doesn't make you want to ralph like watching that stupid VH-1 show.
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (2001)
What a waste
Great animation, good cast and even the story could have been good if handled well. Unfortunately, the script was the worst I've seen in a long time. Too many instances where one liners made up the bulk of the dialog. Too often conversations were dominated by bad cliches. I really couldn't help laughing at the silly things the characters said.
In addition to that, the 'bad guy' seemed too irrational to be real. You almost had to feel sorry for his stupidity. Also, too many unexplained things about the spirits and the phantoms. I mean, I didn't need explanation, but maybe someone could have told the characters in the film, and maybe they could have figured out what the problem was.
Overall, I was truly disappointed. This film could have been so much more.
The Fast and the Furious (2001)
What's the big deal, oh yea, duh.
The action was ok, and the soundtrack that accompanied was nice, very nice. But the whole thing was a bit over the top. I understand how big street racing is, but young Asian men with rich parents acting like gangsters intimidating folks for engines, toting automatic weapons? Hi-Jacking trucks for stereos? FBI sending in a punk undercover cop to infiltrate a $6 million dollar operation? Why would they bother?
I guess I like Point Break better, and Keanu Reeves is a better actor then Paul Walker (Wait! did I just say that?) It seemed like Walker was trying to act like Reeves in P.B. Vin Diesel offered up a decent performance, and the cars were nice, but that's it.
Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001)
Finally Disney Releases a decent film!
To my surprise, I really enjoyed Disney's latest animation installment. The Film had its lows, but overall I felt the story was strong and the characters were easy to relate to. It was also pleasant to see an Animated Disney film that was not a musical. I was about pushed to the limits with Tarzan. Thankfully they gave the music thing a rest. Another nice feature about the film is that the comedy was not completely dumbed down (a la Hercules), rather subtle so it still made the kids laugh while not make the adults feel giddy or just plain stupid.
One disappointment was the animation. With all the great animated films happening outside Disney studios, you would think they would move along and catch up a little. There is something to say about tradition, but imagine the possibilities with the story of Atlantis! Overall the film was entertaining, and definitely worth a trip to the multiplex.
