Sordid Lives: The Series (2008)
The Good and The Bad - Spoilers have ******
This could have been such a fine movie and TV show IF....the time spent on Ty was reduced to near nothing. The therapist meetings were useless. Yes, Ty - You are gay, honey. Don't need to pay $200 an hour to find out. It seems like there are two stories; one of Ty's exploration of who he really is and another of a delightfully peculiar family.Beth Grant is perfect as Aunt Sissy and I would hang out with her any time :) ***** ***** ***** Yes, Ty is GAY GAY GAY. His mother doesn't know She is told and loves him anyway. Whole damn series would have been better if she'd found out earlier and story lines had included Ty and Mama's knitting of the two cultures.
Airplane vs. Volcano (2014)
A Pleasant Saturday Night at Home
I knew this was an Asylum film from the start and have no complaints about quality - they are what they are. Two of my favorite things in one movie - terror in the air and a natural disaster, a can't miss! It lived up to my hopes. Brave passenger who can fly, specialist in the natural disaster on board, cute kid, black man with gravitas, nut job - all checked in. Pluses: Gravelly OIC shouting "Gentlemen, Let's Plow the Road!" Dean Cain being sweaty and stoic, lots of lava. Cons: What happened to Dean's family? How did I miss that? How did the flight attendant and Dean have time to fall in love?? Why did they include the obnoxious headache/mutiny dude? Overall, a nice way to spend a Saturday night doing laundry. catazure
1918 (1985)
God-awful, slow and dull
Matthew Broderick is one bright spot in this mire but even his performance, due to his character's deficiencies, can't save the movie. The general premise is that during WWI in a small Texas town patriotic fervor was competing with influenza fever for the chief topic of concern. Broderick's character ("Brother") wants to join up, brother-in-law Harold makes a fine noise but really doesn't want to join, people get the flu, bleed from the nose and die. I actually stopped the DVD on this one an readied it for return to Netflix before I finished watching the movie. The accents are not even done well. I've read that this is based on a play - and on the lives of the Foote family. I am sure it is of interest to the family but this is a mess.
Exploding Sun (2013)
Low Budget Fun Disaster!
I loved it. I enjoy disaster movies especially when the plot, however thin, holds together. I would have liked to have seen a better romance between Anthony Lemke's character and character Denise Balaban. He was handsome, she was adorable, and it was sweet. Interaction among the lead characters was smooth but predictable if you weren't willing to just enjoy the ride. David James Elliot and Lemke were handsome throughout and even at 53 Elliot is so charming he could pass for 35. Yum. I constantly search for disaster movies worth watching and this one was. The only criticism I have is for the parts of the movie that tried to be more serious than necessary. Julia Ormand is beautiful, as always, but married to a man far too old for her character's appearance. And it is odd to me that the actor playing their son is a blue-eyed, snow-blond guy. **shrug** It was an entertaining way to spend a Saturday night :)
Disaster on the Coastliner (1979)
Delightful 70's Treat - small spoilers
You have to go into this movie wanting what you're going to get. I love the TV movies of the 70s and 80s and especially love disaster movies. William Shatner is a charming con-man and clearly having a ball with his role. Robert Fuller plays a handsome cad; you get to see him in just a pair of boxers (woo hoo! he was a crush of mine from back in my preteen days when he starred in Emergency!)Lloyd Bridges is an obnoxious Fed and HG Marshall as the computer guy in charge. I couldn't figure out why the deranged dude who hijacked the trains had a kitten in his car. That was just weird. Overall a fun and satisfying watch if you enjoy the styles and culture of the late seventies - my only quibble was seeing Shatner and Fuller wearing Sansabelt slacks. Ick.
Collision Earth (2011)
Almost the worst SyFy flick ever
Here is the biggest problem to this movie - an unheroic hero. Acevedo spent a lot of time cringing from bad guys, hardly seemed to care when significant characters dies, and was generally boring to watch. I usually love SyFy Original cheese but it is usually tongue in cheek to some degree or so awful it is delicious. This was a congealed, soured Limburger cheese of a movie. Blah.
SPOILERS>>>>>>
******** ******** ********
Acevedo's partner in the escapade is killed and he seems to care less. No expression of concern. When the girl who whacked a bad guy in the head with a tire iron to save him died, again, no reaction.
Condominium (1980)
Great TV DIsaster Movie!
This really rocks from a disaster-aficionado perspective. I looked the movie up because it was filmed (in part) on Panama City Beach, FL which is part of my metro area. I also love Barbara Eden - who still has the "Jeannie" body at 46 in this movie. The cast is a mix of 60's-80's TV and movie favorites and goes as far back as Ralph Bellamy (a movie star as far back as the 30's). Dan Haggerty(Grizzly Adams), Pamela Hensley (Matt Houston), Don Gallagher(Ironsides) and many others appear in this flick; it's like Love Boat on steroids with a hurricane coming.
I found a DVD recorded from a CA TV station on Ebay and had to have it. When you get a chance to watch it, look at the long shots of the condo for good views of the Gulf of Mexico off Panama City Beach. Beautiful.
Growing the Big One (2010)
Just Cute - Nice time waster
Shannon Doherty is radio host Emma Silver who has inherited Grandpa Silver's farm - and it's mortgage. She moves into the farm house in the little country town and begins to sort out "what's next for Emma," meets the townsfolk and learns about the Giant Pumpkin raising contest. Romantic lead Kavan Smith (Seth)shows up PDQ. Handsome Stanford Grad Seth runs a fix-it shop and decided Emma's heart could use his kind of fixing.Plus, he wants to help her raise the prize-winning punkin:) Typical fish-out-of water jokes though the women of the town who take Doherty's character under their collective wing have some funny moments. If someone other than Shannon Doherty like Carla Guigino or another younger/more vulnerable actor had played Emma it would probably have been better. Shannon is just too long in the tooth for a role like this. As good as she was in Charmed she just doesn't play damsel in distress very well.
The Three Gifts (2009)
cute, heart-warming movie for Christmas!
I give it an 8 of 10 for what it is - a feel-good family oriented Christmas movie. Dean Cain's aunt Rita runs an orphanage while he and wife Cheri operate a handmade toy company on their lovely farm property, complete with horses. Dean (Jack Green) and Cheri can't have children although both desperately want kids. Aunt Rita talks them into taking 3 little boys (maybe 10 YO) for the Christmas holidays and the little guys overhear Jack and Cheri talking their first night about adopting ONE of them. They begin to compete to see who can get picked and also begin to work their ways into the Greens' hearts. The little boys draw together and become the team they were before the competition and we get a sweet happily ever after ending. Watch it with kids and grandkids, completely safe for all:)
