The Birds (1963)

what the heck was the point of this movie?
25 January 2006
This movie is a complete waste of time! I rented it because I am a big fan of suspense/thriller movies, and thus far I have enjoyed all of Hitchcock's movies I've seen (Vertigo, Pshycho, Spellbound, North by Northwest, Dial M for Murder etc.) I was very excited to see this movie, it has received very good reviews so I expected to be wowed like all the other Hitchcock movies.

I was not only not WOWed, I can't even say this movie is mediocre. This movie was just plain awful. There was honestly no plot. The only thing that happened was the birds went nuts and attacked a town. We don't know why, we don't know anything about the characters who got attacked. It wasn't even scary! It was actually somewhat cartoonish, with the liberal use of obviously-fake bright red "blood", and the screaming children and towns people were pretty silly.

All in all, I just can't believe this movie was made by the person who made Vertigo. That movie was EXCELLENT, it had a very solid and Suspenseful plot, great and complex characters, and it kept us guessing until the end. There was nothing mysterious about this movie. The only mystery was why did these birds go insane? But we were not even afforded the luxury of receiving an explanation. When the movie ended, I couldn't help myself and said "That has got to be the crappiest movie I have ever seen." You know when was the last time I said that? It was after watching Pearl Harbour.

Don't waste your time! Just because it was made by Hitchcock doesn't mean it's worth it.

Still annoyed ...

Not as bad as a chick-flick as most would have assumed
15 February 2003
I went and saw this movie because it was Valentine's Day (what the heck?) I expected it to be another stupid chick-flick but it turned out to have a deeper plot than the trailer had me assume. This is not an Oscar winner or anything, but for this type of movie, it was a delightful, funny, and feel-good movie. My boyfriend also enjoyed it more than he had expected. So girls, go drag your boyfriends to see this movie. They may end up enjoying it as much as we did.

complete waste of time
21 April 2002
This movie is an insult to my intelligence. Posed as a murder mystery/thriller, this film turns out to be nothing more than a film filled with unintelligent and silly "twists." Throughout the movie, my fellow movie watchers laughed at parts that were meant to be "deep" but we found cheesy. Don't even watch this movie during matinee. It is really a waste of time and money.

Pearl Harbor (2001)

The film should have been named "Pearl Harbor and the Doolittle Raid" instead
27 May 2001
THE MOVIE WAS WAY TOO LONG!!! It dragged on unnecessarily. I came in to see a film about Pearl Harbor, not Pearl Harbor and the Doolittle raid. If the film stopped with the Battle of Pearl Harbor, it would easily have been a very decent film! The special effects are entertaining. The first half of the film is well-written; the flow, though slow at times, is pretty good overall. There are also many comical moments that provides great comic relieve. However, after FDR's famous speech in Congress, the film begins a torturously slow and highly melodramatic fall. The Doolittle Raid is utterly unnecessary to the plot. All in all, the film dragged on, and it is sad that it dragged on, for the first part of the film was actually pretty decent.

Could have been a great movie if the anachronisms didn't cripple it
11 May 2001
When one hears Queen's "WE WILL ROCK YOU" and see Medieval peasants thumping and singing along to this song, one KNOWS that this potentially great movie will be a disappointment from the hype it has been receiving.

The movie is itself entertaining and funny; that's why I decided to give it a 6. The costumes and the sets are great, and pretty authentic too I might add. The plot, however, is a little thin, and the blatantly anachronistic nature of the music and the dance added to the implausibility of the movie.

This movie is not bad enough for me to tell you to abstain from seeing it. Take my advice, however, and see it during matinee.
