Apocalypse Now (1979)
An astonishing achievement.
Coppola's magnum opus. One of the greatest films of all time, this is a superb reworking of Conrad's 'Heart of Darkness'. The sound design, cinematography and every other element on display here is of the highest order. Surreal and hypnotic.
Watch it in a good theatre with a great sound system on the biggest screen you can find. You won't forget it...
Also, watch the documentary of the making of the film 'Hearts of Darkness', directed by Eleanor Coppola - it's just as extraordinary as the film itself.
Tender Mercies (1983)
Such a remarkable, understated drama.
This is directed with such restraint - Beresford just allows his actors to shine and Duvall is in top form here. Such a beautiful and moving film.
Busanhaeng (2016)
Now this is a zombie film!
Really fresh take on the tired zombie genre - it's an emotional thrill-ride that doesn't let up.
Raising Arizona (1987)
Solid Coen brothers outing
It's a pretty solid film from the brothers, but they have delivered so many masterpieces, that some of their catalogue pales in comparison. That's not to say there's anything wrong with this film - it's great - probably better than most, but they have set the bar really high with many of their other films.
Kairos (2019)
Sublime
A sublime little piece of Australian cinema. Apparently this was made on a shoestring budget, but there is so much heart and soul here that it's easy to overlook some of the flaws. Slowly draws you in and builds to an emotionally charged finale that stands as one of the more bold endings to a film that I've seen.
The Year My Voice Broke (1987)
Memories
This is such an iconic Australian film from my youth. Noah Taylor is a national treasure.
Fa yeung nin wah (2000)
Stunning
Simply one of the most beautiful and moving films I have ever seen. The cinematography by Doyle is gorgeous, as are the performances, design and direction. It's so expressive. One of my all time favourite films.
