Equilibrium (2002)
Absolutely great movie.
I watched this movie a long time ago, but felt the need to post my thoughts on it.
The only reason I watched this movie is because my wife thinks Tay Diggs is hot. That's it. I had asked her to pick up a movie and this is what she brought home. I read the line on the front "Forget the Matrix" and thought "pfffft".
And then I pushed play.
This movie is wonderful. Great acting, good story, decent (this is the movies' biggest downfall) special effects, and hands down the most interesting take and styling of martial arts I have seen.
If you like Sci-fi, if you like martial arts movies, if you like books like "1984", "Animal Farm", or movies like "Blade Runner" and "The Matrix" pick up this movie.
You will not be disappointed.
300 (2006)
Excellent and fun movie
Great movie with outstanding special effects. If you want historical accuracy steer clear of this film as it is based on a comic book and can only loosely be said to have anything to do with reality.
Individuals who find the movie offensive because the Persians were the "bad guys" and find a political theme are looking too hard. Every movie needs a bad guy, and Hollywood is hardly known for reality in its villains (think Max Baer in "Cinderella Man". By all accounts, he was a very nice man and a far cry from the arrogant and evil Baer in the movie).
Watch this movie if you want to enjoy a well done, excellently choreographed, FUN movie.
This movie is NOT kid friendly, as it is extremely violent. If you enjoyed "Gladiator" or "Troy" go see this movie!
Event Horizon (1997)
An intelligent scary ride.
This is actually one of my favorite horror movies. It is smart, scary, and yes, even a little disturbing at times. While some of the ideas behind the science are absurd, that is why it's called science-"fiction".
The cast does a good job in their roles, and the setting for the movie is dark, creepy, and perfectly done.
I have read several bad reviews in these comments, and I have seen basically two categories of such. One is that the science involved is ridiculous. This is a movie. A horror movie. A horror movie on a spaceship in the future. I think it's time to suspend your disbelief and enjoy the movie.
The second complaint I have been reading is even worse. That the movie is too scary and disturbing! I don't think I have EVER sat down to watch a scary movie and been upset that it was...scary. Perhaps the movie was accidentally placed in the children's section.
Regardless, the movie is fun and scary. Exactly what most people look for in a scary movie. I highly suggest renting this gem and enjoying it for what it is: One of the better horror movies of the late 90's.
The Hills Have Eyes (2006)
Gruesome Fun
The movie has got some bad press because of the level of violence and gore, but I find this a tad ridiculous. The previews alone set the stage for an extremely disturbing venture into a families encounter with violent radiated mutants. Anyone expecting a relaxing family film has issues.
The makeup crew does a wonderful job with the mutants, and the story is on par with your average slasher flick. Overall, the movie was worth watching, but not one I would rush out to buy. The suicide scene was superbly done, and the rape scene (which seems to be the primary cause of so much conflict) was scary and intense. Just like it should be. I found the "I am a peace-loving hippie until you make me mad then I turn into Rambo" schtick a bit of a stretch, but hey, it's Hollywood right?
If you are looking for an intense, scary movie with wonderful special effects...watch it. If extreme violence and gore in film bothers you...don't.
