Transformers (2007)
Good, but not THAT good...
First of all, let me say that all in all: I liked this movie. However, I was hoping it would link in a bit better with the original: The characters were updated for this movie - that is OK, and expected. But some were SO updated, you could not quite recognize them from the original TV show. Especially the Decepticons were a bit difficult to keep apart, as they were quite similar when transformed into robots.
The voices were not kept close enough to the original. Megatron and Starscream had very distinctive voices in the TV series, but they were completely different in the movie. Kudos for keeping Optimus Primes voice like the original.
Optimus Prime was wise and tactful in the TV series, but in the movie he at times are quite clumsy - for instance in the scene in Sams back garden. I found that rather disrespectful...
Finally I was waiting the whole movie for Megatron to transform into the mighty gun - but he never did! All in all - this was always going to be a movie for the old Transformers fans of the 80-ies. It was never going to be realistic, so why strive to make it more realistic than the original? I wanted to see old Transformers revived. I did not want to see what the Transformers would look like if they were invented today...
Still a good movie, though...
The Star Wars Holiday Special (1978)
Truly horrible!
A film about Chewbaccas family, and their celebration of Life Day. A film so bad, it was only aired once. George Lucas has been quoted as saying: If he had the time, he would break every existing VHS-copy of this movie - it is that bad! It contains Leia singing, Chewbaccas dad watching a fantasy movie, with erotic undertones, acrobats, an animated section and a rock concert. All your favorite characters from the first movie is here - one worse than the other.
The film isn't helped by the fact that much of the dialog is in Chewbaccas language.
There are also many logical holes in the story, like when Chewbaccas wife calls the local tradesman on the video phone, she gets to watch a long sequence of what goes on in the shop before the tradesman suddenly notices that someone is calling.
The core of the story - if you can call it a story - is that Chewbacca isn't home for Life Day in time - he is held up by fighting the Empire. This probably only takes up 5% of the movie time - most of the movie takes place in Chewbaccas home. We see what goes on with the family while they wait, with occasional brief appearances by characters from the first Star Wars movie.
This is truly a horrible movie - worth watching, just to see how bad it can be done!
Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002)
It's getting there...
Episode 4-6 was great! Episode 1 was just about as bad a job as one could do with such an awaited movie. So what about episode 2?
To be honest: It linked up the horrible episode 1 with what we know will happen in episode 3. The first half might be a good movie, but not with the name "Star Wars" associated with it, but perhaps with a title with the word "Love" in it.
However the second half almost makes up for it. The scene with Yoda fighting with his light sabre was worth the ticket on its own, but couldn't save the movie from a mediocre grade.
But, thinking of the end of episode 2 and the beginning of episode 4, I can't imagine that anyone could make anything but a GREAT episode 3!
So, in my disappointment over episode 2 I'm left with a certainty that in three years we will be witness to one of the best movies ever made! It must be!
Mulholland Dr. (2001)
Good movie, yet disappointing...
There can be no doubt that this is a David Lynch movie. "Strange" is the first word that strikes me. This is a good movie, where you are left with a few unanswered questions at the end. However, for those of you who have seen Twin Peaks, this is not nearly as strange, and so I must say I'm disappointed.
If you're a Lynch-fan, go see the movie, but don't expect one of his best movies!
