supernatural elements featuring the Iran-Iraq War
26 March 2023
As a psychological horror film directed by Iranian filmmaker Babak Anvari. Under The Shadow combines paranormal aspects with the 1980s Iran-Iraq War as its backdrop.

With relation to Iranian culture, the movie emphasizes issues like alienation, gender roles in a patriarchal society, and the role of religion in daily life. Shideh, the single mother who plays the main character, is caught between the expectations of being a good mother and her desire to pursue a profession in medicine. The movie also examines the widespread apprehension that the Iranian people experienced throughout the war.

In terms of cinematography, the film features a dark atmosphere that immerses the audience in the same sense of foreboding and claustrophobia experienced by the characters. But, unlike many Hollywood horror films, this one does not mainly rely on jump scares or overly overdone special effects.

Overall, Under the Shadow is an interesting film to watch from the standpoint of Iranian culture, offering a unique perspective on the internal and external issues suffered by the Iranian people during the Iran-Iraq War.

it is comedy, it is understandable if some like or dislike this
25 March 2023
Every film will always have different opinions and criticisms from film critics. There may be some critics who do not like "The Lunch Date" and express their opinions publicly. However, the decision to award the Oscar is not only based on the opinions of critics, but also on the evaluation of experts and juries consisting of filmmakers and film industry experts.

Despite some critics not liking the film, the Oscar award received by "The Lunch Date" shows that the film has high artistic and technical quality and managed to capture the attention of experts and juries. Everyone has different preferences and views when it comes to art, so it is understandable if some like or dislike this film.

Mystic River (2003)

one of my fav mistery movie
23 March 2023
Directed by Clint Eastwood and adapted from a novel by Dennis Lehane.

First and foremost, the performances by the actors are incredibly strong and emotional. Each actor delivers a powerhouse performance that draws the viewer into the story being told. The complex plot and surprising twists also make the film incredibly engaging.

However, the film also has a very dark and heavy atmosphere. Some scenes of violence and strong adult themes may make some viewers uncomfortable. Additionally, the film has a slow pace that may leave some viewers feeling bored.

Overall, for me, "Mystic River" is a powerful and compelling film with impressive performances from the cast. However, viewers should be prepared for the very dark and heavy themes and atmosphere.

Stop wasting time to think, just watch

Is there a plot-hole? I'm not sure whether there it is or not. I see just a something like delusional vision or imagination, or even a miracle. But above that all, I like Kate's slice of life that shows us a moral value about being a good person is a good thing. Rom-com movie that shows us an easy-to-follow plot and a bit entertaining.

bullying is not acceptable, anywhere, anytime.

Nice scoring, nice cinematography, especially in camera angle. One of the flaws is how the school atmosphere showed, too quiet.

The origin of Ne Zha
13 February 2020
Never give up on a fate, we have our own's life choices. Laugh, then cry, a movie that has a family drama, a movie that will show you a bad side of bullying, a movie that has a moral story in it. And it all packed cleverly into an animation movie. Some of the comedy is misplaced, but I'm sure this just a personal opinion, but it annoys me.

Family (in crime) drama
13 February 2020
A higher level of a family tragedy movie. Emotional, dramatic, and also a heartwarming family story. The expression of depressed, and combine with the sorrow-nuance scoring will bring the audience into the ocean's waves of tragedy.

Fun, it's fun. broken heart story of Harley Quinn. The music, the fashion design, the set, the dialog, it's colorful yet with a bit dark DC.

What we can expect from the girl as a movie director?

Meet Greta, a great director that will make you blame The Academy for not including her as Oscar Best Director nominees. For me, IMHO, she is more entitled to get Oscar Best Director nomination than Todd Philips.

How she direct the entire cast and crew, a camera movement, a music selection, everything is amazing.

A story plot that uses forward and backward flow (a non-linear plot) packed very cleverly. It also shows how smart the use of transition in a film.

Just for fun
13 February 2020
I can't say this movie is bad, but more can't say this movie is great. Fun and entertaining with the Reynold's style. What we will see is just a lucky, smart, limitless money, and super technology on the 6's side. But a super weak is the only thing I can see on the enemy's side.

After all, we can enjoy it as an entertainment show, or I can say a "theme park" genre movie.

need a lot of improvement
12 February 2020
Starting from the nuances of horror, The Turning seems like promising. ok that is the start, then what happen? i dont wanna spoil the script but i just want to tell you that.. that movie is like a for example, you get a task from your school, you have to write a thesis, you get an idea, you start to write, your imagination goes wild, but you realize that the due date is the next day, you feel super sleepy, you write everything what you see in your mind, you write it all, and voila everybody hate it.

Mangku Jiwo
2 February 2020
Another higher level for indonesian horror. Mangkujiwo shows us the origin of Kuntilanak, trying to answer all the question about 'what Mangkujiwo is' in the Kuntilanak universe from 2006 to 2019. Azhar Kinoi Lubis gives a story instead of a jumpscare-thing to a horror movie. This is what a real origin means.

Past to present to past and to present again. unfortunately, as an origin movie, Mangkujiwo failed to tell us about their world. There's lack of dramatical value, only torture everywhere. We have no feel to anybody, there's relationship between one character and another, the only we see is just hostilities, and rivalries.

Thats all.

You get the answer about 'what Mangkujiwo is'?

Easy to follow, linear plot, suitable to be watched as entertainment.

Another exorcism movie with a cliche story. Plothole? yes. Recommended to watch? depend on your purpose of watching, throw all of high expectations, sit still, enjoy this as a tale and watch.

Donnie Darko (2001)
10/10
Donnie Darko is an amazing watching-movie experience for me.
22 October 2019
I wonder what's in the minds of filmmakers who created Donnie Darko. This film looks absurd in various aspects of cinematography, ranging from shooting, color grading, to scoring music.

However, after watching it, for some reason, I want to go back to watching it again. When I have watched it the second time, I want to watch it again.

There is something strange, yes, I see this film as an absurd film, but instead, it gives me a unique viewing experience. The first thing I underline is the expression of Jake Gyllenhaal (one of my favorite actors, for me Gyllenhaal is already at God-tier actor level).

First watching, I consider this an absurd movie that will just pass by on my movie list. But it made me want to watch it again. The second time I watch, I began to feel something strange in this movie but did not understand whether the oddity was in narration or visualization. Third-time watch, this is a movie that was worked on with a very extraordinary idea, even I suspect the filmmaker also did not know what was happening with this movie. Donnie Darko became an absurd genius movie that unconsciously made me watch it repeatedly. Tonight is the fourth time I watched it.

What A Netflix TV Series
12 October 2019
Dark S01E01 TV series with solid cinematographic techniques, from taking picture angles to the combination of lighting. The longshot in this first episode is awesome. With the strains of a strong scoring success gave a bold impression on this film. The premise given is fairly intelligent and unique. For acting there are still some expressions that are not strong enough to be in accordance with the ambience of the current situation.

The ending of the film that gives the effect "what's next?" Is very interesting.

Watch this before you make a forest walk
29 September 2019
Holidays are indeed very suitable to relieve fatigue from daily activities. But in The Ritual, David Bruckner shows that human plans do not always run smoothly. Watching this film, I felt a terrible atmosphere like in Hereditary, but it was packed in a tourist trip like in Midsommar.

Music scoring here gives the impression of a cult, leading the audience to drift along with the feelings of the actors. The right POV shot camera technique provides a thrilling effect. Dark tone shows how scary the location of the trip. It's just that there are still some plots that seem absurd, but all of them can be answered with "sect".

The Ritual provides a tense experience in watching horror movies without jump scare scattered.

Modern Times just a hidden treasure in the middle of modern films
29 September 2019
I found this hidden treasure while trying to find entertainment amid everyday fatigue. I realized how solid the scriptwriting for this Modern Times was. The comedy element that is combined with social criticism, life tragedy, and the romance of love, is presented solidly even though it has no dialogue at all. Expressions and gestures are key here, and all of them are executed perfectly by the crew and cast.

The visuals that are given will not be as grand as the film now, but the basic techniques of cinematography starting from the angle until the transition just flows to the point that we are unaware that this is a silent film.

The interesting premise is conveyed accompanied by scoring music that gives the audience's tension up and down. It's no wonder why Charlie Chaplin has become an idol.

Beautiful drama view
27 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
In a story, there must be something the author wants to convey. Annie Proulx wrote Brokeback Mountain with a realistic approach to the forbidden relationship between two cowboys. Every detail of the meeting until the emergence of chemistry is explained neatly.

Ang Lee embodies Brokeback Mountain in a charming cinematography. A longshot of a scene on Mount Brokeback is beautifully presented, then combined with a drama between two cowboys, Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger).

Brokeback Mountain presents beautiful stories and visuals, then combines them with beautiful scoring, giving a drama story with all its problems strongly.

Enemy (2013)

be ready for the puzzle
27 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Watching movies is like arranging puzzles. That's the experience you will feel when watching Enemy (2013) by Denis Villeneuve. Actually the narrative used in this film will look simple when you've managed to arrange the puzzle in the order, because the duration of the film is only 91 minutes. For the plot itself, walk slowly and thrillingly. The plot of Enemy runs linearly, but viewers will often be fooled by flashback scenes that are suddenly and unnoticed.

Another intelligence of Enemy is the use of allegories and metaphors everywhere. Starting from the spider, twin characters seemed to look doppelganger, and the damaged city order.

Enemy doesn't seem like a movie that can be enjoyed immediately. It takes a high concentration to digest and organize the puzzle.

Prisoners (2013)

Nice Story
25 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Denis Villeneuve is a director that worth considering for fans of the mystery genre. In Prisoners, Denis shows how cold the atmosphere is when a tragedy occurs, accompanied by the calm strains of scoring, the cold and emotional expressions of Hugh Jackman and Gyllenhaal play the role perfectly. The color palette was successfully displayed in bringing atmosphere to life, cold and blue for hopeless scene and warm colors when hope began to emerge. Silhouette technique remains a mainstay and it was a trademark of Villeneuve.

The narration about the abduction of two young children is told to be very strong and intelligent. Keller Dover had a strong suspicion towards Alex for kidnapping case, which made him sadistically torture Alex, then led detective Loki's suspicion to Dover because of his suspicious movements, then finally led to a twist about the actual kidnappers.

The ending scene of Prisoners is just that Villeneuve seemed to give freedom to the audience because each person will easily guess but with different answers and theories.

Wait till you see the end scene
23 September 2019
A film that has a calm atmosphere of the story. Calm cinematographic techniques, combined with music scoring that is soft-flowing and solemn, perfected by the cold expression of Gyllenhaal.

The storyline of Nocturnal Animals steps slowly but firmly, giving the audience a sense of pity and drama. A tragedy was successfully displayed strongly. The plot of this film is not linear, so it's best to enjoy it in calm conditions with full concentration.

A Smart Show
22 September 2019
Mystery stories require the carefulness of the writer in compiling riddles, chronology, location details, and hidden clues. Furthermore, the director have to visualize the script into a mise en scene.

The Invisible Guest perfectly packs the premise of a mystery into a thrilling and stunning. We knew that the mystery story will feel normal without a twist, and this movie is very brilliant to present a twist into the story.

The acting of the players is executed carefully from the expression to the movements. Music scoring successfully fills an ambience of the mystery. A smart show.

unstable boys in unstable movies
22 September 2019
Good Boys tried to present the unstable group of 6th graders. The premise of this film is clearly seen and successfully delivered by the filmmaker. A story that is simple, funny, and easy to follow is a plus.

The thing that needs to be regretted is the acting of the Bean Bag Boys feels unstable, there are scenes that are less than perfect. Izaac Wang often feels rigid in playing his role. Some transitions are also seen jumping jacks.

Nightcrawler (2014)

Gyllenhaal shows us the Darkside of Journalism
22 September 2019
The strength of this film lies in the cinematographic techniques and strong acting skills of a Gyllenhaal who is able to give life to each of his close-up expressions. Gyllenhaal went on a strict diet to lose weight to 10 KG to portray the character of Lou Bloom who has a thin, cold-tempered and psychopathic stature.

Nightcrawler seems to want to show the dark side of the television industry which in this film is emphasized in news broadcast journalism. A satire to show how valuable a rating on the television show.

The plot that runs linear makes Nightcrawler storyline not difficult to follow. The drama side is highlighted through the many dialogue scenes that are reinforced by Gyllenhaal's expression skills.

Ad Astra (2019)

Great Pitt!
22 September 2019
Ad Astra became a kind of tribute for Brad Pitt who announced he wanted to retire from the world of cinema. James Gray and Brad Pitt are the right combination. The treatment given by Gray to Pitt as a main character is very solid. The number of close-up shots shows Pitt's skill in playing a Roy who has a wife, children and father far from him.

Clever techniques of Gray is the use of POV shots put the audience as if it were in the position of the actor, in addition to the visualization space that is displayed by aerial techniques completes the experience the audience to join traveled into space.

The use of linear paths with multiple flashbacks makes it easy for viewers to follow the story, a fast pace at the beginning and gradually slow down followed by a touching ending that makes Ad Astra a dramatic spectacle.
