Misery (1990)
They just don't make movies like this anymore.
I tend to review films where the acting is one of the main characteristics, and oh my is the acting superb in this gem of a suspense thriller. Cathy Bates, playing the severely mentally damaged Annie, really deserved her Oscar for this outstanding performance. James Caan is also great and very realistically portrays a man who slowly realizes what is going on but understands that one has to tread very carefully with a mind like hers. The film is also a time piece in as much as it displays the, by our standards, obsolete technology of the time (no cell phones, no internet, no WhatsApp, no social media). One thing that I kept thinking about, all through this wonderfully entertaining film, was why they can't make movies like this today? It is simple yet brilliant.
The Remains of the Day (1993)
Acting at its absolute finest.
This is a very interesting love story and political drama, but hoesntly it could've been about anything and still be a masterpiece thanks to the preformances.
Although Anthony Hopkins' character is low key, it is nonetheless one of the strongest performances that I've had the pleasure of feasting my eyes on. What a treat for anyone who respects and understands what good acting really is all about. I have watched this film so many times especially for the performances given, first and foremost, the one given, nay, graced upon us, by Anthony Hopkins. Of course, the other performances by Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant and an especially good performance by superman himself, Cristopher Reeve, are not to be overlooked.
If you haven't seen this movie yet, lucky you, you're in for a treat!
If you have, then you know what I'm talking about. Enjoy!
Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi (2001)
The definition of beauty in the form of film.
This film, because this is film in the truest sense of the word, is one of the most beautiful films ever made. This film is so wonderful and pertinent to my cultural upbringing that I still remember when I saw it for the very first time. I had heard a lot of good stuff about it but I was not expecting to be as blown away as I was. I remember that there were a couple of American reviewers on the DVD giving a short prologue before the movie started and they said something to the effect of "if this is your first time watching this film, then we're really envious of you!". Boy were they right! The musical score, the pace of the film, the animation, the story, the...everything! It's simply magical...Studio Ghibli really outdid themselves
P.S. As this film is pure poetry then do what you would with a beautiful poem or song, watch it in its original language. Don't watch it dubbed! (Just a piece of advice) D.S.
Narcos (2015)
Entertaining show, solid performances, terrible accents.
If you're not a native Spanish speaker you'll probably not notice much in terms of how Wagner Moura (Pablo Escobar) butchers the Spanish language with his heavy Brazilian accent. Pablo Escobar, the main persona, spoke with a Medellin, Paisa, accent which is not emulated at all by Mr. Moura. But you know what? I forgive Mr Moura. Why? His performance is so good as Escobar and so convincing that it gradually makes you forget about his thick Brazilian accent.
What is unforgivable though is the suuuuper Swedish accent of actor Mattias Varela, playing the roll of the Cali Cartel security chief, Jorge Salcedo, in season three. I mean come on! At least Mr Moura gave a solid performance and had an accent regional to Latin America. Mr Varela on the other hand gives a, at best, wooden performance, and that combined with his almost comically Swedish accent, especially when speaking English, makes for some almost unwatchable scenes where Salcedo, supposedly a Colombian, is chatting away as he were the Swedish chef from the Muppet Show.
Netflix please, hire accent coaches next time.
Apart from Mouras Brazilian accent and Varelas (comically) Swedish accent, the show is really good, well made and entertaining.
Monty Python's Flying Circus (1969)
A masterpiece of contemporary western comedy.
For me as well as for a great many other semi nerdy and amateur intellectual kids, Monty Python's Flying Circus was more than just another comedy show. It was a part of our academic and intellectual development, because mind you, Monty Python is by no means your everyday slap stick/fart/pie in the face humor (although they do feature an advanced and hilarious pie in the face sketch!) and is definitely not enjoyed by "the masses". They have served as an inspiration to many comedians and been copied by numerous others and will continue to be watched and enjoyed forever, in spite of the fact that the show is from 1969!
