American Gangster (2007)
The Black Godfather (Classic Denzel)
Where to start?
This is a plot driven movie, so if you're expecting a shoot-em' up Arnold hack job, one, you should seriously consider changing your taste in movies, and two, a mindless shoot-em'-up would be near heresy considering the acting pedigree of Denzel Washington and Russel Crowe.
Denzel offers the stoic, eloquent, controlled fury Denzel is famous for. Thankfully most of the movie revolves around him. Crowe's role is rather small by Russel Crowe standards.
We follow Denzel's character, Frank Lucas, as he begins to establish his heroin empire in Harlem, meanwhile Crowe's character, is mainly concerned with him piecing together Lucas' ingenious smuggling ring as he heads up the newly formed drug enforcement police. Denzel's shockingly vengeful character is built throughout the movie, while Crowe's is sparse, as it should be.
There is an interesting side story battle between Denzel and a particularly corrupt cop, who himself has a very interesting end.
The movie stays true to the actual story, and the period, as unbelievable as it is At first you find yourself rooting for the bad guy, however Scott carefully details the effect Lucas' organization is having on the community, which then lends you to appreciate the job of the police.
The end of the movie wraps up nicely with a summary of all the main characters' endings, and some very interesting facts about the original 70's era drug enforcement cops. The most interesting being that three-quarters where convicted on corruption charges!
Another Denzel classic!!!
Penn & Teller: Bullshit! (2003)
Propaganda with a twist of profanity.
At first I thought this show might be a more energetic approach to discussing pressing issues. Big mistake. I read a previous comment that used the word 'propaganda' and i couldn't agree more. this show is horrible, and it becomes even more horrible when you realize that some people actually think that this show has a shred of credibility.
They don't make the slightest attempt to engage in objective discussion on anything. the entire show is just their opinion on whatever the subject may be. for instance, the show on abstinence was a complete joke and took on the familiar anti-Christian spin. They constantly pull percentages out of thin air and think that they are proving something. They find the worst representatives of the other side in a transparent attempt to discredit their view. I've never heard of anything so ridiculous in my life than the nonsense in the abstinence program. They had some so-called expert on they saying that babies the womb routinely pleasure themselves. They had a rep from planned parenthood say that abstinence programs teach that touching someone's genitals will result in pregnancy. Best of all, the capped off the show by saying that you should make you own decision and not left someones religious 'fairy tales' guide you. This order coming from someone saying not to take orders.
The show is laced with so much unnecessary profanity its difficult to watch. Every other word if profanity, and it adds nothing to the show.
This show is just another wolf in sheep's clothing tool used to spew its agenda to the public. Horrible.
The most troubling part of it is that some person is actually going to go into this show with an open, unbiased mind think that this show is objective and journalistic, and because they have to fun-loving, non-confrontational goofs starring the show, they won't take this show for what it is, just a piece of propaganda.
Rage and Discipline (2004)
Rage and Discipline, excellent movie!
This is a very well made, well written movie. Of course due to the cast begin all black, and the subject matter being the reality of life of many inner city blacks, you can expect the movie to receive bad review from critics. Do not be mistaken, this is an excellent movie. It has a very gritty filming, and dialogue that is so natural, its doesn't feel like watching a movie. I have seen this movie twice, and it was even better the second time. This movie is basically a true to life microcosm of inner city life and love. The relationships between the characters in the movie are carefully developed and the progression is natural. Very, very good movie. The only bad thing i can say about it is the language in the movie is very explicit, but again, its true.
