When the Street Lights Go On (2017)
Raw portrayal of life
This is one of those pieces of art that require you to keep your focus right in it or you'll miss too much and end up disappointed. Seriously, please do concentrate and binge if possible.
I'll try to avoid spoilers and keep to what's discernible from the short IMDb description.
Gosh, I'm still shaking a bit inside and out, what an intense ride. It's raw, it's beautiful, it's harrowing, it's a story of how trauma can unravel more than one life, how it affects a whole community and especially those closest to what happened.
Life gets ripped apart and stitched together in the psyche here like it does in real life. Of that, we are shown the results and consequences as we follow along on this journey with the narrator. Trauma affects people in different ways and that's masterfully imbued here by the story, acting and accompanying visuals, soundtrack and the rest.
This show can bring out lots of thoughts and emotions, but the short format episodes give us breathers and then on we go again. With enough focus, you can get pulled right in and hopefully, afterwards, be left with things that help your resilience and coping mechanisms, along with an experience only you can describe.
10/10, recommended.
Dear Zoe (2022)
Dear Creators of this Story,
Thank You. Thank You for writing that incredible novel Philip, Thank You everyone who worked on bringing this story to the screen.
Your work has helped me on this journey of healing. There's so much broken inside me, but this, all of this, all you've done, has helped and will continue to help for the rest of my life.
To anyone reading, if you're going through something, anything, I hope this work of art can bring-or has brought-you something tangible and special like it brought me.
I decided to go and take in the film and novel just because of the name. There was a kind of a calling in it, an invite to take a moment and experience a story. I had no idea it would have so many effects on me, links to my life, lines on paper and screen that still resonate with everything before, and everything after.
And all those drawings... how perfectly captured, created, drawn, made and *told*. Thank You for the Notebook, too.
Pitch Black (2000)
Strobos wrecked a great film
I just cannot understand why so, so many films still have and in that era especially had strobo lights. Sure, it was cool new tech, but it's WAY overused here. Even simply making it fade smoothly in and out in 2-3 seconds, with less sudden brightness and a more level scene brightness that could still have obscured details with darkness.
I got a terrible aural migraine attack from the very first minutes because of that constant flashing; there was no warning and now my right eye is getting blinded by that migraine and the pain is growing worse. Yes, I could've googled whether it might have them but with such a high rating and no reviews I saw mentioning this, I just didn't expect it, not in the least, I was just excited for some good space action.
Smoothing the light effects out or combining that with only partial slower motion light on alarms or the like, would've fixed this even for many with epilepsy, for whom effects like this can be deadly. And for us with photosensitive issues like migraine or other such conditions it "only" causes momentary discomfort as some like to call this pain and the other symptoms, from hours to days, for example.
But alas, now the only possibility is to have a device read the plot out for me as the meds start working. I'm just so sad I can't enjoy yet another lauded sci-fi film because of these simple to fix things. Big thanks for creating this piece of art anyway-stills and the story sound and look interesting, and it's great most people get to watch it.
No offense meant to anyone.
The Intern (2015)
Watch this.
This is one of those very, very few films that left me with so much happiness that I kept smiling throughout the credits, reading each and every name of every person who contributed to this wonderful work of art.
And I'm still smiling after it ended and yes, using a handkerchief to wipe away some tears. Just sitting here, thinking back, memorizing those lovely and touching moments that fill The Intern.
From the script to the acting and soundtrack to the perfect little details in every scene and the way emotion just flows throughout it all, I just cannot recommend this enough.
Please do yourself a favour and watch this with an open mind-and especially an open heart. Don't watch the trailer or read reviews that contain spoilers, just let yourself be immersed in the story as it unfolds.
National Treasure: Edge of History (2022)
PAGE 47!!!!!!!!!!!
The National Treasure vibe took a while to pick up but oh man this is great. The show follows the legacy of the movies with new twists and modern takes on who can do what, which allows audiences of all ages to enjoy this.
And those of you who have been waiting for news on page 47, like me... I'm absolutely thrilled for the future episodes and seasons, and for National Treasure 3 that's set to come out next year.
I rewatched the movies before and during the show, and there is plenty of nostalgia (not gonna mention what, to avoid spoilers)... from small details to big nods and references, in a way that doesn't repeat the previous stories or act as a "cash grab", but instead ties it all together quite nicely.
You will also learn quite a bit of cool stuff about Agent Sadusky if you watch this show. Recommended! 10/10.
Cha Cha Real Smooth (2022)
I am just so mind blown, this was absolutely incredible
Cha Cha Real Smooth is one of the best films I've seen in years, and I've seen a lot. It hit home so completely and directly that I cannot even try to describe how I'm feeling right now. Still in tears, happy and relieved and hopeful and heartbroken tears.
This film is so different from most that are made today that I am so glad they took the "risk" and gave it the investment it deserves, because it really does breathe fresh air into the whole industry, like someone said. It's beautiful, it's original, it's emotional and funny and just so full of life.
Phenomenal script, acting, cinematography and everything. They got us to ponder the what ifs together with the characters and gave us hope in these dark times filled with both physical and mental pain. They show that there are possibilities for each and every one of us no matter the circumstances, in a non-cliché manner.
Thank you everyone who was a part of bringing us this film. It's something I personally really needed right at this moment. It's also a piece of art that I'll try to find and preserve on physical media for its unmeasurable value.
Alien (1979)
Strobo lights ruined it
The great story, wonderful acting, interesting concept and the whole end were totally and completely ruined for me by the damned strobo lights that gave me a terrible migraine attack.
There was no warning about them and they were apparently used for a "chaotic" effect, but that made the end unwatchable even in a brightly lit room and dimmed OLED TV brightness. They are also not logical story-wise: how would that kind of lighting help at all in a real emergency? It just prevents the crew from seeing all the instruments they'd need to handle and the only thing those lights accomplished was causing many viewers immeasurably bad headaches.
1/10 because of that for an otherwise 8/10 movie.
