Nash Bridges (1996)
Pretty Mediocre
Nash Bridges was a standard run of the mill action cop show with corny dialogue and unbealivable plots. Only notable becuase it featured Don Johnson in an attempt to recapture some of his "Miami Vice" glory. Despite not coming any where near the fame and popularity MV saw Nash Bridges still managed to be successful on Friday nights (beating the much more superior if ratings challenged Homicide: Life on the Streets.) However you could say that H:Lots had its revenge. The Law & Order spin off Special Victims Unit debuted(which had Homicide alum Richard Belzer reprising his H:Lots role of Detective John Munch not to mention H:lots timeslot). creamed Nash Bridges in the ratings finally causing Nash Bridges cancellation.
New Jack City (1991)
A good film.
Through it borrows heavily from such gangster movies as "Scarface." New Jack City is a good film that teaches (without preaching) the dangers of drug use and those individuals who would use it for their own gain. The film centers around Nino Brown a drug lord who rises to power with his gang by capitalizing on the drug of choice (at the time) crack cocaine. He soon builds a huge empire known as the CMB. A police officer (Mario Van Peoples) is assigned to bring him down to do this he forms a special unit comprised of Scotty Appleton (Ice-T) and Nick Peretti (Judd Nelson). The unit is able to bring down the CMB which was crumbling thanks to the power mad Brown, through Nino isn't punished by the law, he does meet his end.
The film is a fast pace (moving from 1986 to 89' in only the first thirty minutes). Through their are some obvious stereotypes (most notably the Italian gangsters Nino crosses). It's a good film. That has a good rhythm to it, and is probably one of the best to come out of the urban gangster genre of early 90's.
Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987)
It started out weak but man did it get better.
I remember when I was a kid, I would sit infront of the tv every night at 7. Flip on the tube and watch TNG. It was exciting to see what new adventures Picard and co. would get in next. Back then I admit I appreciated TNG for it's strange aliens and space battles than character development and good drama, but that was then, and this is now. Looking back at it now I've changed by views. Why yes I realize that the first two seasons were weak (with some exceptions such as Measure of a Man) it did improve. And after the monumental "Best of Both Worlds" it was at full steam it dealt with such complex issues as the plight of war veterans (The Hunted), child abuse (Suddenly Human), political torture (Chain Of Command part 2), and feelings of self doubt and loyalty (Preemtive Strike) among other things. It had memorable performances from nearly all cast members. (Patrick Stewart, Brent Spiner, and Michael Dorn especially). It also feature memorable secondary characters such as Guinan, Barcaly, Cheif O'Brien, and Ensign Ro. It featured some of the best special effects on television. And all and all a great way to carry out the Star Trek legacy.
