Goal! (2005)
A football film for everyone
A film like this is always going to be in line for a lot of criticism. It's hard to make an original sports related film that isn't cliché, that pleases the sports fans without alienating everyone else.
This film has the additional problem of having to explain football (soccer?!) to Americans.
Given the task, this film manages it admirably. The story is genuinely moving with a powerful performance by the lead actor.
The film has a great feel of "britishness" about it. It's fairly authentic from the football point of view, and has plenty of story and character driven plot away from the pitch.
Ultimately, the on pitch "climax" is slightly predictable, but avoids over playing it. The temptation would be to have him score the winning goal in a cup final...they avoid this for a more realistic scenario.
Overall, this may not be sparklingly original, but it's well executed, authentic enough to be enjoyable to football fans, and accessible enough for their girlfriends to not mind being made to watch it.
Fire Birds (1990)
Not as bad as all that!
This film is nowhere near as bad as people on here claim.
Alright, it's not original, and it's not accurate, but it's a fun way to spend an evening.
Not to mention the AWESOME performance from Tommy Lee Jones. He delivers line after line of cocky deadpan humour to perfection in this film.
If you are a Tommy Lee Jones fan, this film is a MUST see, as it has him at his very best. If you loved lines like "dammit, we've only got an inch of topsoil left!" in under siege, or the "Alright people, listen up, we have a fugitive on the loose!" speech from The Fugitive, you are going to love some of his stuff in this film.
