The Quick and the Dead (1995)
A western that's sharp and satirical
"Quick And The Dead" takes old western movie formulas and characters (Stranger in seedy town, evil deputy or mayor, cocky gunslinger) and turns the tables on them and director Sam Raimi (Evil Dead) takes them to new levels makes them satirical and even more fun than usual.
Sharon Stone plays a quiet, attractive gunslinger whose out for revenge when she comes to stay in a small town. A local draw contest kicks off and almost everyone in town participates.A condemned preacher(Pre Gladiator Russell Crowe) who doesn't condone violence but the powerful, mean spirited mayor (Gene Hackman) forces him too. Also a young, over confident shootist(Leonardo DiCaprio)enters and takes an interest in the lady. Stone of course is in the contest but is really out to kill the mayor for reasons I won't spoil. For the rest I suggest you see the film.
"Quick And The Dead" is an interesting, involving and enjoyable western
with staple Sam Raimi touches. The style of the cinematography is outstanding, the performances exceptional and well played and Raimi takes old Western movie material and makes some new material out of it.
Camouflage (2001)
CAMOUFLAGE, Decent and entertaining
CAMOUFLAGE is a film noir spoof starring Lochlyn Munro as a failing stage actor who takes a job working with a crusty private investigator (Leslie Nielsen) This takes them to a seedy small town where a murder plot against a wealthy gravel pit owner is being planned.
Munro and Nielsen are surprisingly a good comic team in this decent, entertaining movie. A certain change of pace for Nielsen, escaping from his Frank Drebin role from The Naked Gun. Here he plays a foul mouthed, sharp P.I.
Also starring Patrick Warburton, Vanessa Angel and William Forsythe, CAMOUFLAGE is quite a good film. While most direct to video films are over looked, this one should be seen. A good cast and entertaining scenes make it exceptional.
Moving (1988)
Richard Pryor At His Best...MOVING is absolute hilarity!
A favorite classic of mine. Richard Pryor plays Arlo Pear, a automotive engineer with a some anger problems. After he is fired, a company designing a monorail hires him only the job is in Boise, Idaho. So Arlo's family take a horrendous move from New Jersey to Idaho. Along the way, they deal with lazy movers, weird homeowners and psychotic neighbors.
MOVING is absolute comic madness. Pryor is at his best here. A hidden comic gem with great performances.
The Art of War (2000)
A Skillful Thriller
Wesley Snipes plays Neil Shaw, a United Nations secret agent who is framed for killing the Chinese Ambassador. With the help of a woman who knows too much, Shaw has to question whose on his side and who his enemies are.
THE ART OF WAR is a skilful thriller with a good script and some very amazing action sequences. Director Christian Duguay has made a well crafted film. Good Montreal and New York locations. 9 out of 10.
The 6th Day (2000)
2 Arnolds For The Price Of One
"The 6th Day" is a bold mixture of action, science fiction and tongue & cheek humour. This time around, you get two Arnolds for the price of one.
He plays Adam Gibson, a helicopter pilot with a happy family in the future. Secret agents from Replacement Technologies begin to chase him once he realizes he has been illegally cloned.
You really have to see it to see the whole story, which is not simple at all. It's a bit of a cheesy film, nonetheless a really fun and interesting one. The inventions of the future are good to watch as well the always dependable Arnold.
Almost Famous (2000)
AMAZING!
"Almost Famous" is a moving film about a gifted young boy who tours as reporter with an upcoming band called "Stillwater" where he learns about life, love and rock 'n' roll.
Excellent film that combines great acting, intelligent writing and great music. The cast which includes,Patrick Fugit, Kate Hudson, Billy Crudup, Frances McDormand, Jason Lee and Phillip Seymour Hoffman, are very good. Writer/ director Cameron Crowe (Jerry Maguire) has made a wonderful film that may be the best film of 2000 and deserves Oscar attention. ****
