Jumping Ship (2001)
A Story of Survival
I found the movie to be well done. The actors, the Lawrence Brothers, have an excellent chemistry. In this sequel to "Horse Sense," Michael (Joey Lawrence) is still immature and in ways Tommy (Andrew Lawrence)is very mature. Michael is unemployed, using his parents' money to finance a trip to Australia with his cousin Tommy. He is over the budget, because he has invited a girl to meet him there from Hawaii. As a result, he will have to get a job when he returns home (he does not want to work for his dad as a file clerk, so he is job-shopping while on vacation. Looking for something easy). He is still very spoiled and has no clue why he should take responsibility for his actions. Things happen, his wallet is stolen, and he has chartered a second rate boat to go out on for a couple of days. Things go bad and you see where Michael is still immature, but Tommy handles things very well. Jake (Matthew Lawrence) is the captain of the boat, and he is somewhat of a snob, because he believes that both guys are wealthy. Once he discovers that Tommy knows what hard work is, the two begin to bond. The action continues when they run into Pirates. The movie is very well written and I look forward to another movie to continue the story of Michael and Tommy, with Jake included.
American Psycho (2000)
I was personally lost.
After just watching American Psycho I still do not understand what was suppose to be happening. Throughout the movie we see this man butcher people for very stupid reasons. (One man had better business cards.) Then, when you think he might have a hint of humanity and is turning himself in to his lawyer, the movie crumbles completely. I guess the just of the movie is that no matter how well you maintain your body, how high up the ladder you climb, you are not going to be the center of everyone's attention. I know that the title should have better warned me of this movie. Yet, I had read reviews praising how powerful the movie was, how excellent the acting of Christian Bale. I did not find either to be true. I believe any second rate actor could have fulfilled the requirements for this movie. Any 'psychotic killer' from a B rated slasher movie would have been just fine and probably cheaper for the budget. I was honestly bothered by this movie, not in the sense that it made me stop and think of how I would compare to this character. What made me stop and think was the fact that there is someone out there writing this material and they are who worry me.
