Shaft (2000)
A good movie - if it had been made for TV
For me, the old bad-attitude-cop-turned-investigator routine is getting boring. Shaft is just this, it doesn't provide any new twists to an old character. The movie could be good for TV not for theaters. However, it was entertaining.
Charlie's Angels (2000)
The worst movie I have seen in a long time
I'm usually very tolerant regarding action movies, where you don't expect to come out of the theater with the answers to life, but just expect to have fun and be amazed by special effects. But once in a while an action movie comes where, even though the effects are great, the plot is so bad that the movie just "sucks". And this is the case for Charlie's Angels. This Impossible-Mission-wannabe has an awful plot, stupid argument, bad jokes, predictable outcomes, etc. In short, the worst movie I have seen in a long time.
About the only two good things in the movie were the music (great sound track) and Cameron Diaz. The rest I could do without.
Gladiator (2000)
Definitely worth watching!
Gladiator is a movie which is definitely worth watching! It has stunning action sequences (such as the initial battle scene), incredible visual effects, and a gripping, interesting story. Crowe does an excellent job, but Phoenix, as Commodus, is the one who probably deserves the biggest applause. And the computer-generated reconstruction of the city of Rome at the peak of the Roman Empire's grandeur is simply breathtaking!
I would say this is one of the best movies ever... if it wasn't for the ending. The little speech that Lucilla gives after the final fight between Commodus and Maximus was the downpoint of the movie - it is so typical of big Hollywood studios to insert a final "message" by a character as a learning point of the movie. This movie does not need any messages or learning points: they are very evident. The final speech takes away all of the excitement from the recently-finished fight, and all grandeur from Crowe's character, since Lucilla steals the end. It was disappointing, and reminded me it's just another Hollywood movie, even though the rest is very good.
The Sixth Sense (1999)
Probably the best psychological thriller ever!
I saw this movie months after it had first come out in the US, and surprisingly nobody told me the end: I'm glad they didn't, because this has been the one movie which has kept me at the edge of my seat during the whole time. Bruce Willis does an excellent job in acting, but my applause definitely goes to young Haley Joel Osment.
I have now seen the movie about ten times, and even though I know how it is going to end, it still manages to give me goosebumps. A must see for everyone!
The Virgin Suicides (1999)
Don't expect a Francis Ford-Coppola film
Although the director's last name is the same as that of the famous director, do not expect this movie to be up to Francis Ford-Coppola's standards. I found the movie to be boring, without any depth or meaning. It's not funny and engaging as some of the reviews have pointed out, or does it provide any insights regarding suicide. If anything, it criticizes overprotective parents and their blindness to accept they were wrong in the way they treat their children.
Mission: Impossible II (2000)
Great movie, if you don't expect much...
To tell you the truth, I did not go to see this movie expecting to walk out of there with the answers to the world's mysteries. Nor did I expect it to be another Schindler's List or Shawshank Redemption. I expected this to be an action movie, with lots of stunts, exaggerated sequences, explosions and cool gadgets, and this is exactly what I got. Director John Woo did an excellent job, although I got a little tired of his trademark slow-motion takes. And the music was superb! Some of the stunts were hard to believe, and I definitely said: "yeah, right". But then, you I found myself thinking: "that was cool!". Just what I went to the theater for.
