Swordfish (2001)
Much, much better than the nit-picky reviews it's getting.
This is a very good movie with loads of action and reasonable mystique to keep you off balance. I'm tired of the reviewers never being happy, and they did this flick a great disservice - it's a MUCH better movie than they say. This is great entertainment and summer fun, and Travolta is cool as a cucumber and calculating as he can be. It has two sex scenarios that I think are not only raunchy but unnecessary - bad enough that my young teens will miss an otherwise fun movie because of these trashy throw-ins. If you like action-thrillers such as Mission Impossible and MI2, see this movie. Don't get all hung up in the likelihood of the action sequences taking place - all movies elaborate and exaggerate these scenes, don't they? If you're a critic - stay home. If you're looking for summer fun out - see this show.
Unbreakable (2000)
slow and drawn out; disjointed plot
A major disappointment - I love suspense/thriller/drama, but this one was for the birds. Every scene was drawn out to twice the length it should have been, never got to the point, and Willis was such a reluctant "hero" the other acting around him had to be contrived to try to make me care (i.e. son's fake tears, etc.) - ugh. This had all the makings of a great story and dropped the ball big time. I like both of these actors, but they missed it here....
The Perfect Storm (2000)
extremely well done
much, much better than I anticipated - effects and storm scenes outstanding, but I loved the glouchester "flavor" created about their lifestyle as fishermen. Understanding the character personalities and relating to their lifestyle added a rich quality to this movie - it was very, very good.
Mission: Impossible II (2000)
better than people are saying
This was a fun, high action summer movie. The critics beating this up are far too picky - the action was great, and with a little bit of "Hollywood" thrown in, but so what - it's a MOVIE! Plot good enough, and sometimes creative, but this was just a fun summer flick with much entertaining value.
Three Kings (1999)
better than you think
This movie sneaks up on you - I expected a "soldier renegade" type and got a political thinker back, along with a taste of the real world of Gulf war aftermath. Raised issues I've not heard or thought much about, but should be. As much cerebral input as there was action - a good mix for me. Much better than I expected.
