28 Days Later (2002)
Great idea, great atmosphere...
30 March 2004
I thoroughly enjoyed this film. Because Ireland is such close proximity to the UK, the idea of a virus infecting a whole country both disturbs and fascinates me.

28 days later has some excellent photography (just look at the deserted London streets) and some fine acting from the up and coming Cillian Murphy (who is Irish also!). I have just seen Dawn of the Dead, but it doesn't compare. This is your typical gore fest from Hollywood, but it doesn't have the same feel or look as 28 days later. Danny Boyle is a brilliant director and has done a great job.

I wouldn't mind seeing a sequel to this film. It would be nice to see how they cure the infected UK.

Anyway, have a look at 28 days later. It will make you think. 8/10

Fasten your seatbelts!
30 October 2001
This is a VERY fast movie! Put it this way, if you like cars at all, you will love this movie. Fast cars, fast women.... you've heard all the cliches, but they are all in this movie. The cars look excellent and they must have spent a small fortune for each take on the crashes!

Screen Two: The Snapper (1993)
Season 9, Episode 10
Me bollix!
30 October 2001
This is up there the all time great Irish comedy films. From beginning to end this is a riot of a film. It portrays the life of Sharon Curley played by Tina Kellegher. She becomes pregnant after a night on the booze and realises eventually, that the father is the local U-12 soccer coach, who just happens to be older than her father. The gossips soon get the news around and Sharon becomes the joke of the neighbourhood.

This really shows the ups and downs of single motherhood in early nineties Dublin. Colm Meaney is brilliant as Dessie Curley with some memorable quotes and one liners. Also look out for Brendan Gleeson as Lester. Well worth a look.

Quantum Leap (1989–1993)
Excellent time travel series
24 July 2001
Warning: Spoilers
I am a big fan of Quantum Leap. I used to watch it when it came out first, without fail every Monday night. I loved the fact that Sam (Scott Bakula) could leap from one body to another and in any time, but only within his own lifetime.

Dean Stockwell who played Al was great as Sam's link to 1995. Unfortunately Sam doesn't make it back to 1995 and the ending of the series left me wondering what would become of Dr. Sam Beckett.

LISTEN UP HOLLYWOOD!!! This would make a great movie, as this series had and still has a lot of fans out there!

9/10.

More of the same...
23 July 2001
I was curious to see what new "storylines" they would use in this the third outing of Dr. Grant and co. It was predictable drivel with the usual chase scenes and canon fodder being eaten by T-Rex etc...

Have you heard all this before? Thought so!

6/10 for effects

Good action, but a bit far fetched
23 July 2001
I was really looking forward to this movie. The action was a little far fetched and the story was the same. Angelina Jolie looks good and there probably will be a sequel or two to follow.

Good fight scene in the opening shots with the robot.

7/10

deadly!

This is one of the all time great music/Irish films. Alan Parker directs all these musicians brilliantly, and that's what they are.... musicians who act and not the other way around! That's what makes The Commitments so genuine. Andrew Strong has an excellent voice and the rest of the band, Joey the Lips etc., give some great one liners, for example, Joey "Sure we could have made albums and toured and all that other stuff, but this way it's poetry".

I hear they are making a sequel soon, which I am looking forward to. Check out the original as I doubt that this can be topped. Excellent viewing.

Oh mercy!
14 December 2000
This is a good adaptation of the classic seventies TV series. Unlike the Avengers efforts! See my review! Drew Barrymore, Lucy Liu and Cameron Diaz play the Angels and Bill Murray is hilariously funny Bosley. I think that Murray stole the show actually as his comedic interludes are a breath of fresh air in an otherwise mediocre film. Sure there's the three women who look very well and the fight scenes are pretty good also, if unbelievable at times!

If you want to see a film that won't challenge the mind, go and see this. It's a pleasant way to pass a few hours in the cinema.

Dinosaur (2000)
Dinotastic!
14 December 2000
Walt Disney have made some classics in their time, and I'm sure that this one will follow it's predecessors. First of all, this is not a kids' movie. There are some nasty fight scenes between dinosaurs and even though it's animated, it's seems very real. Secondly, the animation is amazing. The backdrops are a mixture of reality and animation which is combined to make a very real experience for everyone in the cinema.

I enjoyed this, even though I wouldn't go to a lot of animated movies. I would recommend this even if it's only for the animation.

One hell of a thriller!
23 November 2000
This is one of the best movies I've seen this year. Harrison Ford plays the perfect husband, or so it seems, and Michelle Pfeiffer is the perfect wife. This all changes however, when she starts to experience strange goings on in their house. Their are some great twists in the storyline which will literally keep you on the edge of your seat.

This is a good role for Ford as we see that he can also play the villain as well as the hero. 9 out of 10. Go and see this now!

Billy Elliot (2000)
Touching story
2 October 2000
This is one of the better films of 2000 so far. It has an excellent story which tells the story of Billy Elliott (funnily enough) who wants to be a ballet dancer more than anything. The story is set against the Miners' strike of the early 1980's and Billy's family struggle to get money together to send him to the Royal Ballet School in London.

Like most lads, I thought that it might be a little "female" for want of a better word, however, this is an excellent film that will make the hardest of lads well up just a bit. The scene where Billy's father nearly goes back to work over the picket line is especially poignant.

Go and see this today. You won't be disappointed.

Billy boots style film
2 October 2000
This is your typical shy kid turns hero film. Jimmy is the shy Manchester teenager who is bullied by the bigger lads. Robert Carlisle is the school soccer teams' coach who, just like Jimmy, is bullied around.

Jimmy is a great player on his own, but when anyone is watching he "caks it" as he says himself. One day before a match his boots are thrown away by the bullies and he remembers a pair of boots an old lady gave him the night before. These boots belonged to a Man. City player, Robbie Brewer and Jimmy believes them to be magic as he starts scoring goals galore and cannot make a mistake. He soon learns however that the magic is not in the boots, but in his feet.

Entertaining story for football lovers. Carlisle is believable as the bullied coach.

Hollow Man (2000)
Now you see him....
2 October 2000
Excellent special effects in this movie. Paul Verhoeven uses this technology brilliantly also. Kevin Bacon plays Sebastian Caine who volunteers, against the wishes of the government, to become the first human to try the invisibility serum that they have created.

Run of the mill story.... doctor invents invisibility, doctor takes drug, can't change back, goes insane. That's about it really.

This is worth going to see just for the effects... that's all.

Father Ted (1995–1998)
Drink, Girls, Arse, Feck!
2 October 2000
This is one of the best things to come out of Ireland since U2. Dermot Morgan plays Fr. Ted Crilly, a priest on Craggy Island which is supposedly off the west coast of Ireland somewhere. However, Ardal O'Hanlon who plays Fr. Dougal Mc Guire and Frank Kelly who plays Fr. Jack Hackett, steal all the shows as far as I'm concerned.

Graham Norton appears frequently throughout the series as Fr. Noel Furlong. He is very funny and my favourite episode of the series is Hell. This is where we meet Fr. Furlong for the first time. Ted goes on holidays to a caravan and he is already there with some youngsters from a youth club.

Some great one liners that will remain in the Irish psyche for a long time to come. "Drink, girls, arse, feck", the immortal words of Fr. Jack for example. You are missing out if you haven't seen this series. Rent it out today or buy it. It is definitely worth buying the series on tape. Feckin brilliant.

The Simpsons (1989– )
The best animated series there will ever be.... ever
2 October 2000
Lots of words come to mind to describe The Simpsons. Brilliant, hilarious, topical, dramatic, ridiculous, excellent writing. These are just some of the ways I can describe this series. I think that I have forgotten that these characters are just animated because they are so real. Most times when I'm talking with friends, the conversation will be about The Simpsons. Some of the dialogue eg. D'oh(Homer), Ha ha(Nelson) etc. has made it's way into everyday conversation also.

I think that Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, Maggie, Ned, Maude and everyone else in Springfield have become a part of everyones' lives. Nothing else comes close to The Simpsons.

Star Trek: Voyager (1995–2001)
Logically, the best Star Trek series
21 September 2000
I remember when Voyager started on TV. I liked the idea of a starship being stranded in the Delta Quadrant, 75 years away from Federation space, trying to find a way home. Kate Mulgrew plays Captain Catherine Janeway, who being the first female captain in the Star Trek series, had a lot to live up to. She has progressed through the series to become as good, if not better, than the previous captains.

The other characters are very well acted also. It was interesting to see Jeri Ryan introduced as Seven of Nine, as the Borg have always been the Federation's mortal enemy. I was sad to hear that the next series of episodes (Series 7) will be the last. Let's hope that there's a good ending. Future incarnations will have a lot to live up to. Gene Roddenberry would be proud of this. Here's to Voyager! Excellent viewing.

Philadelphia (1993)
One of the great modern movies
21 September 2000
First of all, Tom Hanks thoroughly deserves his first Oscar as Best Actor for this movie. He plays Andrew Beckett, a high powered lawyer, who contracts AIDS. He is fired from his job and takes his case to Denzel Washington, who plays Joe Miller, a homophobic lawyer.

Washington's character becomes closer to Hank's character as the movie progresses however, and there are some good moments in the courtroom.

This is a highly enjoyable movie and I would recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it yet. 9 out of 10.

Kiss me I'm Irish!
18 September 2000
This film should not be viewed by Irish people. It portrays them as thick, ignorant people who couldn't catch a cold. Basically it's about a bunch of lads in County Donegal who want to find some women, so they advertise in the Miami Herald for American women "to share in the outdoor life.... Indoor facilities also available".

Just about sat through it in the cinema. It's Ok but that's all the praise I'm giving it. Good luck to yis.

Scary Movie (2000)
Whassssssuuuuup!
18 September 2000
This is a great laugh. A great send up of all the last few years' horror movies. Scream, Sixth sense, The Matrix, I know what you did last summer, and more get the Wayans treatment as a bunch of kids go through the motions of getting in totally ridiculous horror scenes. It does make you think how stupid people are in horror movies. For example the boy and girl making out and the boyfriend hears a noise in the bushes. He goes to see what it is and never comes back! How many times have you seen this in movies before????

Anyway unlike the caption for the movie "No mercy. No shame. No sequel.", there is a sequel in production. It should be more of the same which is good, because this is a really good laugh. Check it out today! 9 out of 10.

Oh my God!
18 September 2000
This is a nice film. I can't believe I said nice! Anyway, this is not all that bad. Norton shows he can direct here as well as act. It's a world away from Fight Club. He plays a Fr. Brian Finn, an Irish priest (how stereotypical!) who along with Ben Stiller, who plays Rabbi Jake Schram, meet their childhood sweetheart/friend after 16 years. Both of them are in love with Anna, played by Jenna Elfman (Dharma and Greg).

There are some funny scenes in the film especially the one where Ed Norton does an impression of Rain Man.

I won't spoil the ending for you, but it's a happy one... Are you surprised? I didn't think so.

Shaft (2000)
What's my name?
18 September 2000
This is just a lot of hype as far as I'm concerned. The preview (trailer) for the movie is better than the actual story. Samuel L Jackson plays John Shaft who becomes obsessed with capturing a racist killer played by Christian Bale (who was seen in American Psycho). There's a lot of shooting and stuff which is fine if you like that sort of thing.... and I do! This film, however, just doesn't deliver. It looks a lot like a James Bond movie from the start sequence of cast etc.

This will entertain you, but it's nothing to write home about. 6 out of 10.

Twister (I) (1996)
Watch out for the cow!
24 August 2000
I was left gobsmacked after this film. The special effects are excellent and the story, although thin, is easy to follow. I think that the studio just wanted to show what they could do with the technology at the time and forgot about the characters just a little bit.

Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt are convincing in their roles as tornado chasers. There's a good scene when Cary Elwes gets sucked up into a twister after trying to get there first. An equally good scene is when a cow flies by the truck after being sucked up in a twister.

Overall the film will be remembered for it's ground breaking effects and that's it really. Must be seen on the big screen for the full effect.

Friends (1994–2004)
Could this....BEEE any better?
23 August 2000
I think that Friends is the best sitcom to come out of the states since Cheers. The characters are excellent and I have to say that my favourite is Chandler (Matthew Perry). He comes up with some great punchlines and I think that his wit is what keeps some of the less exciting episodes going. Everyone plays their respective roles well.

Jennifer Aniston plays Rachel who at the beginning is seen as a spoiled rich kid. She eventually changes though, and is now part of the working world. Courtney Cox plays Monica, who sometimes gets on my nerves and is my least favourite character. She is obsessed with being neat and tidy and sometimes this is really annoying. I guess that means she plays the part very well. Phoebe is played by Lisa Kudrow and she is definitely my next favourite. She is so unpredictable and next to Chandler, she comes up with the most funny and wacky lines. Her song "Smelly cat" is one of those songs that just keeps going around inside your head!

Ross, played by David Schwimmer, is the shy doctor and is Monica's brother. He can have his moments but mostly he just plays off the other characters. Joey, played by Matt LeBlanc, is the next character that I like the most. Joey and Chandler are the funniest duo in sitcom today, I can safely say. When Chandler eventually moved in Monica, the plot lost some of the funnier moments, but thanks to some clever writing, not that much. My favourite episode has to be "The one with the Prom video". This shows how Ross wanted to bring Rachel to the prom when her date didn't show. Rachel sees this video and she and Ross finally get together.

Friends is definitely a must see and even for people who don't follow the story every week, it is a good watch. Maybe that's the reason I have EVERY episode on tape!

Frequency (2000)
A great all round movie
21 August 2000
I was really surprised that this film was so good. I liked the idea from the film poster which drew me to watch this film. Dennis Quaid plays Frank Sullivan, a firefighter whose son John finds his old HAM radio 30 years into the future. Due to some solar interference, Frank from 1969 can talk to John in 1999.

There is some really good stories to follow and some really good time paradoxes that you have to pay attention for. Myself being a fan of time travel films, this really appealed to me. I will probably buy this when it comes out on VHS or if I ever get a DVD player! Anyway this is excellent watching.... check it out today!

The ultimate slapstick comedy
21 August 2000
I must have seen this film about 30 times. I know it's immature toilet humour, but what the hell, if you can't laugh at this, you won't laugh at all. Steve Guttenberg plays Mahoney, just one of a group of cadets who joins the police force after the mayor of the city declares that everyone can join regardless of height or weight. This was the start of a series of 7 films including this one. The rest of the Police Academy films were not as good as the original.... but then what sequels are (Back to the future 2 as an exception). If you haven't seen this check it out for some good laughs.
