The Trip (2002)
A smart and witty but bittersweet tug at the heart
The director and cast of "The Trip" deliver a powerful emotional love story about a pair of unlikely partners. In spite of the ups and downs of the relationship, both the protagonists and an excellent supporting cast deliver great comic relief. The backdrop for this love story is the developing gay rights movement, beginning in 1973; however, almost anyone with a heart should be touched by this film.
All Over the Guy (2001)
Touched my ticklebone and my heart.
"All Over the Guy" is a smart romantic comedy about two people who are all wrong for each other. Their flawed personalities provide both the dramatic conflict for the story and something to give weight to an otherwise lighthearted vehicle for witty repartee. The fact that the opposite numbers are both men is almost incidental, but the movie takes advantage of the gay angle to sharpen the comic edge. Especially funny and endearing is the relationship between one of the gay protagonists and his straight but askew roommate.
The one sex scene is not graphic; however, some heterosexuals may be uncomfortable with the man-on-man displays of affection.
The movie was smartly written, brimming over with bring-down-the-house laugh lines, heartwarming without getting anywhere near sentimentality. A great date flick if one is gay--maybe even if not.
Punks (2000)
Impressive debut for young director
The movie is a smart and funny view of a set of gay friends, looking at both the cynical and old-fashioned romantic sides of life. It has much to say about what constitutes friendship and family. It is one of the first, if not the first, movie to explore gay relationships almost entirely within the African-American community (there is one Hispanic in the group of close-knit friends). While the movie will be of special interest to Blacks, I as a white man enjoyed it immensely.
