Uncle Silas (1947)
Very good thriller
The thing that I like about Uncle Silas a.k.a. The Inheritance is that it is not your average thriller. The suspense is built slowly as we see things that affect the life of the heroine, but she is not aware of them yet. The movie builds up more and more and it becomes an exciting suspense movie that packs a punch even for its time. Jean Simmons is practically a child in this movie, she was so young and beautiful as always. Great acting and gloomy characters make this a fun movie to watch on a stormy night. Lovers of old Gothic tales and suspense movies will not be disappointed.
Vertical Limit (2000)
Intense
The only problem I have with the movie is that the trailer showed every stunt of the movie. Other than that I had a great time. What is it these days where everybody needs to be so cerebrally challenged? Doesn't anyone want to be entertained anymore? No it was not the most educated script I've ever heard but then again I'm not sure there are too many mountain climbers who use the proper vernacular, especially in do or die situations. Geez, sit back and if you like action movies and want to see special effects, then watch Vertical Limit. It's fun, fast and intense and I enjoyed it. Just have fun with it.
Move Over, Darling (1963)
Doris Day lovers will love this one!
No, it's not the most hilarious movie you've ever seen. But there is something magical about Move Over, Darling. No one could ever get mad like Doris Day and boy does she shine in this movie as usual. It's a fun film that anyone can enjoy if they don't think too hard and just sit back and relax. The added bonus is seeing James Garner flashing that million dollar smile and of course, Thelma Ritter who was always a riot in any movie she was in. Doris Day lovers need to add this to their collection.
Saraband for Dead Lovers (1948)
Beautiful love story
An enchanting tale of political marriages and schemes for prestige all at the expense of innocent people. It's a disturbing tale especially when you realize how many women in history must have felt as repressed and lonely as our heroine Sophie Dorothea. But it is a beautiful story of a little stolen happiness. Stewart Granger of course is always dashing in a costume drama. I recommend it for all the lovers of romantic tragedy.
The Stranglers of Bombay (1959)
Tense and gripping 60's flick
Great directing enhance this tense film about a religious cult who go around murdering and stealing just for the sheer pleasure of it. Even for our times it is still an interesting and gripping horror film. Guy Rolfe (as tall as ever) did a remarkable job of the dedicated soldier who no one will listen too. Lots of fun.
The Perfect Storm (2000)
Awesome touching and action packed drama
I was not disappointed as I thought I would be seeing anything with George Clooney in it. This was a wonderful movie. I gave it an 8 out of 10 only because like all action movies, they start out slow to give some depth to their characters since they will be focusing on special effects and suspense for the remainder of the movie. However once the movie got cooking, it didn't stop and it wasn't an empty special effects movie with no plot like Twister or Mission Impossible 2. Of course it was based on a true story but the characters made you feel for them and their lot in life and it truly was a movie that rocked. By all means go see it and enjoy.
Mission: Impossible II (2000)
I wanted to die!!! (Spoilers)
Yes I sat in the movie theater and after the first 20 minutes and already having seen so many slow motion sequences I just wanted to die. And what is so impossible about this mission anyway? The thing that really bothered me is with everything these people can do you would think they could come up with something more clever than having this woman go back to her ex-boyfriend. That's why it's called Mission Impossible. It's not supposed to be simple but that's not what they did. Instead of coming up with a super suspense action movie with a "clever" plot line we are reduced to seeing the rock and roll tidbit of her walking along the dock to her ex-boyfriend in slow motion and then if that wasn't painful enough we must then watch a sequence where he grabs the scarf as it goes flying in the wind as if it was such a powerful scene. Agony!!!!! It's a bad sign when you're hoping that the girl WILL kill herself in the end just because she's been so annoying throughout the whole film as a woman who started out with promise and ended up being the wimp needing the man to save her. Rubbish. I hope no one decides to come out with a third one. I don't think I could take another movie with MORE slow motion sequences.
Mr. Sardonicus (1961)
Fun B Movie
This is such a fun movie for its time. You have a truly interesting evil character Sardonicus played by the handsome and extremely tall actor Guy Rolfe. And of course a beautiful girl and a hero and another nemesis. The plot is simple, the execution easy. Of course there are some things that aren't quite explained to the viewer's satisfaction but if you're in the mood for a fun 60's B movie or you're into the Gothic genre or if you prefer the evil guy over the hero, this is the movie for you. I don't know about anybody else but I certainly would not have complained about being married to Sardonicus (as long as he didn't remove the mask prematurely.) Just lots of fun.
Duel of Hearts (1991)
Great movie!
You know it's a good movie when your husband pretends to be painting behind you but keeps asking you every five minutes, what happened? What did she say? Turn it up I can't hear it. This is definitely a wonderful romantic mystery and I recommend it to anyone who loves period movies with independent capable beautiful women as well as men in knee high boots. Wonderful movie.
Lace (1984)
Good jive soap opera for a boring day
I agree with others that the movie did run for a long time but hey, when you have nothing to do on a rainy day or a slow day it is actually quite enjoyable. My biggest problem was with Phoebe Cates' acting. The accent was a little much and besides, in Lace II didn't her accent like, not exist anymore? Of course that's a whole different comment for that movie. Either way I enjoyed watching the three girls lives form with their romances and careers more so than I did with Lily's life. You could have skipped on that part altogether. Lily was abandoned, grows up and wants to know who her mother is. Simple. End there. Either way it's fun to watch if you have nothing else to do and some parts will have you interested.
