Lektionen in Finsternis (1992)
Like a nightmare realized
Lessons of darkness is one of the most captivating, hypnotic experiences I have ever witnessed. I felt like I was in a strange nightmare and in an alien world. The film is almost purely visual; it is breathtakingly shot. It feels more like science fiction than most sci-fi films ever made. Absolutely haunting.
King Lear (1987)
A pretentionfest well worth the viewing
The first time I saw this, I really disliked it. Even compared to Godard's other ramblings of the 70's, it was still a little too disparate. But the second time gelled this movie for me and now I truly love this film. It's a wonderful brainstorm about the nature of film and the inherent capacity of art to reform itself. In other words, everything that's being said or will be said has already been said; sounds bleak at first, but it's actually comforting, because then art becomes truly universal and languageless.
Nostalghia (1983)
At 1a.m., it all made sense
At one in the morning, I threw in Nostalghia and let myself become inundated with sparseness and visual poetry. People describe this film as poetic; I 'd go further and say its like music too. I sometimes put it on and just do my things, and come back to it. It's a work of immense beauty and transcends normal movie viewing practices. Try it one day and put it on late at night, with a glass of beer. You'll see what I mean.
