Vanilla Sky (2001)
pretentious gimmick
I have seen a lot of comments about how confusing this movie was. I think that is about all this movie was. Twists and turns and confusion were substituted for a plot. This movie was a Matrix without the action, a Fight Club without a point. When you boil it down, the point of this movie seemed to be confined to sub-zero human preservation. An elementary thought piece at best, a gimmick at worst, and a sci-fi channel thriller the reality.
The Rapture (1991)
Born again? More like born yesterday...
What if this "what if" movie was well written, well acted, well directed? This film looked like it was slapped together in about 5 days. It provided no new insight into religion or existence, and instead played out like a sunday school class, providing aimless answers to childish questions. Some of the more shocking and surprising moments in the film seemed like the didnt belong, just tossed in to give this movie some sort of legitimacy. A better film would have given some depth to the characters, rather than just having merely walking, talking stereotypes.
Forces of Nature (1999)
almost works (SPOILERS)
I agree that the acting by Affleck and Bullock is below average, especially Affleck, at least Sandra Bullock is good at what she always does. I definitely agree that the supporting cast is quite good (I love Maura Tierney, and Steve Zahn is hilarious--"They are just travel partners! And she's ugly!") I think the biggest mistake the movie made was giving Sandra Bullock a life. It could have been much more intriguing had she been only a "Force of Nature" and we didn't have to deal with the pointless scenes involving her husband and child. The scene towards the end with Affleck and Tierney at the wedding was absolutely wonderful, and should have been the end. Tierney does a tremendous job of showing exactly why Ben was in love with her. Her quick wit and pouty face, along with that low voice are absolutely irresistable. See this movie for the visual effects and for Tierney.
Swingers (1996)
Don't we all want to be Trent?
The first time I watched this movie we turned it off after the scene where Mikey's answering machine started talking back to him. At the pleading of my friend (a girl none the less) we took a second look. As the movie went on, our laughs got bigger and bigger. The great part of this film is how well it captures each character and makes you feel almost as if you are part of the group. Sitting around playing sega, early mornings in the all night diner, 5 separate cars to the party, the little subtleties of a group of bachelors to which we can all relate. Vince Vaughn does an excellent job as the smooth talking player of the bunch, but the character I most relate to would have to be Mikey. Jon Favreau does a great job playing, as far as I can tell, himself. You can see that his heart is just a little too big to be a player like Trent, but his frustration in not being able to let go of his ex-girlfriend and sweet talk the ladies is painfully evident, especially in one scene where about everyone in the room started yelling at the TV, one of my friends hiding his eyes. As the film resolves itself, we all cheered for Mikey because you know what? We've all been there. This is a movie you could watch every night for a week, perfect for the summer.
Angel Eyes (2001)
If you are a regular Lifetime channel viewer, You might like this movie.
If this movie was the only thing on TV I wouldn't watch it. Pay movie theater price for it? I want my money back. Bad ass female police officer with abusive father falls in love with mysterious heroic stranger. What a thriller. Was this movie about Jennifer Lopez's character or about the recovering accident victim? I kept thinking "Catch" was going to be a serial killer or something of that sort. Unfortunately, we had to be dragged down this melodramatic movie like a bad soap opera. This movie should have been called "Touched by an Angel," not Angel Eyes.
Heartbreakers (2001)
Saw it coming....
This movie was so predictable that you could literally call out each scene before it even happened. Add to that a horrible acting job by Jennifer Love Hewitt, and this movie was just a big mess.
Now seeing that this movie was a silly comedy, I understand that love is not a central theme, but merely an impetus to push the movie along (but not nearly fast enough). That being said, the romantic portion of this movie was completely unbelievable and ridiculous, and contained the least amount of originality I have seen in a long time (Chris Lee likes to look at stars in his spare time?). Add to that Hewitt, and a horrible script for Chris Lee, who I usually like, and it was literally unbearable.
Maybe I am being a little critical because I did not have high expectations for this movie in the first place, but the movie did nothing to change my mood. Ray Liotta's character almost worked on a couple occasions, but not quite. If you want to see a funny movie about con-artists, see Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. If you want to see cleavage, see this movie.
Take cleavage away from Jennifer Love Hewitt, do we even know her name?
