Air Force One (1997)
Why Did They Like It?
I love Harrison Ford movies, but this one wasn't particularly good. Basically, it's another one of those typical action movies, but in this one, the President is Rambo.
Sure, he gets emotional when his family is in danger, and sure he out thinks the bad guys more than he out powers them. But this movie is just a rehashing of other, better action movies, and the conclusion is pretty lame. Also, the special effects are terrible (The planes look like plastic models).
Finally, the supporting cast is OK, but not spectacular. Glen close looked like she didn't even believe herself spouting out lines like "Your president just gave you an order!" And I love Gary Oldman, but in this movie he's confusingly lame.
Diamonds (1999)
Great Movie!
If you and your special one want to sit down on the couch and watch a movie just for the hell of it, pull up the popcorn and watch this one! All the acting is great, and the story-line is more meaningful than most of the stuff that comes out of Hollywood! It's nice to see that stuff like this is getting made. Kirk Douglas is an incredible actor, and even with the stroke, he works out nicely in his role.
The Perfect Storm (2000)
At last, a worthwhile summer film!
Although the effects are what brought me into the theater, the story was top-notch. Also, the acting was very, very good. It is nice to see that Hollywood can make a summer film that has some value.
I will definitely own this movie when it comes out!
Final Voyage (1999)
Shame on Artisan Entertainment
What Artisan has done here is try to recycle the film Juggernaut. In doing so, they fail miserably. The film is terrible and the acting is worse. The entire 'starring' cast should be banned from Hollywood for several years just for agreeing to perpetrate this piece of trash. Also, the director should be run out of town on a rail for ruining what was a perfectly good movie from the '70s.
But most of all, the people at Artisan should be ashamed of themselves for agreeing to fund such a terrible project.
Mission: Impossible II (2000)
What a Terrible Mission!
I really don't know why so many people like this film. The plot is tired, the love story is poorly executed, and, aside from several scenes involving cars which whirl through the air, the action has been done before. In fact, Face/Off had much of the same look and feel as this movie (Thank you Mr. Woo), but this movie was not nearly as good.
If you have not yet seen this movie, expect to be sitting through boring visual scenes designed to enhance the love story, and long, pointless, boring shots of Tom Cruise's face. Other than that, the action is allrght, but it's insulting to those of us who know how to ride motorcycles.
All in all, I didn't like the movie much because it wasn't worth $9 to see something I have seen before.
P.S. Note to Mike Meyers - Austin Powers 3 must be directed by John Woo!!
The Hurricane (1999)
Great Movie
This is one of the great films of 1999, and it is really too bad that it wasn't nominated for an academy award. The Hurricane was much better than the Green Mile or The Insider. I guess Hollywood just doesn't care about quality.
Captive (1998)
Pretty bad stuff
This started out as another one of those weird movies about a damsel in distress. It is very similar to Scissors with Sharon Stone. In fact, it's almost identical.
Nevertheless, the story is too long, you don't really care about the main character, and the ending is so formulaic, you can see it coming from the opening credits.
Too bad, because Eleniak is a good actress.
Scream 3 (2000)
Where did all of the violence go??
In the last two movies, those of us who like cartoonish violence were treated to some great scenes of violence. Who can forget Drew Barrymore's steaming intestines, or the expression on Jada Pinket's face when she got stabbed. In this movie, however, all the violence seems to have disappeared. Why?
Sure, characters got killed, and sure there was blood. However, there's more blood and gore on my TV every Thursday when I watch ER. If anyone from the movie ever gets a chance to read this, please note that we horror movie fans like our violence in big, fat ladles full of gore. If there's pressure to reduce the violence in movies, then that pressure should not ruin horror movies forever, rather it should force parents and movie theatres to more carefully screen impressionable minds out of certain audiences.
In short, Scream 3 was OK, but it was disappointing because it lacked truly violent scenes. It was more like an episode of Matlock.
