Station Eleven (2021)
Even better than the book
I read the book a few years ago and loved it! When I heard that they were making an adaptation for TV, I was excited but also hesitant and fearful that it fail to live up to its origin material, as so many screen adaptations unfortunately do.
After the first few episodes, my impression was that it was ambitious and really good, but with its non-linear story line and large amount of characters it was perhaps too challenging for viewers who hadn't read the book. If you find yourself in this position, I'd advice you to stick with it.
The series changes some things, which works well, and more importantly adds a lot of material that in the book is left unexplored, which also works really well. The writers did an excellent job here. After reading the book, I was left wanting more. This TV-series, on the other hand, manages to leave the viewer perfectly satisfied in the end, with loose threads neatly tied up. One particular scene in the final episode left me in tears, which is rare.
I do think viewers who find it confusing in the beginning will be rewarded if follow along. It's a beautiful story of friendships, struggles and how life goes on despite it all.
My Little Eye (2002)
New on the outside, same old on the inside
Setting the plot in the house of an internet broadcast reality show adds some new and modern flavour to what would otherwise have been just a "seen it before"-movie. And allthough the reality show of it is nicely incorporated into the plot, it still basically a fairly standard horror movie set in an old creepy house in the middle of nowhere, and provoking only moderate terror in the viewer at that.
Oh, and some of the plot twists are fairly predictable, at least I saw them coming.
Orions belte (1985)
Great arctic thriller
A movie based in the arctic Svalbard Islands north of Norway, it's about three small-time crooks seeing something they shouldn't have seen. The movie's story is based on a book by norwegian bestselling author and political radicalist Jon Michelet.
By many consider considered one of the best norwegian movies ever, Orions Belte combines a captivating story, great dramaturgy, awesome cinematography and beautiful music to go with it.
Some would probably find the dialogue "theatrical" or affected, a common critique of norwegian films from this period, but it is probably only noticeable by norwegians, and not really that conspicuous. I think the actors, especially Helge Jordal in leading role, do a great job.
The scenery is just amazingly beautiful, with white icebergs and tall desolate mountain ranges, all very nicely photographed. And Geir Bøhren's synth score is very fitting to the mood of the film, and also beautiful in its own right.
All in all, a movie you absolutely should see if you get the chance.
28 Days Later... (2002)
Plot hole o rama
*** MINOR SPOILERS ***
This movie _could_ have been much better than it actually turned out to be. A story by acclaimed novelist Alex Garland, set in a postapocalyptic (disease) Britain, good cast and a successful director.
However, though the result is by no means a poor movie, 28 Days Later has a script that is way too flawed to not be irritated by. Watching this with a friend, we were continuously remarking "Why on earth are they doing that" and "why don't they just do something obvious. It also made me wonder why the writer nor director nor even actors had noticed the same things. Or if they had, why they chose not to make any changes. Also, the whole soldier-would-be-rapists crew thing is just not believable. This movie had the potential to say something about human reaction and conduct in such a situation, but wasted it with that whole plot twist.
In the end, if you like postapocalyptic stories, and can look the other way on all the annoyingly stupid moves by many of the characters and generally implausible turn of events, you should find this movie entertaining.
The Dream Catcher (1999)
The perfect roadmovie
A really touching character driven roadmovie, with excellent performances by the two main characters (especially the youngest one).
I can honestly say that this is one of my top five favourite movies. Too bad I only got the chance to see it once. If you get the chance, don't miss it! This movie will stay with you for days after seeing it. Nevermind all the meaningless hollywood flicks, THIS is what movies are all about.
Shooting Fish (1997)
It's all Beckinsale
I have seen this movie three times since its release, but if I'm to be honest the last two times were mostly because of miss Beckinsale. To quote Dylan in the movie: "I can see it now, she is a stunningly attractive woman."
The other actors make a good appearence as well, both Futterman as Dylan and Townsend as Jez are well casted, and they make well balanced duo. The movie is funny, though maybe not as laugh-out-loud-hillarious as a pure comedy would be, and allthough the plot is pretty crap (with some really far fetched sollutions), all in all it's a movie well worth seeing (unless you have a thing against pretty female faces...).
