Hard Rain (1998)
Terribly underrated action flick
I guess some people just have a hard time accepting Christian Slater as an action hero. I don't understand why; he's certainly not Arnold or Bruce or Jackie, but he does a credible job. Anyway, a strong script/director combination makes up for a lot... I was impressed with how many ways they could create tension with nothing scarier than a bunch of water.
Jawbreaker (1999)
Almost Heathers
This movie wanted to be "Heathers" so badly it could taste it. Unfortunately, without Christian Slater, it fell a bit short of that level. Still, good black comedies are hard to find, and Rose McGowan is nearly strong enough to carry the entire movie. Certainly this is worth a rental.
Ngo si seoi (1998)
Best Jackie Chan yet
I think this is arguably the best martial arts film ever, at least of those filmed in English. Certainly it's the best Jackie Chan so far; the fight scenes are longer but stay interesting much better, the humor doesn't seem forced (as in many of his filmed-in-English efforts), and the plot keeps moving (although it *is* thin in places... but hey, it's a martial arts flick, lighten up...)
Toy Story 2 (1999)
Wait for video
A pale reflection of the brilliance of the original. My rating of 7 would be overly generous if it didn't take into account the beautiful animation, and the cameo by the chess player from the Pixar short. This is the last we'll see of Toy Story in the theatre; from here on out it's DTV hell, a la The Little Toaster.
Proteus (1995)
Stupid Movie Night Wannabe
This movie has all the hallmarks of a *great* Stupid Sci-Fi Flick... stupid scientists, dumb hi-tech gadgets, shape-shifting aliens who seduce their prey, expository videos labeled "Watch Me"... the list goes on. Don't expect much from the plot or special effects... watch it for the cliches...
