The Sweetest Thing (2002)
There is a vacancy where my soul once resided
My friends and I rented this movie as a girls' night type film, hoping it would be a fun romantic comedy of sorts. We never could have expected the night of terror that was to unfold. I keep pondering over the fact that not only was this movie written at all, but that it was rewritten, and what we saw was a reworked version of something possibly even worse. This was a final draft. Someone spent a good part of their time reading this and thinking "This is of good quality." And that is why my faith in the human race has deteriorated after watching this waste of celluloid. Furthermore, it saddens me to think that the actresses featured here also read this script, and thought "Yes, I would like to be a part of this project."
I am trying to figure out the premise/message of this movie. Is it: "Look! boobies!"? Is it: "See? Girls have no redeeming values!"? Or maybe it's: "You don't have to have redeeming values if you have nice boobies."
Please don't see this movie. Please. I wish there was a way to give it a negative number out of 10 rating.
Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead (1990)
Brilliant Brilliant Brilliant
I'm 18 years old, I saw this movie for the first time last year in my English class after we studied Hamlet. I completely fell in love with it. Tom Stoppard is truly a genius of the written word; the verbal swordplay and impeccable repartee are unbelievable. The tennis match of questions. Wow. This movie had me and my English teacher laughing hysterically, while most of the rest of the class found it stupid and boring. Ah well, their loss. This movie isn't for everyone I suppose. But still definitely one of my favorites. Sheer brilliance.
Awakenings (1990)
Extraordinary Film
This is a stunningly beautiful and profoundly moving journey, and, amazingly, based on a true story. I never tire of watching this movie; it was one of my all-time favorites. DeNiro's performance totally blows me away every time. And Robin Williams is wonderful as Dr. Sayer. Even simply remembering the movie by reading others' reviews here is once again giving me chills and putting tears into my eyes. After seeing this movie I also became a huge fan of Dr. Oliver Sacks' writing and recommend it to anyone, especially those who enjoyed "Awakenings." His case studies are fascinating. An excellent movie. Do yourself a huge favour and see it.
Le Cinquième Élément (1997)
Oh, so this is what hell is like
Upon reading about 40 reviews of this movie here, I must say I am completely floored by how many people really loved it. The only reason I sat through the entire film was because I was watching it in a class and we were forced to. Visually interesting, I'll grant that, but painfully boring. I think this is quite possibly the worst movie I have ever seen.
The Great Muppet Caper (1981)
I love this movie!
My parents have informed me that I watched this movie just about every day when I was 3 years old. I'm now 18 and still watch it every now and again so I've probably viewed it upwards of 300 times; it's mahvelous, and Jim Henson was a genius.
One of the greatest parts about this movie is kids can enjoy it for the muppets, and then as they grow older catch on to more of the verbal humour, as I did. I appreciated the satires even more after watching "That's Entertainment" a few years back. Henson's parodies of some of the old MGM musicals are beyond brilliant. This movie is absolutely hilarious and will forever hold a special place in my heart.
