The Independent (2000)
So much potential...
A very funny film and showcase for Jerry Stiller. The highlight, though, is the myriad of crazy and very fun movies, shown in blurbs, that Stiller's Morty supposedly made over the years. These clips are what makes the movie. All the rest is mildly funny, but not nearly as clever. Janeane Garofalo is underused, as well.
Serendipity (2001)
Cute movie, but only because of the stellar cast...
I must admit that I love John Cusack, and therefore am a bit biased when it comes to his movies. This movie is nice and light, cute and romantic, and would be none of these things if Cusack and friend Jeremy Piven weren't a part of it. Piven and Cusack MAKE the film and are totally believable as life-long best friends who would do anything for each other. Kate Beckinsale is also good as the lost love interest to Cusack. The plot is extremely predictable and the movie moves along slowly. It is Piven's ad-libbing and hilarious character that keep it moving. Definitely a movie to see, if you like John Cusack, or are looking for a light-hearted treat.
Unbreakable (2000)
More elaborate and interesting in its storytelling than the Sixth Sense, this film is the smart person's movie this holiday season!
An amazing movie with another wonderful performance by Bruce Willis. But even better than Bruce Willis, this time, is the intricate direction and cinematography that sets this film apart from any other I have seen.
The whole movie casts a dark shadow around these characters until the end, when we realize why the darkness has enveloped them.
