Shiriusu no densetsu (1981)
Wonderful, but weird!
This film is pretty hard to find, but I was lucky enough to have my parents tape it for me when I was pretty young. The animation is beautiful and the story a familiar one, much like Romeo and Juliet (but with some major differences). The underwater world portrayed in the movie is a bit strange. It's the only ocean I've seen that has bats, clouds, and waterfalls!
Signs (2002)
See this movie--and then go hug your loved ones
It's been a long time, if ever, since a single movie gave me all the sensations of happiness, sorrow, fear and hope. I keep hearing disgruntled voices about "Signs" not living up to the standards of M. Night Shyamalan's earlier successes. However, I think that is simply from people trying to type-cast his films. **Possible spoiler ahead** The fact that the plot revolves more around the family's reaction to an alien invasion than the actual invasion seems to be the main cause for disappointment with this film. If you were expecting Mel to rip off his shirt and pick up the ol'shot gun to defend America amidst expensive explosions and high tech special effects than this movie will disappoint you. This was a space invader's movie that dealt with people, not aliens.
It was a refreshing way to look at sci-fi. From the inside. The inside of the hearts and minds of the characters who find out what is really important to them.
The Devil and Daniel Mouse (1978)
Funny! Especially for a child of the 80's
Cute songs, and an interesting story line. I remember this one from when I was little, and I loved watching the wolf, who is the Devil's helper but not heartless himself. Just be sure if you ever make a bargain with the Devil you read the fine print, because he certainly will!
