The Secret Garden (1993)
Breathtaking, Gripping and Beyond Expectation
I couldn't stop. At first I thought I was only going to view the first 10 minutes then hit the bed, but I simply couldn't stop. The screenplay is so perfectly done that there is actually not a boring moment, not at all. And those excellent children and the surprisingly adorable Martha! I've always loved the original book and the Broadway musical of Secret Garden and now I love this enchanting film even more! The seventy minutes went without feeling any of them, I even forgot to check on my sleeping baby as I usually would! The beauty of it is breathtaking, the plot and pace is gripping and the whole film is quite beyond expectation! It's better than the other film 'The Little Princess' as The Secret Garden seems to suit grown ups better! I'd very much love to see a musical film made out of it someday!
My Father the Hero (1994)
This American re-make is AWFUL~~Check the original!!
I'm very appalled by this American version of 'Mon Pere ce Hero', which is a beautifully made film, wonderfully acted as well. Why do they have to make a re-make? Is English-speaking audience not able to appreciate a lovely subtitled film as such? The remake is AWFUL. Wrong girl, wrong music, and Depardo's sense of humour is completely degraded in this film. A very lousy copycat. It's a total insult to the original one.
Jack & Sarah (1995)
If only they had handled Sarah properly
I've always had problems with how babies get handled in films such as "Three Men and a Baby" and this one. The story is believable but certainly not including the babysitting bit which is completely unthinkable and irresponsible. How could the father (Jack) ever leave his young baby to the new nanny ( Amy) who doesn't even know how to change nappies, let alone making bottles and preparing cereals? This kind of cinematic 'baby-abuse' has always bothered me. How could the grand-parents leave the vulnerable newborn lying nakedly( not even with a clean nappy on) beside a unconscious drunk man who has never been a father for one day? He could have accidentally turned over and smashed the baby or swept her off the bed. It's misleading and DANGEROUS. I'd have enjoyed watching Judi Dench and Ian McKellen more if I hadn't had to worry so much about the baby. Stop treating babies like lifeless properties!
You've Got Mail (1998)
Lovely Actors Lovely Scenes, Lousy Story Lousy Plot
Enchanting at the first sight, problematic at the second. To me it's just another fairly stupid Hollywood fairy tale.It would be more refreshing if it were 'Fox & Daughters' v.s. Tome Hank and if it were He who closed his tiny little shop and married the boss of a much bigger super store! The film is admittedly entertaining but inevitably stereotypical. It could have been more gender friendly instead of conveniently assigning women with personal/private/little and men with impersonal/public/ giant.
La vita è bella (1997)
I'd have felt different if I were not a mum
I was ten times touched by LIB than by Schindler's List. As I wasn't yet a mum back then. When everything looks like s**t, how will I be able to make my baby girl happy and protect her with all my effort? I was all tearful when I saw Guildo smuggling his son into the kids group so that Josche could have a decent meal...I told my husband after the film, 'don't you dare leave our kid alone in that cabinet just to look for me. Stay with her whatever happens, don't leave her alone. Never'. This might seem shallow that all I am talking about after watching the holocaust film is how I care about my child. But you know what I am talking about, right? Wonderful film.
