Pacific Rim (2013)
OMG I love this movie
I had a lot of fun at this movie. I think that the special effects were awesome and that the story line was good. Charlie Day was fabulous and hilarious and the other actors were pretty good. Thank you for bringing back the fun and memories of blockbuster monster movies like Godzilla and some of the old time greats!!! Fun for the entire family!! It's been along time since I have seen a movie that was not only visually striking but also made me feel like the admission price was well spent. I look forward to any sequels that this movie will spawn. Hopefully they will find a great storyline to continue the fun and bring another great movie full of fabulous special effects!! Highly recommend!!!
Battle: Los Angeles (2011)
Pleasantly surprised
I saw this movie today and was pleasantly surprised. At first I was afraid it might be like Skyline, but it held its own. The plot is good, the acting is good and the special effects are wonderful too. I think the aliens were believable and their searching and needing water reminded me of Signs, where the aliens there were afraid of water instead of needing water like this one. Aaron eckhart plans SSGT nantz who is struggling with the loss of life of his men from a tour in Iraq. He redeems himself as he fights the aliens, protects civilians and tries to save LA. I admire his courage and his leadership. The female air force tech Sergeant is also a great portrayal of a woman warrior.
Valkyrie (2008)
Surprisingly a great movie
I don't know where to begin. When I first heard the movie was coming out, I had a lot of interest in it, but as soon as I heard Tom Cruise was going to be headlining, I was less than enthralled. After seeing a trailer for it during one of the earlier movies this year, I was impressed with what I saw for the sneak peeks, and Tom Cruise seemed okay so far. I took my children (15, 18) to see it last night and we were pleasantly surprised at how good the movies really is. I was very impressed with the star studded ensemble, but especially with Bill Nighy..wonderful. Thomas Kretschmann was awesome too, as the Germany Army Major who is confused at whether or not all of the alerts are real or drills. The script is wonderful, the direction is great and the cinematography is superb. Any fan of WW2 history will surely love this movie.
The Painted Veil (2006)
A brilliant piece of cinema
Oh my! During one of my insomniac episodes, while perusing HBO in the middle of the night, I came across this movie, about half way into it. I have always loved Naomi Watts and was interested to see that she was sporting a brunette hair color. Anyway, a few minutes into the film, I realized it was a "period piece". After having seen atonement this year, I was prepared to jump into this movie even at the halfway mark. Having to go on the dialog to try to figure out why Ed Norton was so hateful to her, made me realize that I was going to have to see the film from the beginning. I decided to stick it out and the cinematography alone was worth watching a movie half way in. I was able to derive from comments that Kitty had been unfaithful, and that she was paying for it. I was able to watch the movie again later that day and was completely enraptured by the scenery, the story and the characters. The acting is superb, believable and the story is wonderfully scripted. I love the idea that even though they started out so sadly, that there was redemption and love in the end. I think this movie was highly overlooked in the awards arena.
Fred Claus (2007)
Vince Vaughn can't save it!
My daughter and I ended up walking out of this movie..granted I didn't see beyond the scene where Fred and Willy are in the bar saying good night to Charlene, but I couldn't take it anymore. Up to that point, the story line was dry, it didn't flow, often times I was completely confused as to what was trying to be conveyed to the audience. Paul Giamatti was lukewarm at best as Santa and Miranda RIchardson was talent wasted as Mrs. Claus. Even Kathy Bates was not funny! Vince Vaughn's character is a clone of the disgruntled, sarcastic guy that he has played in many of his past movies, and even his comedic take on the character couldn't save this movie. Little ones may enjoy the music, the pretty lights and the distraction of the elves and such, but there was no continuity in the story line and overall this was a disappointment.
Casino Royale (2006)
Horrible....no flow at all
When the movie first starts, you think that it is something of a terrorist plot with the code name of ellipse and the constant chase scene from one place to another. The stunt work is fabulous and I have to admit I have never seen anything quite like it, but then the story makes no sense. We are not told why he is after the frenchman to start with. We think we are following the plot at the airport when all of the sudden we are taken elsewhere to the casino with no apparent idea of why he is in this game. The frenchman loses all the money on the stock market on purpose?? and then he plays in a high stakes poker game. Also, the gianni character..mathis..he is completely out of place. We don't know what he is supposed to be doing. Also if the boy friend of vesper is being held for ransom, and she is a high level British government worker from the treasury representing the money factor, don't you think they would know about her background? She would have to have some type of security clearance and she already had access to the money so why would she go through the charade of having to play the part at the poker game. I was very disappointed and I have to say it was the worst bond film yet.
Saw III (2006)
missing pieces
On the whole, I enjoyed the movie, but there were certain things I did not understand and now may have to go back and rent 1 and 2 again to see what I missed. When Jigsaw is in and out of consciousness, he has visions of a blonde woman...who is this? Is this his wife? When he is saying, I love you...I love you...and he is directing this at Lynn the doctor, is Amanda jealous? What was in the envelop that Jigsaw gave Amanda? I thought maybe it was his will? In the end, did Jigsaw or Amanda kill Det. Matthews. The info on this saw 3 say that the guy who played the judge was also in the 2nd one...where? I don't understand what the guy with the chains had to do with it. I understand everyone else related to the killing of Jeff's son and his need for forgiveness/vengeance testing..but some of it I don't understand.
RocketMan (1997)
A wonderfully comedic movie
Considering a lot of the garbage that is out there for children, Rocketman is a fairly family friendly oriented movie. Apart from the flatulence gags, there really is no language, violence or undertones of sex involved. Fred Randall is a lovingly delightful clown who will keep you non stop laughing especially with his favorite line..."It wasn't me!".
I think that the actor to who plays Fred is wonderfully suited to the part and the rest of the cast is pretty good too, especially "Gordo" Fred's competition for the trip to mars. Unfortunately for Gordo, he ends up in stitches and bruises while competing with Fred for the spot on the mission. I also loved the interaction between the chimp, Ulysses and Fred. They are like Laurel and Hardy at times.
ALl in all a fantastic Friday night DVD with popcorn for the family.
Poseidon (2006)
Horrible Horrible Disappointment
The only thing I can say about this movie that was any good was the special effects. The acting was horrible, the storyline weak and full of holes and the continuity was bad.
I find it interesting that the start of the movie goes straight into the New Years Eve Party and we have no idea who the main characters are...such as small bits of information about their lives as told in the original and the made for TV miniseries. Then they go straight into the tsunami and then the escape. There was no mention of a rescue or about who might come rescue them. I also thought it was strange how easily they decided to "sacrifice" valentin the waiter..without any thought, emotion or remorse, yet cried uncontrollably when Elena drowned....
On the whole, I wasted my money on this film and will not bother to rent it when released on DVD. Do yourself a favor and if you MUST see it, then wait for the DVD.
The Benchwarmers (2006)
Absolutely hilarious
I laughed so hard at this movie that I thought at one time I was going to throw up. It was funny, and the characters were awesome. I think that Rob Schneider's wasn't all that funny but the others were hilarious, especially Howie, the agoraphobic who thinks the "sun is bad". I love the salad bowl mullet hair cuts of David spade and his brother, Howie. Jon Heder did a few things reminiscent of Napoleon Dynamite and that was a welcome treat. Also, Jon Lovitz was funny as the dork who grew up to be a BIll Gates style rich dude who has all the toys and the last laugh to those that teased him when he was younger. The other hysterical part is the little guy, Marcus Ellwood who plays the bullied little kid who as an adult lives in his mother's basement in a "peanut butter fortress" and casts spells on people. Let's also not forget the cameo of Reggie Jackson, who says he is going to train them like he learned....running, catching and hitting which equates to : ding dong ditch, playing hot potato with a real hot potato and taking mailboxes out with a baseball during drive by. At one point the opposing team tries to get an adult on their roster to play against the bench warmers and his ID constitutes a Polaroid picture taped to a piece of paper with green crayon written.."I am 12". I laughed so hard at this movie, I had tears in my eyes. While, not the best movie I have ever seen, it was definitely the funnest, and the most likable that I have seen in a long time.
The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)
I was highly disappointed
I was highly disappointed. I thought that this was going to going to be a funny movie, but I had a very hard time following the story line and the characters. I think Gene Hackman had a few good scenes, but the rest of the characters were very uninteresting and didn't integrate well together.
Fawlty Towers (1975)
funniest ever
I first saw Faulty Towers on pbs when I was a child. I own all the videos and after 25 years I still laugh. The physical comedy as well as the interaction between all the characters is priceless. I recall it was named one of the best tv shows ever. I concur!
The New Adventures of Pippi Longstocking (1988)
Good fun for kids
This movies is great fun for kids considering some of the garbage that is on tv these days. The kids love Pippi's outlook on life and her dream in believing that you can do what you set your heart on. She is a girl who believes in herself and looks for the good in others. Kids could do worse.
