Talking Head (1992)
This is where a lot started...
Weird, surreal, funny and at the same time creepy. Some may find it boring, but Talking Head provides lots of "brain food" about motion pictures in general, while retaining a surreal haze around itself.
Anime - and Oshii - fans will find lots of sequences that has been reused in later productions, like Avalon. And after watching this, some Hideaki Anno's Evangelion scenes suddenly doesn't seem that groundbreaking anymore.
If you are an anime fan and can tolerate a lot of weirdness, it's definitely a must. Just don't expect anything to make *real* sense.
Bloodsport (1988)
Still the Right Thing
OK, so Van Damme movies are cheesy. And yes, he is worst an actor as you can imagine. And yes, Joey Tribbiani looked more real as a corpse than Jean-Claude as an actor in that Friends episode. Still, JCVD's skill is as a fighter. And this, of all movies, is what fighting is all about. You fight? Then you will recognise your martial art - or style, for those practicing thai boxing, or drunken boxing, or street-fighting - you get the idea. Never has a fight out of kung-fu has been so good represented. 90 minutes of fighting. If you're looking for something else, stay real far. Else, this is The Movie.
Viol@ (1998)
Brilliant, not great
As much as I wanted to like this movie (Stefania Rocca is one of my favorite actresses) I could not get "complete satisfaction". The plot is well exploited, and not as foreseeable as other, similar, movies - the twist at the end, alas, is foreseeable.
The actors' performance is not bad at all, unfortunately the story is not completely up to the par. Not bad, but could be much better.
Gladiator (2000)
More realistic than I thought...
What can you expect from a movie like Gladiator? A great deal of eye-candy, the eternal fight between good and evil, some gruesome action and a fast pace.
Well, stand assured that they're all there (except maybe for the fast pace at times), along with some above-the-average acting. And before complaining about the end fighting sequence, keep in mind that emperor Commudus (obviously crazy at least as Nero) usually went fighting in the Colosseo against gladiators. The gladiators were obviously lethally wounded before the "match" to avoid problems to the emperor. Did Ridley Scott knew about it? I sure think so.
Overall a good movie. Yes, explicitly violent - but the Roman age was violent. Probably not suitable to children, but a good movie for any adult.
The Thirteenth Floor (1999)
Truth may not be what you think...
This movie has just one, big fault. It has come after Matrix. It has some really good, imaginative points, but if you have already seen the flick mentioned above, you'll probably be able to forecast the plot after only a few minutes. The thirteenth floor is worth seeing anyway, as the acting is pretty good and the plot still have a couple of nice twists. Most important, the non-sequiturs and logical incoherences typically found in such movies are kept to a minimum. If you appreciated sci-fi movies like Strange Days, Existenz and, again, Matrix, you'll surely like it.
Silent Fall (1994)
You can do much worse than watching this...
Okay, it will never make it into my list of masterpieces, maybe it won't even make it in the "really good movies", but stay assured you'll have a pretty good time watching this, provided that you accept the slaughtering of realism for the sake of a good-conceived story. Right, authistic people are not like Tim. And right, miss Tyler is much more beautiful than good-acting. But the story is interesting, entertaining at times, and thanks to its lack of realism in dealing with authism, can reach a "happy" ending without resorting to any Deus Ex Machina. And that, in today's US thrillers, is really a lot.
La gabbianella e il gatto (1998)
Some cartoonist at Disney should look and take notes...
...because it's a lot of time their million-dollar masterpieces do not > provide this kind of innocent fun, almost trading an entertaining story for > graphical impact. > > Astounding. A marvellous, poetic cartoon for both children and adults alike. > Graphically poor, almost childish, manages anyway to amuse and touch the > spectator's heart. Even if it was bad, it'd be worth seeing just for the > mice leader.
Train de vie (1998)
Bittersweet masterpiece
Great. Only this word can describe a masterpiece such as Train de vie... a fun yet respectful satyre of yiddish commonplaces, all with a plot that's nothing short of the deed of a genius. The grim ending is unavoidable for a matter of due respect to the "shoah" victims.
