One Man's Trash (2004)
Laugh-out-loud Hysterical
One of the funniest short films I've ever seen. Some people are addicted to buying and selling, others are obsessed, competitive lunatics when it comes to yard sales and garage sales in Los Angeles. Scanning the classifieds, staking out their targets and arriving early to get the best deals. Several characters are profiled throughout the film in interview-style footage. The performances are so genuine and convincing, for most of the film I could hardly believe this wasn't a real documentary. The comedic timing throughout is brilliant. It was chosen among the top ten submitted shorts and screened in 2004 at the Flickering Image Festival here in Los Angeles. I don't think this is yet released on DVD. If you're ever lucky enough to see One Man's Trash ... I guarantee you'll laugh your ass off!
Butch Camp (1996)
Some queens just want everything to be all wrapped up in one perfect movie: Get real.
Having been a big fan of the Giver-Goddess (Judy) for over a decade, I rented this flick the other day. True, the acting and the direction of the actors could've been a lot better. The film is loaded, purposefully, with innuendo, cliché and stereotype humor. I knew that when it all started! The characters are likeable and the writing is ripe with gay sarcasm and campiness. What I loved most of all is my being pleasantly surprised that this is actually, in the end, an adorable romantic comedy! Well worth viewing. A thoroughly enjoyable film. Some queens just want everything to be all wrapped up in one perfect movie: Get real.
Forgotten Silver (1995)
I was completely fooled.
Amazed throughout watching this film on TV. I thought I was discovering long lost history. So well done, authentic looking and convincing--I was completely pulled in.
Rent the video and show it to friends and family as a true documentary! It's wonderful to be fooled this way.
Oxygen (1999)
I really enjoyed this film
The acting performances were all-around excellent! Brody & Tierney's relationship is sexy, suspenseful, and compelling. These two actors communicated with their raw instinct, making this film interesting and worth watching.
The plot does have its typical Hollywood predictability at times but that is easily forgiven in light of the great performances.
Chocolat (2000)
To say that Lasse Hallstrom is a genius
To say that Lasse Hallstrom is a genius would be close to the truth. This film is brilliantly done! A delightfully magical story, well told through the eyes of a master director. Juliette Binoche is flawless. Dame Judy Dench continues to leave me in awe.
Sexy Beast (2000)
I enjoyed the intense drama, fast pace, and solid performances
I've just returned from a special screening of the film, with a Q&A afterward with Ben Kingsley. Particularly interesting of Ben's comments were that he didn't do any particular "research" for the role, but simply reached into the "basement" of the the dark side within himself, which we all in fact have.
The film's dramatic pacing and editing are impeccable. I echo much of the previous reviewer's comments. Kingsley is intense as Don. The comedy is evident, but not indicated. The performances are top notch throughout. Ian McShane is deadly. This is a formidable directorial debut.
Well done.
Cafe Americain (1993)
I loved this show!
The characters were each uniquely individual. The Parisian scenario enabled many different international types to interact in many highly comedic circumstances. Valerie Bertinelli's love for comedy drove this series from the start. Fabiana, the tempestuous Italiana and her perpetually jealous lover were hilarious. Marcel's on and off relationship with Holly (Valerie Bertinelli) set the stage for great interferences by Guest Star lovers. Peter Noah, the producer/creator was at his best here. NBC's short-sighted hasty cancellation, preceded by the usual "time-slot shuffle" left its audience confused and ultimately disappointed. Bring it back on cable, at least, so those episodes can live again!
Night Eyes Three (1993)
I worked on this film...
back when I didn't have an agent and I needed the money. I was a glorified extra, playing the "sound man." This film is a terrible example of an obvious sell-out to foreign investors, who demand lots of exploitative tits and ass for their investment money to get it done. Surprisingly, I was more than impressed by Shannon Tweed as a quality actor. She has the "chops" to rise above this very limiting, stigmatized genre. She's quite good. Engaging, intelligent, and alluring. Worth much more than the object of lust she is presented as. I wonder why she hasn't broken out by now. This is a lame, predictable film with all the expected shower and makeout scenes intact. If you like that alone, it's for you! Otherwise, don't waste your time.
Felicity (1998)
Greg Grunberg as "Sean" is the best!!
As far as THE reason to watch a sit-com, Mr. Grunberg gives new meaning to MUST. He's probably the most uniquely humourous actor I've seen on TV in quite some time. The producers are very wise to have made him a regular cast member. Refreshingly honest acting, realistically funny, and worth watching all the MORE!! I'm hooked on "Felicity."
Un tè con Mussolini (1999)
Jaded, violent action-seeking viewers look elsewhere!
This is a wonderfully fluid, lovely, touching portrait of several beautiful souls interacting, and their relationships and experiences prior to and during the second world war in one of the most artistically stimulating backgrounds on the planet. This film is wonderfully well constructed, with deep emotional relationships portrayed in depth by many wonderful actors. Dame Judy, Joan Plowright, Cher, Lily Tomlin, Dame Judy Dench headline a formidable cast! Those looking for blood bursts, explosions, quick and nasty action ... go to Schwarzenegger!
This is refreshingly lovely film! If you enjoyed "Enchanted April" or "Room with a View" then this is for you ...
Resident Alien (1990)
Highly recommended for those who love wisdom!!
Quentin Crisp is a unique Godsend. His acidic wit and unique originality are foremost in this piece. The cinematic construction of this piece is brilliant! It is ever-flowing, constantly entertaining, and wonderfully colorful, with respect to the characters he shares his life with! The naturally occurring characters are major players throughout. Take a trip through the 70's and enjoy the rare, bent wisdom of the first "Queen" to emigrate to the States. Quentin Crisp is a rare, brilliant, marvellous human being! It is a pleasure to follow his daily travails and know him, somewhat internally, as we watch him move throughout NYC. Highly recommended to those who are Gay, as well as to those who adore wise, old folks who see the world in a wonderfully different way!
Queer as Folk (1999)
I loved being privy to the original broadcast in the UK!!
This is an uncommonly honest, realistic, and passionate portrayal of gay relationships ... not particular to the UK at all. Originally shown on British BBC television as an original mini-series, unlike any which one would see in the USA, it is sexually graphic at times, honest in its characterisations, and very well acted and constructed. The queer folks, whose lives we follow, I genuinely cared for on many levels, and felt the emotion of their circumstances. I saw the programme during my visit to England in March 1999. Largely, it was well received by the viewing public in the UK. I could imaging what the bible belters would do if it were on American TV!! Yes, it's realistic and quite well worth seeing.
