Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (1986)
Never seen anything like this...
When I rented this movie I didn`t really know what it is about. So I watched it and I have to say that it was very interesting. I have never seen a movie like this before. The plot is quite strange but, hey, what do you expect when watching a "portrait of a serial killer"! Sometimes it looked a little bit like a documentary but, I think, that created the atmosphere of the movie. You`re right in the middle, you observe (almost) every killing but, nevertheless, I felt some kind of sympathy for Henry. He`s sick and he has to kill somebody (he`s kinda addicted to it) but then it was interesting to see how he developed feelings for the girl (for the first time in his life?).... Well, I could write on and on because it is a kind of film you don`t get to see that often. I love the directing in this one. The camera and the actors told everything. There was no need for excessive tilts and pans and cuts. Just simple and smooth. Good, interesting, disturbing, unusual and tough stuff which is worth watching.
Hard Rain (1998)
What was this for?
Well, this movie is crap! After just ten minutes I knew this one is not going to be better. What a waste of a great actor named Morgan Freeman. All the characters are so flat and everything looks so constructed just to reach the feature length mark. I really can`t recommend this one. I wanted to flush it down the toilet but then I realized that it doesn`t belong to me. Sorry, 1/10...
Sphere (1998)
A quite good one
There are quite some similarities with Cameron`s "The Abyss" but they work on a different level. Where Abyss is spectacular, Sphere is psychological. I have to say I really enjoyed Sphere. Sure, the characters were a bit flat (Hoffman) but S.L. Jackson was just brilliant. There is a lot of tension in this movie and its atmosphere is frightening. I think the end is just brilliant with Hoffman saying that mankind is not just ready for this thing and that we are too primitive. A quite good one.....7/10
