The List (I) (2007)
2/10
Bad movie
30 May 2008
Warning: Spoilers
From the fonts at the start, to the insane unexplained plot jumps, to the crow barred in Christian mumbo jumbo - this film reeks of many levels of death. DO NOT BE FOOLED BY THE RATING. I don't know how this film has received the rating it has, the acting is terrible, people appear in it at random and with very little understanding offered to the viewer to why they are there (the mysterious church ghost was probably the most insane). It really is a terrible film. I don't know what's wrong with Malcolm Macdowell these days, he used to make good stuff.

Joey's mum from Dawson's Creek is in it, her acting has actually gotten worse. She's one of the big-hitter's in the film.

If you have recently been saved by Jesus then this probably the film for you but in all likelihood it's going to make you pick up the bottle or needle again just to recover from that level of monotony - and I don't think he would blame you either.

To quote from the film "both God's friends and enemies underestimate the power of prayer" - well I pray that another movie like this doesn't waste my time again.

Amen

Cold Fever (1995)
10/10
A great film to watch with a bottle of your favourite wine.

A friend of mine gave me this video about a year ago. It never took me long to get round to watching it as he told me what a great film it was. The night in question me and my then girlfriend sat in front of the television and nothing was said until an hour and half later. Engrossing, exhausting and enlightening are all words which I would assiocate with this film. It is a great journey of a film starting in Japan and working its way to the empty expance of Iceland the pace is subdued though relentless. It is cultural and mystical, saddening and humorous. It is also one of the best films I've ever seen. It reminds me of a mixture of directors from its style, Jim Jarmusch, David Lynch and Gus Van Sant have all created films in which the same kind of atmosphere can be felt of crowded iscolation. p.s. watch for the gnome in the backround as he walks from the car to the farm.

Arizona Dream (1993)
Great Cinema!
5 January 1999
After watching Jim Jarmusch's Dead Man and Fredrick Thor Fredrickson's Cold Fever I knew that there was going to be a great pairing of acting abilities. This, of course, being that of Johnny Depp and Lili Taylor I was not disappointed. The film, at first, absorbs the viewer into a translucent though engaging tale of exploration into the mind and soul. This makes the viewer belive momentarily that the film that they are watching is going to be fanciful and mystic. Hence there at first is no bond between the characters and the Viewer. However, reality becomes less and less of a point or actuality in the film as it paces through the lives of the characters centering on Johnny Depp's charecter. An ifinitity is subconsiously drawn with him as we watch. Faye Dunnaway, who, at first, seemed utterly mis-cast is brilliant, her potrayal of the pre-menopausal cradle-snatcher is brilliant. Jerry Lewis also makes the film great as gritty realism exists in wealth. It feels like there is a piece of everyone in it, there is depression, love, life and death and the exploration of time. Although the film seems like a dream on celluloid it also makes the viewer understand and more importantly empathise with the charecters and at the end the sadness is alleviated by the theme of life, that life goes on, almost in circles. To anyone who has not yet been seriously touched by a film, watch this. It might change you're mind. 10/10 p.s. Watch for the balloon scene at the beginning!

Twin Peaks (1990–1991)
Supremely mystic, frightening and brilliant!
5 January 1999
In 1990 when I first saw this series I was in Primary 7 in a Cumbernauld primary school. I'd never seen anything like it and I don't think I'll see anything like it again. Brilliant, the film Fire Walk With Me was even better but the thing with Twin Peaks is you either love or hate it, I can't help but love it.
