Tunnel Rats (2008)
Awful bad movie
This has got to be one of the worst movies ever made. I'm not being prejudiced against the director. this movie just plain sucks. I know some of you like it because it has a lot of blood and gore and mangled bodies and lots of stuff gets blown up. If that's your cup of tea, go for it. But in this movie, this is what is missing: any kind of acting, any possible directing, anything resembling realistic jungle battle, intelligent dialog, story line and plot without holes galore, intelligent soldiers, and I could go on and on. This is not how war is. This is not how it was in Vietnam. This does not show any side of humanity. It's a jumbled up mess. A complete waste of time and money. Do not see this film. Time for the director to retire.
Gifting It: A Burning Embrace of Gift Economy (2002)
Extremely accurate portrayal of Burning Man
Gifting It is probably the most accurate portrayal of Burning Man I've ever seen on film. Burning Man is tough to put a finger on. I think its something like a cross between a Rorschach inkblot test and a mirror. That is, everyone interprets it differently, and what you think of it and get out of it is more a reflection of you. Having said that, this movie gives the viewer an excellent base to understand what happens out there in the desert. It looks like most of the footage was shot in 2002, yet the basic philosophies and ideals apply to any year. If you have any desire to see a glimpse of what happens there, I highly recommend this film. If you're already a fan of the event, you'll absolutely love this.
Sons of Provo (2004)
good for about 5 minutes - negative review
I attended the premier last night. The movie started out with a bang (perhaps due to pre-premier excitement). The audience laughed for about 15 minutes, then most of us spent the rest of the time fighting off sleep. This movie can not be compared to _Spinal Tap_ or any of Guest's work, unless you want to say _Sons of Provo_ is a wanna-be gone awfully wrong. It just fell flat, it died, it was painful. The story went nowhere, the jokes were bland, even if you were a Mormon and could get all of the inside jokes, it felt like a waste of time. There were two redeeming qualities: Kirby's acting was spot on! And the songs were very clever (for an LDS audience only). So, my recommendations... Avoid the movie. And if you are Mormon, buy the music CD.
