Chill Factor (1999)
"Broken Arrow, Part II"
Chill Factor is a great "crowd pleasing" movie, lots of things blow up, there's blood, people die, and you really don't have to think at all while watching the movie. Although several parts are unbelievable, the audience seemed to love it from beginning to end.
The plot of the is a tad bit over used. Anyone who saw "Broken Arrow" may have trouble telling the difference these movie, except for the fact that this doesn't have as big stars. As predictable as this is, if this is your idea of $8 well spent, then it's a "must-see" movie.
If it's not, it's easily summed up with a quote from the movie "Bowfinger": "I'm trying to make a movie, not a film."
Bedhead (1991)
Amazing
I was just reading the other review of this film and i had to comment on it.
"Bedhead" is a FRESHMAN film school project of Rodriguez. He did the whole thing for $800, which as a film student is one of the most amazing things I've ever seen. (It's also his brother and sister, not children in it, but it's not really important.)
I highly recommend that anyone interested in making films should read his book, "Rebel without a Crew" and if you get a chance to see this film, don't pass it up.
Pushing Tin (1999)
Well done, very entertaining
Pushing Tin was a very entertaining piece, and kept my attention through out the whole thing, which is sometimes hard to do in a 2 hour film. At a few points in the film, it seemed like it lacked a solid focus, but it all makes sense in the end (without ruining it for anyone who hasn't seen it)
The film was also very accurate on actual flight traffic controller speech, (for all of you who fly the friendly skies), so i congratulate the film makers for not slacking off on that one. (Ironically, in the screen play I'm working on now I have a conversation between a Controller and a Pilot (but i guess they beat me to getting it on the screen))
The story was well written and very original which many of today's productions lack. All in all, they did a great job. I would recommend this film.
The Matrix (1999)
An original story for a not so original film
Matrix was a very entertaining idea for a story, unfortunately it turned into a typical "bust-'em-up" action film. Without the long battle sequences, Matrix could have been a very provocative cinema experience. The story was well through out, except for a few errors, resulting in some sections of the film being unrealistic and unbelievable.
The idea of the Matrix was one that got me thinking through out the film, as well as several hours after the film of the possibility of it's existence. In today's film industry, many films are just distorted versions of other films. The story of the Matrix does not follow suit. On the other hand, this is only true for the story. Of course the action sequences are very difficult to be original, but several other visual elements were familiar, because they have be used before.
Many scenes in the film made me comment to myself in a sarcastic tone, "Yeah right."
On the upside, I hope that someday I myself can walk though the metal detector with many fully automatic weapons strapped to me, if not only to see the expression on the officer's face.
