Tru Calling (2003)
Heed the Calling
If you're expecting "Buffy," run now. "Tru Calling" has drama and action, but on a more human level. Eliza Dushku, who plays Tru Davies, is a young woman who sets out to save lives. Not just those of her on-the-edge siblings, but also those of the recently dead!
Mysterious cries for help, a twelve hour rewind on the world, and Tru must fix things before it's too late. Again. As she races to solve the mysteries surrounding the lives of endangered strangers, she must also try to keep her family and friends from making terrible mistakes. Every moment is another chance to help or hurt, and Tru knows it.
"Tru Calling" is a rare find among TV shows. It stresses the power of the individual to affect change, the bond of familial love, and a sense of loyalty to strangers in need. Ms. Dushku is an amazing actress, beautiful, and definitely one to watch.
Give "Tru Calling" a chance to sweep you up in its web of mystery and hope. You'll be glad you did.
John Doe (2002)
Real and surreal; an enjoyable show!
"John Doe" is a fascinating show with characters that are surprisingly real for such a surreal work.
Begin with John himself, a man with total personal amnesia yet he knows virtually everything else! If you suddenly understood complex mathematics and statistical probability, wouldn't you use that knowledge to get rich? John does. Newly rich, Doe also acquires an identity so that he can have a life while he tries to find his old one.
Encountering a missing child's image, he begins a quest to help police find her, initially believing that she must be connected to him, for he sees her in color despite being color blind.
Who is John Doe? He's a real guy, wanting a nice place but quick to help other's when he can.
Surrounding Doe are a cast of characters, including Lt. Jamie Avery, a tough policewoman who questions Doe's helpfulness; Hayes, a police officer who sees Doe as a valuable ally and possibly a friend; Digger, a bar owner with a philosophical nature hidden by a gruff exterior; and Karen, a vibrant eighteen-year-old art student who might prove John's best chance of regaining his lost memory
If you enjoyed the surrealistic "Twin Peaks", or were a fan of the less dour episodes of "The X-Files", give "John Doe" a chance. You might find yourself liking the man, even if you don't know who he really is.
A Nightmare on Elm Street: The Dream Child (1989)
Stop Insulting it!
As the summery said, please stop insulting this movie! It wasn't bad like Nightmare 6 (Please shoot the writer of that one!) Now I will admit, this was not the best of the series. I liked the first and the seventh for the best. Nor was it close to the worst which was number six.
The plot of Nightmare 5 was in my opinion very good. The idea that Freddy, beaten down by Alice in Nightmare 4, can come back by being reborn through his mother and then use Alice's unborn baby's dreams to strike out at people is really an interesting concept. However, like many of the Nightmare films, this one is badly hurt by poor lines, bad directing, and some mistakes in the ending. But there are some wonderful things about this one. For one thing, it trys to return to the darkness of the first film and it attempts to further explore the only person who has managed to survive Krueger. The film gives a partial happy ending to Alice. Its not the best Nightmare. But it was not a bad movie.
In the end, I don't think anyone today is really going to accept a thought provoking Freddy or a "really" in depth movie. People want the killer to be what they are used to. I just hope that the people out there who actually want a new Nightmare with a really good script and a SCARY Freddy will get someone inside of New Line to knock some sense into them.
In the Mouth of Madness (1994)
What If Reality Shared His Point Of View?
"This is not reality!" But that's only because realty currently shares your point of view. "In The Mouth Of Madness" is one of the most terrifying movies that I have ever seen. It draws you in, seemingly talking about nothing more than a simple insurance scan but soon it transforms into a vicious story about a horror writer who's story's have become real. As John Trent, an insurance investigator and Julia Stiles, an editor of Sutter Caine's novels, venture into the world to try and find the lost author, they discover the horrible truth. "In The Mouth Of Madness" will make you afraid to open a book or even to look at one! "WE ARE NOT LIVING IN A SUTTER CAINE STORY!" No. Not yet John. But what if...
The Story of Us (1999)
Sweet, Tender, and Real
"The Story of Us" is a wonderfully sweet and heart warming film that has a real heart and a brilliant cast. Bruce Willis is a genius. He portrays the married working man so well and he really shows a lot of deep emotion. Michelle Pfeiffer stuns you with a real knockout performance. She shows you exactly what can happen to someone when the daily strain gets into your hair and won't let go. The young actor and actress playing their children are very good in their supporting roles. Especially the young girl who gives you a sense that she knows more than she claims. All in all, "The Story of Us" is an outstanding film with an amazing cast with a great script. I give it **** out of ****!
The Dark (1993)
Unique!
I rented The Dark just to see Neve Campbell in it. I was expecting something that at the least wouldn't make me want my money back. I got even better! The Dark is a very interesting movie about a scientist turned hunter who is determined to find the deadly animal that saved his life two years ago. But he isn't the only one after the miraculous creature who can either heal or kill. A unique movie in a sea of recreations and old movies being revamped. The story is very interesting and the characters have histories and personalities. When you watch it, at least in my case, you end up wishing for more not from disatisfaction but for more goodness. Plus, Neve Campbell looks great as a policewoman!
Virus (1999)
Dark Sci-Fi Horror
Virus is a dark and surprisingly impressive Sci-Fi Horror. The characters unfortunatly were not well developed and information about the creature itself is limited but its intentions are very clear. Exterminate humanity. The cyborg creations of the main computer are hideous and deadly monsters. From the small insect like machines to the huge metal attackers. Some people would equate them to classic Star Trek Borg but they are far worse. The main electric creature isn't assimilating people but using them for spare parts! The darkness and almost gothic quality of this movie is appealing in a vicious way. But like all movies, you need to possess the ability to ignore reality and let yourself be drawn into the film's enviroment. Sinister is the best description for this movie and its lead monster. But I do wish that the film makers that they had put more background into the characters.
The General's Daughter (1999)
A Thinking Movie
Many so-called thriller/mystery movies leave the veiwer with a bad taste in the mouth because their plots are so vauge and leave so many holes that you have to make up half the story yourself. The General's Daughter not only provides you with an intricate and often twisted plot that keeps you guessing as to who is the bad guy and who's just trying to do the right thing but it also gives you an extremely detailed and very personal story of pain, justice, and how loyalty can be taken to a terrible extreme. The performances are excellent, particularly James Woods, John Travolta, and Madeline Stowe's, and well worth your time and money.
Urban Legend (1998)
Unique Horror Film!
Urban Legend was an excellent horror movie. The sequence of events, the multiple characters with motives, and the twist ending all made Urban Legend a unique movie to see. The action was fast and the characters were in a way people we all know. One boy was a practical joker and another a writer for the school paper. One girl was working for a school radio program and another was an athlete on the swim team. The people were diverse and well defined. Also the movie's ability to shock you was amazing! Just when the veiwer thinks one thing is going to happen something you didn't quite expect occurs instead.
The actors and actresses in the film were mostly new comers with the major exception of horror movie veteran Robert Englund. It is refreshing to see so many new faces in the movie industry. Especialy ones who can act so well. The fear and the insanity of the film are very much alive in the actors portrayal of the characters. Especially in Rebecca Gayheart's performance. I personally liked Urban Legend better than Scream. I highly recommend Urban Legend to all horror fans. It's expertly written, has a unique plot, and is brought to life by wonderful acting performances. A funny, scary, and thrilling movie.
