Instinct (1999)
A very odd film.
A very odd film. The 'tame' apes looked very much like people dressed up in monkey suites. The whole thing was bizarre. I have read some other inputs on this film which rate it highly - all I can think is that they reached a different plane to the one I'm on. What a silly film!
Without Limits (1998)
A film for fans of Pre, or of running.
Unless you are a fan of running star Prefontaine, or have an abiding interest in the sport of running, or come from Oregon, this film has little appeal. The central character is unpleasantly arrogant without the saving grace of having achieved the greatness he strived for, an Olympic gold medal.
The film does engage your interest in places. The races are very well done, in particular the mixing of slow with normal motion.
Donald Sutherland plays, for once, a seemingly normal person. For a coach he appears to be very distant from the person being coached, to the extent of being a 'non-coach'.
Viewed from the point of view of a dramatic work rather than as a biography, the film is overly long at 114 minutes (on video) and the pacing is uneven. Ultimately, a flawed film about a flawed person, but there are much worse films than this on current release.
A Night at the Roxbury (1998)
Not as good as watching paint dry.
So bad that its embarrassing - even in the house on my own. Don't waste your time or money on renting this turkey! Childish acting; nonsense dialogue; cliche plot, such as it is. If you think stupid is funny this may be for you. It makes Mr Bean look an intellectual giant. Complete rubbish.
What Rats Won't Do (1998)
typical english humour-a polished and well turned out comedy romance
Thoroughly enjoyed this breath of fresh air, after watching a stack of Hollywood-type stuff. Marvellous character parts played by well known British actors. The story line was strong and funny. Pity the leading man wasn't more of a hunk - but still you can't have everything and it did make him more believable in the part. Charles Dance was an absolute hoot. I think he must like playing these parts - did anyone see him in 'Space Truckers'? - an equally entertaining part... I thought that the Court Room scenes were really well done-good old fashioned stuff and entertaining - isn't that what it's all about?
The Real Macaw (1998)
Excellent children's entertainment
I enjoyed this children's film - have a feeling that the new parrot film 'Paulie' has taken the idea from 'The Real Macaw'and rounded it out from a straightforward children's adventure movie to a full on family movie. Both films are excellent, but Paulie can be watched by everyone, whereas the 'Real Macaw' is definitely more of adventure film for the little ones.
Both good family entertainment.
Clay Pigeons (1998)
a great watch
Just viewed this on video and pleasantly surprised. The video case slick did not make the film jump off the shelf. However, I was really taken with it. It grew on me having caught my attention with an excellent mix of picture and music right at the start of the film when a car is pushed over a ravine edge. There were lots of interesting sequences to catch the imagination, coupled with a lovely lot of older music tracks - I especially liked the Elvis Presley track, even though I am not a rabid fan of his. Ridley Scott touches were much in evidence. It was something a bit different and the actors were all very good in their parts, particularly Joaquin Phoenix and Vince Vaughan. Having been impressed with Joaquin Phoenix in another film watched recently - A Return to Paradise - I shall be watching out for him from now on.
There were definitely touches of Hannibal Lector in 'Lester the Molester' one of the main characters.
A thoroughly good watch.....
Bulworth (1998)
extremely unpleasant with a couple of giggles
Pity, as I really wanted to like this film. Haven't seen Warren Beatty in a film for yonks, but was dismayed to see him in this. His storyline was obvious, but unbelievable. Do we really have to put up with this prolonged assault of foul language? Enough is enough - I just cannot be entertained listening to this type of stuff. Please film makers tone down the language. I know the Brothers street language may be a little crude, but not everyone wants to hear it, even in the name of realism.
Mr Beatty -I was ashamed for you............
Kundun (1997)
Documentary version of 'Seven Years in Tibet'
Well photographed and well acted story of the last Dalai Lama. VERY slow going, lacking the drama of Seven Years in Tibet which is essentially the same story. If it had been made as a documentary, the film would rate very high, but for dramatic entertainment it is very hard going.
Clockwatchers (1997)
Why make a film about office work?
This film is about the minutiae of office work as experienced by four female office workers.
It is a film without a single redeeming feature. It was so bad and so boring, that it was fascinating. For all those that believe office work and office life is largely pointless and the ultimate in tedium and boredom, this film will confirm it.
Why was it made, and how did its makers ever raise the funds?
