The Blair Witch Project (1999)
The art of moviemaking
A gripping and frightening film in all ways. Go see it, with the following words in your mind:
In October 1994, three student filmmakers from Burkittsville, Maryland went into the woods to shoot a documentary about an old myth called the Blair Witch. They were never heard from again.
One year later, their footage was found...
South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (1999)
Deep, sophisticated, kick-a** social commentary
To the average viewer who is considering seeing this movie, thanks to either the trailers or any other materials, they will most likely be surprised to hear me say that this is perhaps one of the most stinging, scathing, and brilliant comedies of the last decade. You can go in half-drunk and laugh your head off, but you can also go in sober, and sort of realize the dozens of mirror images in this cartoon, or the several references to the general ideas society has about this movie.
It's sort of difficult to explain, but go see it anyway, and if you are a little squeamish, close your eyes at all the icky parts.
The Prince of Egypt (1998)
A Visual Masterpiece
For years, I have searched for a truly epic film. I have witnessed the genius of Lawrence of Arabia, the majesty of Star Wars, the pupil-dilating battles of Braveheart, but after all that war, I realize that The Prince of Egypt is a little more special than all of them.
If not the best film of the year, then the best animated film ever. Its visuals simply can't be described, for its images will stay in your mind forever. They will not be seared, like the brutal images of Saving Private Ryan, but instead, simply stay with you. When you remember them, you will smile, for they are the true meaning of epic.
If you don't like the film's story, or even if you don't like the film in general, you will still stare in awe at its visual images. They are the best ever. The parting of the Red Sea is just one of the best. The closing shot is about 10 seconds long and is truly mind-boggling.
Animation just hit puberty, and I can't wait to see it become an adult. Go see it. You won't be disappointed, I guarantee you.
Star Trek: Insurrection (1998)
Good, but when will they make a REAL Star Trek film?
I thought this one was good, almost as First Contact. The action was great, however lack of a good space battle degrades the experience. Overall, everybody got a good amount of screen time except Beverly. Funny too.
But when are they going to make a really great Romulan war story? I've got a great simple idea. A renegade Romulan subcommander leads a fleet of warbirds and an experimental battle cruiser in an attempt to destroy Earth. The Enterprise discovers, however, that they aren't so renegade and that they are actually a ploy by the Empire to strike the Federation while maintaining the alliance against the Dominion. Now, was that so hard?
All of the TNG films have been OK or just good. When are they gonna make a big budget epic film? I guess we have to wait for The Phantom Menace.
