The Black Cauldron (1985)
BLAH! And YUCK!
OY! Is this a stinker of a movie! I'm telling ya...I don't know how I missed this movie in 1985 but I'm kind of glad I did! I had heard really great things about it and was really looking forward to watching it. Well I rented it... BLAH! It was a major disappointment! First I guess the Horn King looks scary but then Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty was more so. And I'm sorry but I felt no chemistry between the pig boy and the Princess. I have to say this is on of the few Disney movies where I think they totally missed their mark.
The Mask of Zorro (1998)
A must see!
OK this is a great movie! The banter between Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta Jones is great not to mention the on screen chemistry the two them share. Antonia and Anthony Hopkins also are wonderful together. This movie was like an old fashioned hero movie from the 30's the good guys are VERY good and the bad guys are VERY bad! The plot moved along at a good clip. The sword fighting was done very well. The only thing that I could see that was bad (and that is because it reaches out and slaps you in the face) was Matthew Letscher's REALLY bad wig... All in all I would say this is a must see movie!
The Truman Show (1998)
A great movie
I went to this movie wanting Jim Cary to impress me... and let me tell you... he did (in spades). I only hope that this is not a one time departure. Jim Carey did a phenomenal job... of course having a fantastic director like Peter Weir does not hurt! Weir does a wonderful job of using his actors in ways that surprises you. Holland Taylor does a great job as a woman who "loves" her son even though she is just acting...Laura Linney is incredible was the long suffering actress that must play Truman's wife... and Noah Emmerich does a wonderful job as Truman's best friend when in reality he is Truman's worst enemy. This movie is truly disturbing because in this media driven world that we live in it is not that big a stretch of the imagination that the networks would try something like this... or that we would all watch it whether we admitted it or not... I recommend this movie highly. If you are looking for a Jim Caery style comedy this movie is not for you.... if you want to see Jim Carey in one of his finest role you MUST see this movie
Anastasia (1997)
See it! Buy it!
OK... I know what everyone says... this is NOT Disney... Well guess what I love Disney and I LOVE this movie. I hope that Fox can improve themselves so they can give Disney a run for their money...The more quality animation out there the better..Yes it is historically COMPLETELY INACCURATE, so what ! It is a fairy tail... It is a wonderful story... if you want to watch where they got the idea for this movie rent Anastasia (1956) with Ingrid Bergman and Yul Brynner. This movie is as good! The animation is beautiful ! The scene when Ana is dancing in the ballroom is even more breath taking than the ballroom scene in Beauty and the Beast. The train wreak is as good as any live action I have seen. Now there are some flaws with this movie... Pooka is just too cute for words... I REALLY hated this little dog! And Bartok while quite funny was also not necessary... BUT I still LOVE this movie and recommend it highly!
